Onimusha Way of the Sword Preload Hits a Windows 11 Wall

Onimusha: Way of the Sword opens preload today at 41 GB on PS5, with Windows 11, an SSD, and a fatter Xbox install in the fine print.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword opens preload today at 41.235 GB on PS5, two days before its September 4 launch. The Standard Edition sells for $69.99. Capcom still lists Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD on PC, and Xbox store pages put the install at about 53.31 GB.

That PS5 number is the one people are cheering. It is also the least of the hardware asks on this comeback.

Preload Starts Today, Two Days Before Launch

PlayStation store listings put the PS5 build at 41.235 GB, version 01.000.001, with a midnight unlock. Preload is dated September 2. The game itself is dated Friday, September 4, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

THE LAUNCH WINDOW

  • Preload: September 2, 2026, on the Standard Edition at $69.99.
  • Unlock: September 4, 2026, listed at midnight, with no paid early access on any edition.
  • Deluxe: $79.99, same Friday start as Standard.
  • Premium Deluxe: $89.99, still the same Friday start.

Deluxe and Premium Deluxe add charm and outfit kits, extra sword skins, and, at the top tier, ally outfits plus an in-game mini soundtrack. They do not move the clock. Capcom turned the old digital pre-order extras into an Early Adopter Bonus that stays claimable through September 25 at 4:59 p.m. PDT, which is how the studio patched the date change.

A free demo of about 30 minutes is already up, built around Kiyomizu-dera Temple and a fight with Sasaki Ganryu. Keep that save and the full game grants the Kubi Akari charm. The demo save will not carry into the campaign.

Xbox Asks for 12 GB More Than PlayStation 5

The 41.235 GB PS5 figure looks small next to the 80 GB action games a lot of players still budget for. Xbox is not in that same bracket.

INSTALL SIZE BY PLATFORM

Platform Listed size Notes
PlayStation 5 41.235 GB Version 01.000.001, preload today
Xbox Series X/S About 53.31 GB Approximate store size, Play Anywhere
PC 50 GB SSD required, Steam and Epic
Nintendo Switch 2 31.9 GB Nintendo’s Australian listing

Xbox’s listed install is about 12 GB heavier than the PS5 copy, 53.31 GB against 41.235 GB. PC sits in the middle at 50 GB, and that 50 GB has to live on an SSD. Nintendo’s Australian store lists the game file size at 31.9 GB, the leanest of the four.

A cleared 50 GB block on PS5 still is not enough for the Xbox build. Players hopping between a PlayStation disc habit and an Xbox digital library will feel that gap the first time the queue stalls. Older single-player campaigns are filling drives again this month anyway, including a free Witcher 3 remaster this month, so the Onimusha install is landing on machines that are already doing cleanup.

Windows 11 Is the Floor on PC

Capcom’s PC sheet names Windows 11 for minimum and recommended. It does not name Windows 10. Memory is 16 GB at both tiers. Storage is 50 GB, and the notes say an SSD is required, not suggested.

The Xbox store goes further. Its product page still shows a Windows 10 line in the boilerplate, then warns that Windows 11 is required to play. That is the studio telling PC buyers the store template is wrong.

Play Anywhere is the sweetener on that same page. One digital Xbox purchase covers Series X/S and Windows, which sounds generous until the Windows half of the deal is a Windows 11 machine with 16 GB of RAM and a solid-state drive. A 2006 Onimusha buyer who never left Windows 10 is not on the supported list, even if the GPU still has life in it.

Capcom also tells anyone who records or streams to budget extra system memory. The 16 GB floor is for the game, not for the game plus Discord plus a capture stack.

What a GTX 1660 Buys at 1080p

The minimum GPU is a GeForce GTX 1660 with 6 GB or a Radeon RX 5500 XT with 8 GB. The minimum CPU is an Intel Core i5-8400 or an AMD Ryzen 3 3100. DirectX 12 is required. That kit is supposed to hold 30 fps at 1080p on the Low preset.

The important clause is in parentheses. Capcom says that 30 fps figure is reachable using upscaling. The recommended tier, an RTX 2060 Super or an RX 6600 with an i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600, is a 60 fps Medium 1080p target, also using upscaling. Super Resolution is enabled through NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 3.1. The performance estimates were made on DLSS 4.0 and FSR 3.1. Turn the upscaler off and the card has to do more work than the chart implies.

PC TARGETS CAPCOM PUBLISHED

Tier CPU / GPU Target
Minimum i5-8400 or Ryzen 3 3100; GTX 1660 6 GB or RX 5500 XT 8 GB 1080p, Low, 30 fps, with upscaling
Recommended i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600; RTX 2060 Super 8 GB or RX 6600 8 GB 1080p, Medium, 60 fps, with upscaling
High Same CPU as recommended; RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB or RX 6750 XT 12 GB 1440p, High, 60 fps
Ultra i5-12400 or Ryzen 7 5700; RTX 4070 Ti 12 GB or RX 7900 XT 20 GB 4K, Ultra, 60 fps

Every row still wants Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, and 50 GB on an SSD. Capcom says the specs can change without notice, and that the frame rate may drop under heavy load. On PS5 and Xbox Series X the studio’s own modes target 60 fps with upscaling in Performance and a 30 to 40 fps band in Quality. PlayStation’s store flags the build as PS5 Pro Enhanced.

The Switch 2 Copy Still Downloads

Handheld players get the smallest file and the tightest frame-rate cap. They also get a physical edition that does not spare them the download.

SWITCH 2 PERFORMANCE SHEET

  • TV mode: 1920 x 1080 output with upscaling, 30 fps.
  • Handheld: 1600 x 900 with upscaling, 30 fps.
  • Optional toggle: a variable rate between 30 and 40 fps.
  • Physical copies: the Standard Edition ships as a Game-Key Card, so the 31.9 GB still has to land on the console.

Joy-Con 2 motion is in for sword swings and bow aiming, which is the one input trick the other platforms cannot copy. The 30 fps docked cap still sits well below the 60 fps Performance mode on PS5 and Series X. A 31.9 GB download is easy to live with. A Game-Key Card that then asks for that same download is a disc-era franchise teaching an old lesson in a new sleeve.

A 170-Person Team After a 20-Year Gap

This is the first mainline Onimusha since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, a 20-year wait. Capcom has said the series has sold over 8.7 million units. Producer Akihito Kadowaki has been blunt about why the gap lasted. Other floors had the people.

It was very difficult to get a team together to make a new Onimusha game, despite wanting to internally for a long time.

Akihito Kadowaki, Producer, Onimusha: Way of the Sword

He has pointed at Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and other large Capcom projects that soaked up staff as those games got bigger and slower to finish. A core group for Way of the Sword came together around 2020, once RE Engine had the tools the team wanted. The development crew is about 170 people. Director Satoru Nihei is running the sword work. The game is a new story, not a homework assignment from Warlords or Samurai’s Destiny.

HOW THE DATE MOVED

  1. December 13, 2024: Capcom reveals Way of the Sword at The Game Awards with a 2026 window.
  2. June 2, 2026: A playable demo goes live and the studio dates the game for Friday, September 25.
  3. July 2, 2026: Capcom moved the release to September 4, three weeks earlier, after demo feedback.
  4. September 2, 2026: PS5 preload opens at 41.235 GB.
  5. September 4, 2026: Launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.

On the July 2 note Capcom wrote that it wanted the game in players’ hands sooner. The old September 25 date is now the Early Adopter cutoff, not the launch. Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store are the PC storefronts. The official site still lists the Friday date in big type.

No Early Access Before Friday Midnight

PlayStation’s game page says Capcom used Toshiro Mifune as the face model for Miyamoto Musashi, the late actor who played the swordsman on film. Musashi arrives in an Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice, wearing the Oni Gauntlet, absorbing Genma souls, and hunting a reason to keep cutting. Pre-order extras are the Lion Dog charm and the Sealed Curse sword skin, with Deluxe adding more charms, the Red Armor outfit, and the Crimson Lotus gauntlet look.

WHAT UNLOCKS WITH THE BASE GAME

  • Standard at $69.99: the campaign, plus Lion Dog and Sealed Curse if claimed in the bonus window.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere: one digital buy covers console and Windows, on a Windows 11 PC.
  • PS5 Pro Enhanced: flagged on PlayStation’s listing, with DualSense triggers and vibration.

The first reaction to 41.235 GB is that Capcom left some space on the drive. Hold that against the Xbox listing near 53.31 GB, a PC build that will not endorse Windows 10, and a minimum 30 fps claim that already assumes an upscaler, and the modest number is doing a lot of public-relations work. Preload is on the PS5 now. The swords come out Friday at midnight, on whatever free block the store says you still need.
