Tokenized Stocks Reach Ledger Wallets Without Shareholder Rights
Payward and Ledger will store xStocks on hardware wallets, while the tokens remain tracker certificates with no voting rights.
Payward and Ledger said on September 24, 2026 they will let eligible users hold xStocks on Ledger hardware wallets and sign supported trades on the device. Payward, the parent of Kraken, put $42 billion of xStocks transaction volume on that announcement. Each xStock is still a tracker certificate, not a share on a company register.
The headline is cold storage for tokenized stocks. The legal object in the wallet is a bearer debt instrument issued in Jersey, while the listed shares sit with a US broker.
The Deal Splits Into Three Products
Ledger and Payward did not ship a single switch. The join forces on self-custody and liquidity note describes three separate pipes, and they do not all land at the same speed.
THE THREE PIPES IN THE TIE-UP
- Kraken signer: Kraken customers will fund, withdraw, and sign supported transactions with a Ledger device inside the exchange, using Ledger’s Device Management Kit and Clear Signing.
- Wallet payments: Payward Services, the firm’s B2B rails arm, is live as a buy, sell, and swap option inside Ledger Wallet, starting with debit card and bank transfer support in Europe and the UK.
- xStocks in the wallet: Ledger and Payward are putting Payward’s tokenized equities offering more deeply across Ledger Wallet so eligible users can buy, sell, and transact hundreds of tokenized equities from self-custody.
David Ripley, Payward co-CEO, framed the point as a UX problem that security-minded traders already feel.
Self-custody and exchange access shouldn’t feel like separate experiences and ecosystems. The investors who care most about controlling their assets are often the same ones who need deep liquidity, trusted market infrastructure, and secure access to the broader financial system.
David Ripley, Co-CEO of Payward, partnership announcement
Pascal Gauthier, Ledger’s chairman and CEO, said the same rails are meant for retail users and, through Ledger Enterprise, for banks and fintechs that want Payward’s trading, qualified custody, payments, and funding through one link to Kraken. That institutional layer is a collaboration, not a dated launch.
Eligible holders could already withdraw xStocks to a compatible wallet on Solana, Ethereum, TON, or Ink. Thursday’s deal is a branded path: the signer inside Kraken, Payward checkout inside Ledger Wallet, and xStocks surfaced in the same app where people already keep Bitcoin keys.
What an xStock Holder Owns
Payward developed the xStocks framework. The tokens themselves are issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, a Jersey special purpose vehicle registered with the Jersey Financial Services Commission. Product documents say each xStock is classified as a tracker certificate. It is a bearer debt instrument. It gives economic exposure to a named stock or ETF. It does not confer shareholder voting rights.
The token is the certificate, and title is recorded on public blockchains. Holding the token is holding that instrument, not a line on Apple’s or Tesla’s register. Kraken’s help pages state the same limit in plainer words: holders have no legal claim to the underlying company shares or to residual assets if that company is liquidated, and they cannot move an xStock into a traditional brokerage account such as Interactive Brokers.
SHARE, TOKEN, AND DEVICE
| Right or feature | Listed share | xStock token | xStock on a Ledger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price exposure | Yes | Yes, backed 1:1 | Same token, keys on the device |
| Voting at the company | Yes | No | No |
| Name on the share register | Yes | No | No |
| Dividend | Cash to the holder | Reinvested via a multiplier, after 30% US withholding | Same as the token |
| Where the share sits | Broker or company register | Alpaca Securities | Alpaca Securities |
| Who can move it | The broker | Whoever holds the token keys | The Ledger device |
EU and EEA distribution sits under a Liechtenstein FMA-approved prospectus that can be passported across the European Economic Area. Other countries may treat the same token as a crypto asset. That is why the partnership language keeps repeating “eligible” and “supported.”
The Shares Stay With Alpaca Securities
Hardware custody changes who can press send on the token. It does not move the listed shares. Those shares are held by Alpaca Securities LLC, a FINRA-regulated SIPC member, on an asset-by-asset basis with no commingling between names. InCore Bank is named as a secondary custodian. Kraken says Lloyd’s of London adds supplemental cover up to a $175 million aggregate.
Collateral accounts run under a three-party Account Control Agreement among the issuer, the custodian or broker, and an independent Security Agent. If the issuer defaults, that agent may take the accounts, sell the underlying assets, and pay holders under the prospectus. The structure is built so a Kraken or Backed bankruptcy is not supposed to trap the value, with the claim aimed at Alpaca. It is still a claim on a structure, not a direct shareholding.
RESERVE AND AUDIT CADENCE
- Volume cited: Payward and Ledger used $42 billion in total xStocks transaction volume in the September 24, 2026 announcement.
- Proof of reserves: Kraken says reserves are published weekly onchain and checked by third-party auditors.
- Audit cycle: Quarterly ISAE 3000 assurance audits sit on top of those weekly figures.
- Legal file: The issuer’s base prospectus and Final Terms remain the document that defines recovery, not the wallet screen.
A public dashboard at the xStocks DeFi portal shows, name by name, tokens in circulation against shares in custody. Those ratios move. They are a check on backing, not a substitute for reading the prospectus.
Kraken Adds a Hardware Signer
The Kraken piece of the deal is the one that most resembles classic crypto cold storage. Customers will use the same device they already trust for keys to fund and withdraw, and to sign, with Clear Signing meant to show the details on the hardware screen before a thumb press. A user can refuse a transaction on the device. That is the physical approval step the market is selling as stock-market safety.
Ledger put the sequence on its own account the day of the announcement: signer inside Kraken first, Payward Services inside the wallet second, xStocks deeper in Ledger Wallet third.

WHAT WE KNOW
- Payments live: Payward Services said on September 24, 2026 that buy, sell, and swap flows are now live in Ledger Wallet for Europe and the UK.
- xStocks listing: The xStocks account said the tokens are now live on Ledger, with hundreds of US and international names pointed at Ledger Wallet.
- Kraken path: Ledger said Kraken customers will fund, withdraw, and sign with a Ledger signer inside the exchange.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Full wallet feature date: The companies said they are working to integrate xStocks more deeply across Ledger Wallet and did not publish a date when every planned feature will be on.
- Enterprise go-live: Ledger Enterprise access to Payward’s rails is described as work with banks and fintechs, not a finished install.
- Device list: Official text says Ledger devices and Ledger Wallet. It does not name a single model as the only supported unit.
The paper-certificate rhyme is doing a lot of work in the marketing. People once locked engraved shares in a box. A Ledger is a box with buttons. The older paper was a share. The new file is a certificate issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, and the engraved company still does not have your name.
Who Can Use xStocks After the Tie-Up
A Ledger in a US desk drawer does not open this product. xStocks are not accessible in the US, and not to US persons, even when the token tracks a US-listed name. Kraken also shuts out Canada, the UK, and Australia. The same help pages, last updated September 18, 2026, say the tokens are available to eligible non-US clients in 110+ countries.
That UK ban sits next to a different pipe. Payward Services is running crypto buy, sell, and swap inside Ledger Wallet for Europe and the UK. Those card and bank rails are not a back door into xStocks for UK residents.
Kraken’s listed set on that September 18 page is 131 assets: 100 stocks, 27 ETFs, and 4 specialist assets. The partnership text uses “hundreds” for the wider xStocks catalog that Ledger Wallet is meant to reach. Those are two different shelves.
On September 1, 2026, Payward said it would tokenize the top 100 London-listed equities as xStocks, and, subject to approval, explore trading on LSE 24 with the London Stock Exchange. xStocks are not currently available for UK-based investors. For the issuers, the point is another global distribution channel.
HOURS, SIZE, AND FEES ON KRAKEN
- Always-on ten: On Kraken Pro, TSLAx, QQQx, SPYx, NVDAx, CRCLx, AAPLx, HOODx, MSTRx, GLDx, and GOOGLx trade 24/7.
- The rest of the Kraken list: Other xStocks there trade 24/5 and stay dark on weekends, though a withdrawn token can still trade onchain around the clock.
- Ticket size: Kraken allows fractional buys from $1. Direct issue or redeem with the issuer carries a $5,000 minimum and KYC, and most people use secondary markets instead.
- Fees: Kraken charges no trading fee when buying xStocks with USDG or USD. Kraken Pro’s spot book pays a 2 bps maker rebate and charges 10 bps for takers. Converting xStocks carries a fixed 1% trading fee.
HOW THE PRODUCT GOT TO A HARDWARE WALLET
- June 2025: xStocks launch as 1:1 backed tokens meant to move among exchanges, wallets, and onchain apps.
- September 1, 2026: Payward and the London Stock Exchange partner, with the 100 largest London-listed companies slated as xStocks.
- September 18, 2026: Kraken’s xStocks help pages list 131 assets and repeat the US, Canada, UK, and Australia bans.
- September 24, 2026: Payward and Ledger announce the signer, the wallet payments rail, and the deeper xStocks work in Ledger Wallet.
Issuance runs natively on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, Mantle, TON, Ink, and other EVM-compatible networks. During US cash-session hours, xStock prices are anchored to the official exchange print. After hours and on weekends, market makers use other data, including ATS prints, index futures, and internal models, and spreads widen. Kraken says any gap has historically been under 1% by Monday’s open.
Payward Services Goes Inside Ledger Wallet
For Ledger, the commercial prize is not only a new asset type on a signing screen. Payward Services becomes the buy, sell, and swap provider inside Ledger Wallet, so millions of Ledger users can move crypto with Payward while keeping their keys. The first funding methods are debit card and bank transfer in Europe and the UK, with more rails and countries described as later work.
That is a storefront deal. Ledger already had a hardware-wallet audience. Payward gets that audience without forcing every user through a full Kraken onboarding flow for simple conversions. Ledger Enterprise then offers the same family of rails to banks and fintechs that do not want to rebuild an exchange.
The xStocks account treated the wallet listing as live the same day, aimed at those millions of Ledger users and at 24/7 access.

Once a token is off Kraken, it behaves like other onchain units. Kraken says xStocks can be posted as collateral on venues such as Kamino on Solana or Morpho on Ethereum, added to liquidity pools, or lent. Dividend value does not arrive as cash. The issuer reinvests the net dividend, after 30% US withholding, and updates a multiplier at about 8:00 PM EST on the day before the ex-date, so the displayed balance rises. Stock splits use the same rebasing path. On EVM chains the contract adjusts balances. On Solana the raw token count can stay put while a scaled display applies the multiplier.
A Physical Button Still Cannot Vote
A Ledger press confirms a payload. It does not put a holder on a proxy list at a US annual meeting. It does not move a name onto a transfer agent’s file. It does not let someone walk the token into a traditional broker and ask for the share. Traditional listed stock still settles in 1 business day on the cash market. The token can move in seconds. Those are different instruments sharing a ticker-shaped name.
Retail holders may redeem with the issuer if they pass KYC and meet the $5,000 minimum. Most will never do that. They will buy on Kraken or inside a wallet, send the token to a device, and look at a balance that tracks Apple or Tesla or an S&P 500 fund. The button is real. The gap between that button and a shareholder right is also real, and it does not shrink because the keys went offline.
Payward and Ledger built a cleaner path between a hardware wallet and a $42 billion tokenized-stock market. The shares that back the tokens remain in segregated accounts at Alpaca, under a Jersey issuer and a Liechtenstein prospectus, for users outside the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. That is the product that now fits in a pocket.
