Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Revives the Clip-On Camera Bet
Huawei’s Ruiying Z10 for the Mate 90 Pro Max is a true 1-inch clip-on camera with 10x zoom, a form Sony and Motorola already abandoned.
Huawei’s Mate 90 Pro Max is due to gain a clip-on camera with its own 1-inch sensor on October 1, 2026. Chinese stores unboxed the Ruiying Z10 barrel on September 30, magnet-locked to the rear island of a handset that has not had its launch yet.
The idea is older than this phone. Sony, Motorola and LG all sold clip-on cameras, then walked away.
The Ruiying Z10 Shoots on Its Own Sensor
On September 29, the leaker Ice Universe posted video of a Mate 90 Pro Max with a long barrel fixed over the camera island. He said the add-on is a full camera, with its own imager and zoom glass, and that the phone’s rear cameras sit out of the shot once it clicks on.
This is the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max, paired with an external camera.
It is important to emphasize that this is a true “external camera,” not a traditional external lens or telephoto attachment.

The external camera itself features an independent 1-inch sensor, with up to 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom. In other words, from the sensor to the lens, it is a complete and independent imaging system in its own right.

Store notes published the next morning name the product HUAWEI Ruiying Z10. Light hits a 1-inch CMOS inside the barrel, then the phone supplies live view, storage and XMAGE colour. Huawei’s camera app already offers XMAGE Original, Vivid and Bright styles on the handset, and the Z10 notes say that same colour pipeline grades the clip-on’s files.
From 9.1 mm to 91 mm of physical glass, the path is a clean 10 times, which maps to 24 mm to 240 mm on a full-frame body. Aperture runs from f/2.0 to f/4.5 as the zoom moves, and a motor drives the group so the jump from 1x to 10x is a slide, not a camera switch. A ring on the barrel turns zoom, aperture and manual focus. Stills can be pushed to 100x digital zoom. Huawei has not published the sensor’s megapixel count.
The mount is a magnet plus metal contacts at the star-ring camera island, with a rotate-to-lock click that store staff can fit without looking. The phone then throws a connect prompt. Image data, in those same notes, rides Huawei’s NearLink radio while the contacts handle the physical join.
Only Two Mate 90 Models Carry the Contacts
The barrel is a separate product. It is not in the standard Mate 90 box, and a photo grip that shows up beside it in clips is extra as well. Third-party channel notes on September 30 put a lone Z10 around CNY 5,000 to CNY 6,000, a band Huawei has not confirmed.
WHICH MATE 90 BODIES TAKE THE Z10
- Pro Max Collector’s Edition: Native metal contacts on the rear island, so the barrel locks on with no case.
- RS Ultimate Design: Needs a dedicated case adapter to make the same join.
- Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro: No contacts and no mount, so the Z10 does not fit.
Ice Universe added that the imaging chain does not need the Pro Max’s own sensors, and that another phone could drive the barrel if someone built a secure mount and a proper data path. That remains a theory. The contacts Huawei is actually shipping sit on two trims.
Weibo tipsters Bald Panda and Smart Pikachu had already sketched the same glass in late September, including the 9.1 mm to 91 mm zoom and a motorised power-zoom group. Their notes also describe the phone’s own cameras, including a leaked 200-megapixel, 1/1.28-inch periscope on the Pro Max and RS. That onboard stack is what most buyers will shoot with, because most buyers will not carry the barrel.
Phone Makers Have Buried This Idea Before
A 1-inch sensor on a phone-shaped grip is not a 2026 invention. Sony shipped it as a cylinder you clamped to a handset and ran over Wi-Fi. Motorola later sold a magnetic block that replaced the rear camera outright. LG sold a grip that still used the phone’s own glass.
CLIP-ON CAMERAS AGAINST THE Z10
| Product | Year | Sensor | Zoom (35 mm equiv.) | How it talks to the phone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huawei Ruiying Z10 | 2026 | 1-inch CMOS | 24 mm to 240 mm (10x) | Magnets, metal contacts, NearLink |
| Sony DSC-QX100 | 2013 | 1.0-type, 20.2 MP | 28 mm to 100 mm (3.6x) | Wi-Fi and NFC |
| Hasselblad True Zoom | 2016 | 1/2.3-inch, 12 MP | 25 mm to 250 mm (10x) | Moto Mod magnets |
| LG CAM Plus | 2016 | None (uses the phone) | Wheel on the grip | Slide-in module on the LG G5 |
Sony’s published DSC-QX100 specifications list a 20.2-megapixel 1.0-type Exmor R sensor measuring 13.2 x 8.8 mm, behind a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* zoom that runs 10.4 mm to 37.1 mm, or 28 mm to 100 mm on a full-frame body at 3.6x, opening at F1.8 and closing to F4.9. Live view, the shutter and the file transfer all went over 802.11 Wi-Fi with NFC pairing. Sony’s own design team called it a lens-style camera built for a phone, shaped like an SLR optic so people would know to clip it on.
Motorola’s Hasselblad True Zoom, sold as a Moto Mod in 2016, used a smaller 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor and a 10x optical path equivalent to 25 mm to 250 mm. It weighed 145 g, snapped on with magnets, and overrode the phone’s rear camera, adding a shutter button and a zoom rocker. LG’s CAM Plus, by contrast, was a grip with a shutter and a zoom wheel. It never carried its own sensor.
THE CLIP-ON CAMERA TIMELINE
- September 2013: Sony shows the DSC-QX100, a 1.0-type lens-style camera that uses a phone as the screen and talks over Wi-Fi.
- 2016: Motorola ships the Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod with 10x optical zoom and its own 1/2.3-inch sensor.
- 2016: LG sells the CAM Plus grip for the G5, which still exposes the phone’s built-in cameras.
- September 29, 2026: Ice Universe posts the Mate 90 Pro Max with the Ruiying Z10 independent 1-inch barrel.
Each of those older products asked the owner to pack a second object. Sony’s laggy Wi-Fi link and the True Zoom’s bulk both became the joke. Huawei is betting a contact dock, a motorised 10x path and a 1-inch chip are enough to make people try the shape again.
NearLink Is Meant to Fix the Old Wi-Fi Lag
Sony’s QX100 had to join a phone like a hotspot. Pairing was slow, live view stuttered, and the module needed its own battery and memory card. The Z10 notes describe a different split: the barrel does the optics, the Mate 90 Pro Max does the compute, and the join is physical plus radio.
NEARLINK IN THIS RIG
- NearLink: A Huawei-backed short-range radio, also called SparkLink, written as a local link with more rate and less lag than classic Bluetooth or camera-to-phone Wi-Fi.
The International SparkLink Alliance publishes the NearLink short-range radio standard with two modes, a low-energy path and a wider broadband path. Store notes on the Z10 do not name which mode carries the viewfinder stream. They only say 星闪, Huawei’s Chinese name for NearLink, moves the image data while metal contacts hold the barrel on the island.
That is the part of the 2013 design Huawei can actually change. A 1-inch sensor and a zoom group are old news. A dock that the phone recognises as it clicks, with a radio that is already in Mate handsets for buds and car keys, is the new claim. Until someone times the shutter lag against a QX100 and against a small mirrorless, it is still a claim.
The Barrel Still Asks You to Carry Extra Weight
The loudest knock on the Z10 is the same knock that followed the QX100. Once the barrel is this long, a small mirrorless starts to look like the simpler tool, with a viewfinder, a proper grip and glass you already own. Store clips even lean into that line, asking why anyone would buy a DSLR, which is marketing, not a lab test.
Chinese rivals already sell teleconverters that sit over a phone’s own long camera. Those tubes magnify whatever the handset can already see, and the files still come from the phone’s sensor. The Z10’s whole pitch is that it stops doing that. The Mate 90 Pro Max becomes a screen, an OS and a processor, and the 1-inch chip in the barrel takes the picture. That is a cleaner optical story. It is also a heavier pocket.
Price sits in the same trap. A third-party band of CNY 5,000 to CNY 6,000 is unconfirmed, but even a cheaper figure is money on top of a Pro Max Collector’s Edition or an RS Ultimate Design. Those two phones are the top of a four-model stack. The people who can buy the contacts are the people already paying for Kirin 9050 Pro silicon, a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED and, on the RS, Huawei’s luxury trim. The Z10 then asks them to carry a second body anyway.
HarmonyOS 7, with no Google apps, is the software under all of this. The camera app has to make a motorised 24 mm to 240 mm barrel feel like a phone slider, or the ring on the lens will be the only control that makes sense. That software work is still behind the October 1 curtain.
October 1 Puts Four Phones and One Extra Camera on Sale
Huawei is due to unveil the Mate 90 series at 10:00 China time on October 1, 2026. Sales are listed to open at 12:08 the same day. Leaked store lists split the line into the Mate 90 with a Kirin 9030, the Mate 90 Pro with a Kirin 9035, and the Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design with a Kirin 9050 Pro. Digital Chat Station posted that chip split on Weibo. Huawei has not read it out on stage yet.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The date: The Mate 90 series is set for 10:00 China time on October 1, 2026, with sales listed at 12:08.
- The barrel: Ruiying Z10 is an independent 1-inch camera, 24 mm to 240 mm, f/2.0 to f/4.5, sold separately.
- The fit: Native contacts on the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition; a case adapter on the RS Ultimate Design.
- The stores: Units were unboxed in China on September 30, with a control ring and a rotate-to-lock mount on the island.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Sensor resolution: Huawei has not stated the Z10’s megapixel count or file formats.
- Official price: The CNY 5,000 to CNY 6,000 band is a third-party guess, not a Huawei figure.
- Image quality: No controlled comparison exists yet against a 1-inch compact or a cheap mirrorless.
- Other phones: Ice Universe’s other-handset theory, and any later Pura mount, are unproven.
At 10:00 China time on October 1, 2026, Huawei is due to put names and prices on four Mate 90 phones. The Z10 is listed as a separate line item beside them, which means the launch still has to sell the handsets to people who will never clip the barrel on.
