The Foundation Behind Plug and Play’s Tirana Demo Day
AADF rebuilt Tirana’s Pyramid and underwrites Plug and Play’s second demo day there on October 7 and 8, after six Batch 1 checks.
On October 7 and 8, 22 startups will pitch inside the Pyramid of Tirana at Plug and Play Tirana Expo 2026. The two-day close of the second accelerator batch puts founders in front of Microsoft, Daimler Truck, IFC and a run of European funds. The hall they walk into exists because the Albanian-American Development Foundation rebuilt a 1988 dictator’s museum and then paid to plant a Silicon Valley accelerator in it.
The Pyramid Was Built for Enver Hoxha
The concrete cone on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit opened in 1988 as a museum to Enver Hoxha, the ruler who kept Albania sealed from the world. After years as a NATO base, a nightclub and a ruin kids climbed and slid down, Dutch studio MVRDV rebuilt it and the city reopened the site on October 16, 2023, with coloured box rooms stacked on, in and around the old shell.
AADF is the client behind that second life. The foundation’s TUMO Tirana project page says it committed $8 million to the Pyramid, about 11,800 square meters of classrooms, studios and public space for people aged 12 to 18. TUMO teaches programming, robotics, animation and related crafts for free. AADF also backs 42 Tirana, a tuition-free coding campus in the same complex, and the Innovation Hub coworking floors that opened in 2025, designed by Loft Architects with AADF as client.
That pipeline is the reason a global accelerator has a local address. AADF lists $153 million committed across 86 projects. In October 2024 it brought in Plug and Play, which says it runs over 60 locations, with the Municipality of Tirana, the Pyramid operator and IDEMIA Smart Identity (now under IN Groupe) as partners. Michael D. Granoff, chairman of AADF’s board of trustees, tied the deal to talent that still has to leave to raise money.
By partnering with Plug and Play, we are ensuring that Albanian startups not only gain access to local resources but also a global network that will help them scale and thrive in the international market.
Michael D. Granoff, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Albanian-American Development Foundation
At the 2025 Expo he called the program “a concrete step toward integrating Albania into the global network of entrepreneurship and technology.” Martin Mata, whom the board named sole chief executive on August 3, 2026, told the Batch 2 launch that accelerator cycles are how the country is supposed to produce companies that can compete outside the region.
THE ROAD TO THE 2026 EXPO
- 1988: The Pyramid opens as the Enver Hoxha Museum.
- October 16, 2023: The rebuilt Pyramid reopens as a public tech and education hall.
- October 2024: Plug and Play launches the Tirana accelerator with AADF and city partners.
- October 16-17, 2025: The first Expo puts 22 Batch 1 firms on stage; 10 go on to Silicon Valley.
- February 3, 2026: Batch 2 launches with 25 selected companies on an eight-month calendar.
- May 11, 2026: Plug and Play announces direct investments in six Batch 1 companies.
- October 7-8, 2026: Batch 2 pitches at the Pyramid, 10 AM to 8 PM both days.
Last October the same building already pulled in founders and operators from Kosovo and the rest of the region, so the 2026 guest list is a return visit rather than a first look. Public posts around the promo are still launch copy. The harder question is who pays after the photographs.
Plug and Play Already Wrote the First Checks
On May 11, from Sunnyvale, Plug and Play announced its first direct investments in six startups from Batch 1: Synaps, Insect Intel, Bliss, Infinitcode.ai, NEKOD and kidsday. The founders had finished a six-week Global Overseas Acceleration and Learning stay at headquarters. Seena Amidi, managing partner for EMEA, called the cheques “the beginning of a long-term commitment to the region.” Uranik Begu, director for Central and Eastern Europe, said the moment marked a shift for Albanian companies. Sokol Ymeri, program director at AADF, said the money moved the work “from supporting potential to creating real opportunities for growth and expansion into new markets.”
The only disclosed round size in that group is Synaps. Dealroom records a $3.6 million pre-seed led by Plug and Play, with Fil Rouge Capital of Zagreb in the round. Synaps is an Austrian-Albanian design tool with Albanian-origin founders, listed in Vienna, that chose Tirana for a November 2025 beta launch. Coverage of the raise puts the product at 60,000 users, 1,500 people active each day and hundreds of paying customers, still in beta. In May, founder Brendon Ahmeti was still citing the earlier tally from that launch.
Through the Plug and Play program and investment, we validated and launched our beta, secured global investors, and grew our team fourfold. Since November, we’ve reached over 50,000 users.

Endri Dhaskali of Insect Intel, which had already won a €50,000 ACT NOW 2025 prize, said the Plug and Play cheque was confirmation that Albanian technology can compete abroad, and that time near the Sunnyvale headquarters changed how the team thinks about product and market. Plug and Play’s Tirana page still advertises “750K+” in investments over three years, a program figure that sits beside the much larger Synaps round rather than replacing it. Check sizes for the other five Batch 1 firms have not been published.
BATCH 1 VERSUS BATCH 2
| Item | First batch | Second batch |
|---|---|---|
| Demo days | October 16-17, 2025 | October 7-8, 2026 |
| On the Expo bill | 22 startups | 22 startups pitching |
| Named at launch | 22 on the 2025 stage | 25 selected on February 3 |
| Direct Plug and Play investments | 6 companies on May 11, 2026 | None announced yet |
| GOAL in California | Six weeks; 10 companies sent | October 20 to November 30, 2026 |
The eight-month Tirana accelerator is built around eight bootcamps, 40-plus mentors and office space in the centre of the city. Pitch training for Batch 2 runs September 21 to 25, the last classroom week before the Pyramid stage. Original program copy said the top 10 from each batch would go to GOAL; Batch 1 did send 10, and six of that wider group later took investment.
Who Is Flying Into Tirana?
The Expo’s own notice bills 30-plus international speakers, two stages and a workshop room running in parallel, plus an Expo hall and an investor lounge. Plug and Play’s September 15 post put Google, Microsoft and IFC on the same line. The Tech.eu preview, and the speaker grid on tiranaexpo.com, fill in the rest of the room.

NAMES ON THE BILL
- Corporate and Big Tech: Fatos Ismaili, chief AI architect at Microsoft; Raymond Chow, senior manager for business innovation at Daimler Truck; Sheila Gemin, partner for digital services at KPMG; Matthias Timm of IFC; Intesa Sanpaolo and Ivoclar among the wider corporate group.
- Funds: Max Gurvits, managing partner at Vitosha Venture Partners; Ekaterina Gianelli, venture partner at Calm/Storm Ventures; Julien Coustaury, managing partner at Fil Rouge Capital, already in the Synaps round; Alexandra Lazar of Elevator Ventures; Aditya Kathpalia, managing director at Orbit Startups; Rodrigo Ferreira, investment director at Vinthera; Earlybird on the scale-up panel.
- Plug and Play and product: Jackie Hernandez, senior vice president of global partnerships; Jeff Burton, co-founder of Electronic Arts; Dr. Philipp Gneiting, partner; Clemente Francavilla and Carolin Wais from the investment side; Mikael Kretz, founder of QGroup.
One scheduled session, “From Acceleration to Scale: What CEE and European VCs Actually Look For,” puts Storm Ventures, Vitosha Venture Partners, Elevator Ventures and Earlybird on the same stage. That is the honest geography of the money in the room. Plug and Play is a Sunnyvale platform, Jeff Burton is a California name, and Calm/Storm has a Bay Area line, but the people who write cheques for this part of Europe are mostly CEE and wider-European funds plus IFC. Guests are listed from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia and Türkiye.
Twenty-Two Batch 2 Startups Take the Stage
Eventbrite, run by Plug and Play Albania, lists 22 Batch 2 startups pitching at the Innovation Hub inside the Pyramid. Organisers had named 25 companies when the cohort opened on February 3. Begu said then that the second group was larger and more mixed, with more founders from the region and the diaspora, after a hard cut from a large application pile.
The five official tracks match the firms on the public bill. HealthTech and wellness includes Holos Health, which builds image-based hubs that connect patients to specialists, plus SmartDose and Medical wallet. Construction, design and logistics includes Sorsend, which turns construction emails into tasks, and Drospect, which runs computer vision on drone shots of solar farms. Marketplaces, e-commerce and mobility includes Rent From Locals, billed as a national car-rental marketplace. DeepTech, GovTech and public safety includes VX NORTH, which fuses satellite imagery and open-source intelligence for verification, and Skaitech, which builds drones for defence and emergency work. AI-powered B2B software includes Sainni AI on sales tools and Tendr on tender scoring.
THE FIVE PITCH TRACKS
- HealthTech and wellness: Holos Health, SmartDose, Medical wallet and related care products.
- Construction, design and logistics: Sorsend, Drospect, Archtaste and LekoTech.
- Marketplaces, e-commerce and mobility: Rent From Locals, Beachmaster, Levita and Tribu World.
- DeepTech, GovTech and public safety: VX NORTH, Skaitech, plus cybersecurity and climate names such as Greecon.
- AI-powered B2B software: Sainni AI, Tendr, Katalogim, Ecentic, Onemor, teracrowd, Atelia, Vrtex.
The Expo opens with remarks from Plug and Play and AADF, then moves through cohort pitches, startup-corporate panels and investor sessions, and ends with recognition and networking, including time off-stage in the city. Jackie Hernandez is listed among the Plug and Play hosts who are supposed to turn those hallway meetings into introductions across the wider network.
European Funds Fill the Investor Lounge
Fil Rouge’s presence is the cleanest example of how this circuit actually works. The Zagreb fund is already on the Synaps cap table and Coustaury is on the 2026 speaker list, so the Expo is, for at least one firm, a second look at a market it has already paid to enter. Vitosha is a Sofia-based Balkans fund. Elevator Ventures sits with Raiffeisen in Austria. Orbit runs emerging-market batches. Earlybird is a European house being asked what it wants to see after acceleration. IFC is development finance with a corporate seat at the table.
Daimler Truck, Microsoft, Intesa Sanpaolo, KPMG and Ivoclar are there for a different job. The preview describes founder-corporate sessions on health collaboration, on how AI tools get bought by large companies, and on how marketplace and mobility firms grow across the Balkans. For a city of this size, a procurement pilot or a venture-client contract can matter more than another small seed cheque, because it is revenue that does not require a founder to move the company to Vienna, Berlin or California to be taken seriously.
That is the tension Synaps already embodies. The most fully described success from Batch 1 is a product launched in Tirana, staffed by Albanian-origin founders and incorporated where European investors are used to signing paper. The Pyramid can host the demo. It cannot, by itself, decide where the next holding company sits.
Albania’s Combined Company Value Is $62.5 Million
Dealroom’s public Albania profile puts the country’s combined enterprise value of $62.5 million, with no unicorns and a population of 2.7 million. That is the scale of the market the Expo is trying to reprice in two days. A single $3.6 million pre-seed is large relative to that total. It is still a pre-seed.
THE MONEY AROUND THE ROOM
- AADF committed capital: $153 million across 86 projects, including $8 million on the Pyramid and TUMO.
- Albania company value: $62.5 million combined on Dealroom, with zero $1 billion outcomes on the record.
- State Grant 26: 300 million lek, billed as €3 million, after 81 projects were funded in 2025 from 420 applications.
- Expo 2026: 22 pitches, 30-plus speakers, six Batch 1 companies already backed.
The state grant window still treats early companies as a public program, with small tickets split across green and digital work. Private capital in this market has been thin enough that a Sunnyvale accelerator writing six cheques becomes national news. Mira Murati’s Machine Thinking Lab drew an €8.8 million Albanian government line in 2025, and diaspora cheques such as Kevin Sekniqi’s K4S6 stake in mobility firm Patoko show another path that does not run through demo day. None of that yet looks like a deep local fund bench.
The California Stretch Starts on October 20
GOAL for this cycle is on the calendar from October 20 to November 30, a 41-day window that matches the six-week stay Batch 1 actually completed, not the 10-week version in the 2024 launch copy. The original design still talks about 10 companies per batch. Who from Batch 2 gets on that flight has not been posted. Plug and Play said in May it was still looking at more Albanian investments while Batch 2 ran.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The dates: October 7-8, 2026, 10 AM to 8 PM, Pyramid of Tirana, Innovation Hub.
- The bill: 22 named Batch 2 firms, 30-plus speakers, five industry tracks.
- The cash already in: six Batch 1 companies backed on May 11, including the $3.6 million Synaps pre-seed.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Check sizes: five of the six May investments have no published figures.
- GOAL seats: the 10-company slot for Batch 2 is still a program rule, not a named list.
- Corporate follow-through: no public pilots from Daimler Truck, Microsoft, IFC or Intesa Sanpaolo tied to this cycle.
Registration runs through Eventbrite and tiranaexpo.com. The next facts that will tell whether the Pyramid is a fundraising hall or a very expensive classroom land after the applause, on the October 20 flight list and on any term sheets that follow it.
