Apple’s iPhone Duo Forecast Hits After Fiscal 2026
IDC’s 10 million iPhone Duo forecast is being booked as 2026 growth, but the $1,999 foldable ships October 23, after Apple’s fiscal year ends.
IDC puts iPhone Duo at 10 million phones and $27 billion in its first year, a forecast already treated as Apple’s 2026 growth engine. The device does not go on sale until October 23, after Apple’s fiscal 2026 year has closed.
The $1,999 foldable still matters for mix, share, and Samsung. It does not book into the fiscal year that just wrapped around it.
The $27 Billion Misses Fiscal 2026
Apple unveiled iPhone Duo on September 9. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16, and the first units go on sale October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more on October 30. Apple’s 2026 fiscal year ends in late September, so those dates sit in fiscal 2027.
IDC’s first-year take of $27 billion, including costlier storage tiers, was cast as about 6 percent of Apple’s expected fiscal 2026 revenue. That booking only works if you ignore the ship date. Ten million phones in the first 12 months after launch would run from October 2026 into October 2027, which is almost entirely the next fiscal year.
iPhone is also not waiting for a foldable rescue. For the nine months ended June 27, 2026, iPhone net sales were $196.5 billion, up 22 percent from $160.6 billion a year earlier, and Apple said that gain came from Pro models. Fiscal 2025 company revenue was $416 billion, with the September quarter at $102.5 billion. The slab lineup that launched with Duo, not Duo itself, is what still has time to print in fiscal 2026.
THE IPHONE DUO SALES CALENDAR
- September 9, 2026: Apple unveils iPhone Duo at its Surprise and Shine event, with John Ternus in the CEO role.
- October 16, 2026: Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.
- October 23, 2026: Sales begin in more than 70 countries and regions.
- October 30, 2026: Twenty-eight more countries and regions get the phone.
A $27 billion first-year stack on 10 million units implies an average selling price of $2,700. That is $701 above the $1,999 256GB floor and $101 above the 1TB list price, so IDC is assuming buyers skip the cheap configs.
Two Forecasts Split on When the Units Count
Two clocks are being used as if they were one. IDC’s 10 million figure is a first-year run from launch, not a 2026 calendar total. TrendForce, writing the day after the event, put about 5 million Duo units in 2026, which is a sales window of about 10 weeks.
That 5 million would be 24.8 percent of a foldable market TrendForce puts at about 20.2 million phones, up 0.5 percent from 2025. Strip Apple out and Android brands together ship about 15.2 million, down more than 20 percent. Duo is not arriving into a boom. It is the reason the category does not shrink.
IDC still has Apple near 30 percent of foldables in 2026 against Android at about 50 percent, after Android held close to 90 percent in 2025, and it has iOS at 40 percent of the category by 2027. Those shares live on the longer clock. The 2026 unit race, on TrendForce’s calendar, still has Samsung in front.
TRENDFORCE 2026 FOLDABLE SHIPMENTS
| Brand | 2026 units | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 7.1 million | 35.1% |
| Apple iPhone Duo | about 5 million | 24.8% |
| Huawei | about 5 million | 24.8% |
| All Android brands | about 15.2 million | down more than 20% |
| Global foldables | about 20.2 million | +0.5% year on year |
Francisco Jeronimo, IDC’s vice president for data and analytics, said the phone adds novelty and pulls high-end buyers who already pay top dollar. That is a mix story, not a mass-market one. Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management raised his Duo take after seeing the device and now has it at 10 percent of iPhone revenue in fiscal 2027, up from 5 percent, if about one-third of Pro Max buyers move over. Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives went further, to 15 to 20 percent of iPhone revenue, and pointed to about 300 million iPhones that have gone more than four years without an upgrade.
Every Duo Costs $700 More Than a Pro Max
Apple starts at $1,999, or $83.29 a month for 24 months on 256GB, which multiplies to $1,998.96. Storage then steps $200 to $2,199 for 512GB, $400 to $2,599 for 1TB, and $600 to $3,199 for 2TB. The 2TB Duo is the highest list price Apple has put on an iPhone.
The fold premium is a flat $700 over iPhone 18 Pro Max at every tier, from $1,299 against $1,999 at 256GB through $2,499 against $3,199 at 2TB. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, already on sale, starts at $1,899 for 256GB, $100 under Duo, then $2,099 for 512GB and $2,499 for 1TB.
US STORAGE PRICES, DUO VS PRO MAX
| Storage | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | $1,299 | $700 |
| 512GB | $2,199 | $1,499 | $700 |
| 1TB | $2,599 | $1,899 | $700 |
| 2TB | $3,199 | $2,499 | $700 |
$1,999 is a lot of money for a phone that still has to prove it is not a Pro Max with a hinge. The $700 is easier to swallow for someone already in that aisle than for someone buying a first iPhone, which is why Munster’s one-third of Pro Max buyers is the volume path that matters. If those customers just step sideways, Duo lifts average selling price and unit mix without adding a new owner.
Android Foldables Fall More Than 20 Percent
Samsung still ships the most foldables in 2026 on TrendForce’s count, at 7.1 million. Huawei matches Apple at about 5 million. The hurt sits under those ranks: Android as a group is down more than 20 percent, and most brands are flat or lower because component costs jumped. TrendForce said Duo’s extra demand is, for now, offsetting declines among the brands that already sell folding phones.
That is a rotten trade for Samsung’s phone group and a decent one for Samsung Display. Apple still depends on a limited Samsung Display panel supply for the folding OLEDs, under a multi-year exclusive setup that caps how fast output can rise. Samsung can lose foldable phone share to Apple and still invoice Apple for the glass that makes the loss possible.
Shoppers who wanted a folding phone in September already had Fold 8 in stores at $1,899, and in some places on promotion below that list. Duo’s October window leaves a month of demand on the table for a rival that is thinner, lighter, and in hand. A $100 gap at the base, plus weeks of waiting, is enough for buyers who were only holding out for an Apple badge.
What Apple Cut to Keep the Fold Thin
Closed, Duo is passport-sized, with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that Apple says is 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, and both panels share the same aspect ratio. Peak outdoor brightness is 3000 nits. The phone is grade 5 titanium in star white and night sky, IP68, and Apple puts it at 5.2 mm open and 11.3 mm closed.
TrendForce lists weight at about 254 g and describes a 10-layer inner stack with a nano-texture that cuts glare and makes the crease harder to see. The matte inner panel is the crease fix. It is also the thing that will look softer than a glossy slab to anyone who pays $1,999 and expects punch.
THE HARDWARE APPLE LEFT OFF
- Face ID: Touch ID sits in the side button so the phone unlocks open or closed, and an Apple Watch can unlock it too.
- Periscope zoom: The 48MP Fusion Main camera offers 2x optical-quality telephoto; there is no dedicated long lens, which saves thickness.
- Right-side cluster: Camera Control, Touch ID, and the rear cameras sit on the right, a layout left-handed buyers will feel even though recent iPhones already put the power button there.
- Color choice: Only star white and night sky ship at launch.
- Pencil timing: Apple Pencil with USB-C comes later in 2026, not on day one.
The cameras are where the fold does new work. Smart Take uses on-device models to fire when people are posed. Duo Preview puts the live finder on the outer display so subjects can see themselves. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on that outer panel to pull children’s eyes to the lens. A FaceTime camera sits under the inner display, and Duo FaceTime lets someone join on the outer screen. Those are the features that have to make a $700 step feel like more than extra glass.
A $1,999 book that gets used like a normal iPhone is a bad buy, and that is the honest risk if iOS 27’s split view, side controls, and StandBy poses do not become daily habits. Android foldables have lived with blown-up phone apps for years. Apple is betting the software is the part Samsung never finished.
Klarna and Trade-Ins Carry the $1,999 Sticker
Apple’s press materials put two monthly paths next to the $1,999 tag. Twenty-four months at $83.29 is the sticker spread out, a few cents under list. Apple Upgrade, a lease through Klarna, starts as low as $57.99 a month for 24 months in the US, which is a different product: you are renting, not paying the phone off. The Duo Case is $79 and the Folio with Kickstand is $129.
Trade-ins and those monthly plans are how a $1,999 phone sells to people who already own a Pro. Jeronimo’s point about nudging frequent upgraders sits on the same rail as Ives’s 300 million idle iPhones. Novelty pulls a four-year wait forward. It does not, by itself, create a new customer.
iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.
John Ternus, Apple CEO, September 9 newsroom
Ternus called it the most transformational change to iPhone since the original, with the largest iPhone display still pocketable, on A20 Pro. That line is the pitch. The books will judge a narrower claim: whether 5 million phones before December, and 10 million in the first year, come from new demand or from Pro Max owners paying $700 more, on a product that misses fiscal 2026 entirely.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16. The first phones arrive October 23, which is fiscal 2027.
