Mercedes-AMG Built a V8 CLE and Sold All 30

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung packs a 646 hp rear-drive V8 in 30 cars, all sold before the reveal, while the CLE 53 you can order keeps six cylinders.

Mercedes-AMG sold all 30 examples of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a 646 hp rear-drive V8 coupe, before its September 10, 2026 premiere. The mid-size two-door finally has eight cylinders, a wide carbon body and a track chassis. The catch for anyone who wanted one is simple: the run is closed.

The car you can still configure is the six-cylinder CLE 53. The 646 is a Mythos Series rebuild that started as an engineers’ prototype, not a new rung on the price list.

Affalterbach Rebuilt the CLE 53 From the Ground Up

Dr. Stefan Weckbach, chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said the project did not begin as a normal product brief. A small group in Affalterbach asked how far a CLE could be pushed toward driving dynamics, then built a prototype and treated the whole car as one system. Each finished example is hand-built at AMG headquarters in Affalterbach on a CLE 53 platform, which is why the German badge reads Spezialanfertigung, custom-made, rather than a regular 63.

For me, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents the very essence of AMG. This vehicle came to life because highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car. We turned that dream into reality in the form of maximum driving dynamics and an unparalleled driving experience.

Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Chairman of the Management Board, Mercedes-AMG GmbH

The donor’s AMG Performance 4MATIC+ hardware is gone. Rear seats, sound deadening and several comfort systems come out with it. Mercedes-AMG puts the kerb weight at 1,895 kg on the DIN scale and says the rebuild is around 170 kilograms lighter than the car it started as, even with a V8 in place of the straight-six.

WHAT AMG TOOK OUT OF THE DONOR

  • The driven axle: All-wheel drive is deleted so every newton-metre goes to the rear wheels through a locking differential.
  • The back bench: Rear seats and acoustic insulation are removed and a roll-over bar goes in for stiffness.
  • The assists: Several drive modes, driver aids and the PARKTRONIC parking assistant are dropped so the steering wheel has fewer buttons.
  • The glass and stereo: Rear side windows and the rear screen switch to polycarbonate, and the sound system is simplified to cut mass.

Carbon fibre covers the wide front fenders, bonnet, roof, sills, rear apron and the manual rear wing on two trapezoidal supports. The shell is 60 millimetres wider at both ends, and ride height falls 22 millimetres at the front and 16 millimetres at the rear. Paint is a two-tone magno split: Mojave Silver Magno on the nose, Obsidian Black Magno from the B-pillar back.

How the M177 EVO Makes 646 Horsepower

The 646 in the name is the output. Mercedes-AMG rates the reworked M177 EVO 4.0-litre V8 biturbo at 646 hp (475 kW) between 6,000 and 6,250 rpm, with 850 Nm from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Displacement is 3,982 cc. A 48-volt integrated starter generator sits on the engine, so this is still a mild-hybrid V8, not a plug-in.

The technical change that alters the character is a flat-plane crankshaft, the layout AMG used on the GT Black Series and is now folding into the M177 EVO family. It cuts rotating mass, helps the engine pick up revs and sharpens throttle response. That is a different beat from the cross-plane V8s that defined Affalterbach for two decades, and a particle filter will keep the soundtrack in check on the road.

Three cooling circuits look after the engine, the charge air and gearbox oil, and the 48-volt parts. The cold end of the exhaust was designed with Akrapovič and uses titanium. Power goes through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G torque-converter gearbox, with launch control recoded for rear-wheel drive. Mercedes-AMG quotes 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h, 11.4 seconds to 200 km/h and a 310 km/h top speed.

That 3.9-second figure is only 0.3 seconds quicker than the four-wheel-drive CLE 53’s 4.2-second claim, which is the point. The 646 is not a drag-strip special. It is a heavier, louder, more adjustable way to use the same wheelbase on a circuit.

The 4MATIC System Comes Out Entirely

Removing all-wheel drive is the chassis decision everything else hangs on. Weight falls, the rear axle becomes the whole conversation, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential can feed slip for a drift when the surface allows. AMG Traction Control, used with ESP off on a closed circuit, lets the driver pick rear-axle slip across nine stages.

Mercedes-AMG and KW automotive co-developed a steel coil-over setup with four-way dampers. Low-speed compression and rebound handle brake dive, squat and turn-in. High-speed circuits deal with kerbs and sharp bumps. Ceramic discs measure 420 by 40 millimetres up front with six-piston fixed calipers, and 360 by 32 millimetres at the rear with single-piston floating calipers. The calipers are painted gold.

THE 646 IN FOUR FIGURES

  • Kerb weight: 1,895 kg DIN, with a 56/44 front-to-rear split.
  • Downforce: Well over 250 kilograms at top speed from the wing, diffuser, louvers and flat floor.
  • Tyres: 305/30 ZR20 front and 335/30 ZR20 rear on 11.0J and 12.0J forged 20-inch wheels, using a further take on Mercedes-AMG ONE rubber that is exclusive to this car.
  • Size: 4,949 mm long, 1,987 mm wide and 1,420 mm high on the same 2,875 mm wheelbase as the CLE 53.

The front diffuser bolts between Street and Race on three fasteners. Race is for the track only and uses a Venturi profile to add front downforce. The centre section of the carbon wing adjusts with it. Bastian Baudy, chief design officer at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, called the carbon, the proportions and the size of the grille a vehicle of extremes.

The Hammer’s V8 Swap Lives in a New Coupe

Mercedes-AMG ties the 646 directly to the AMG 300 CE 6.0, the late-1980s special known as The Hammer, when Affalterbach pulled a six-cylinder out of a mid-size Mercedes and dropped in a V8. The method is the same. The CLE 53’s 3.0-litre inline-six comes out. A 4.0-litre V8 goes in. The work is done by hand, in small numbers, at the same town.

FROM THE HAMMER TO MYTHOS

  1. Late 1980s: AMG builds the 300 CE 6.0, The Hammer, by fitting a V8 into a six-cylinder Mercedes coupe.
  2. 2023: Mercedes folds the C-Class and E-Class two-doors into one CLE range, with the AMG CLE 53 as the top road car.
  3. 2024: The first Mythos model, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, arrives as an open two-seater with no roof or windscreen, limited to 250 cars.
  4. September 10, 2026: The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung joins Mythos as a closed, road-legal coupe limited to 30 examples, already allocated.

Thirty units is a tighter run than the old Black Series cars, which were rare and still reached customers in the hundreds. The PureSpeed used a 585 PS version of the 4.0 V8, ran 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and was limited to 315 km/h. The 646 is slower off the line on paper and more of a circuit tool, with the rear seats gone and the aero set up to make downforce rather than a speedster’s open-air theatre.

The widebody, the magno split and the carbon wing will read to a lot of buyers as a Black Series in all but name. That look is already splitting people who wanted a cleaner coupe. A filtered flat-plane V8 will not thunder like a 2000s AMG cross-plane either, which is an awkward brief for a car sold as an emotional object.

What the Showroom CLE 53 Still Offers

The CLE 53 4MATIC+ remains the AMG two-door a customer can actually buy. Mercedes-Benz lists a 449 hp six-cylinder CLE 53 with an extra 23 PS from its starter generator, 560 Nm, all-wheel drive, a 4.2-second 0-100 km/h run and a 250 km/h limiter. It still has four seats. It still has the assists the 646 deletes. Combined consumption on the AMG site sits between 9.1 and 9.5 l/100 km.

CLE 646 AND THE CLE 53 YOU CAN ORDER

Item CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung CLE 53 4MATIC+

Output 646 hp (475 kW) 449 hp (330 kW)
Torque 850 Nm 560 Nm
Drive Rear-wheel drive All-wheel drive

Top speed 310 km/h 250 km/h
Combined fuel 15.8 l/100 km 9.1-9.5 l/100 km

Mercedes-AMG has talked about a later V8 CLE for coupe and cabriolet customers, and it has been clear that the current C-Class is unlikely to get this engine because the remaining life of that car does not pay back the cost. The 646 is not that volume 63. It is 30 hand-built Mythos cars. Mercedes-Benz Australia said it has no plans to offer the Spezialanfertigung there, which fits a car that was never going to be a global range-topper.

Thirty Cars Left the Brochure Before Launch

Mercedes-AMG said the CLE 646 was sold out before its world premiere. No price was published. The allocation closed on a car most people met as a press film and a spec table.

On September 12, 2026, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team posted a clip of the coupe on the way to Madrid and wrote that it was officially on George Russell’s wishlist. The racing arm can borrow the halo for a weekend. Private buyers cannot get on the list.

That is the odd shape of the story. Affalterbach built the V8 CLE that the four-cylinder C 63 years made people ask for, then reserved it for 30 collectors. The six-cylinder CLE 53 stays in the configurator. The 646 is already spoken for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Spezialanfertigung Mean on the CLE 646?

Spezialanfertigung is German for custom-made or custom-built. Mercedes-AMG uses it because each car is a full Affalterbach rebuild of a CLE 53, with a new engine, a new driveline and a widened shell, rather than a regular AMG 63 derivative with a two-digit badge.

Does the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Use a Hybrid System?

Yes. A 48-volt integrated starter generator adds 17 kW (23 PS) and 205 Nm. Combined consumption is a preliminary 15.8 l/100 km with 359 g/km of CO₂, in CO₂ class G, so the 646 is a mild-hybrid V8, not a plug-in.

How Fast Is the CLE 646 From 0 to 300 km/h?

Mercedes-AMG quotes 36.8 seconds in Track aero and 36.2 seconds in Street aero. Street is the slipperier setting, with a Cd of 0.402 against 0.417 in Race, which is why the higher-speed run is quicker with the road diffuser.

What Does the Optional Performance Package Add?

The Performance Package adds six-point harnesses for the driver and passenger. Racing bucket seats, a roll-over bar and the deleted rear bench are already standard, so the option is the extra restraint hardware rather than the basic track layout.

His habit is to open the document before the summary of it. A company result is read from the filing rather than the press release, a court or regulatory decision from the judgment itself, a scientific finding from the paper and its methods section rather than the headline claim, and a sporting sanction from the governing body's own ruling. That approach shapes coverage across news, business and technology as much as science, sports and entertainment, and it carries into the lifestyle, travel, auto and gaming pages, where product specifications are checked against the manufacturer's sheet and, where possible, against Harry's own testing.
