Citi Strata Elite Still Costs $595 After the Fee War

Citi still charges $595 for Strata Elite after Chase and Amex raised premium fees, booking a 38% Strata-family jump in new accounts.

Citi still charges $595 a year for the Strata Elite, the premium card it launched on July 28, 2025 to chase affluent travelers. Chase now lists a $795 annual fee on Sapphire Reserve, and American Express lifted Platinum to $895.

The cheaper price was the wager. Pam Habner, then head of U.S. branded cards and lending, said busy customers did not want a coupon book of perks. In 2026 the fee has not moved, the Strata family posted a sharp rise in new accounts, and the card still asks holders to book hotels in a portal, pick two of five “splurge” brands, and split a chauffeur credit across the calendar.

Four Years After Prestige, Citi Priced a Gap

Citi had been missing from the top of the travel-card shelf since it closed the Prestige card to new applicants in July 2021. The Strata Elite filled that hole four years later as the flagship of a three-card Strata lineup, sitting above the $95 Strata Premier and a no-fee Strata card.

On July 28, 2025, Citi said cardmembers could unlock nearly $1,500 in value a year, counting lounge memberships as well as statement credits, and pay $75 for each authorized user. Gonzalo Luchetti, then head of U.S. personal banking, said pricing had moved up and that people were willing to take on greater fees.

Habner sold the product as the smart choice for travelers who wanted high earn on hotels and dining without tracking a pile of unused coupons. Citi also called it the first card on Mastercard’s World Legend tier and the only Citi-branded card with American Airlines benefits built in, including ThankYou transfers into AAdvantage at 1:1 for Elite, Premier, and remaining Prestige accounts.

Citi Held the $595 Fee While Rivals Climbed

Chase had already reset the top of the market before Citi printed the first Elite cards. On June 17, 2025, it announced that Sapphire Reserve would rise from $550 to $795 for new accounts, with existing holders moving at the next anniversary after October 26, 2025. Chase still lists a $795 annual fee on Sapphire Reserve, plus $195 for each authorized user.

American Express followed on September 18, 2025, lifting Platinum from $695 to $895, a $200 increase that hit existing consumer accounts at the next renewal on or after January 2, 2026. Citi left Elite at $595 through 2026, which is $200 below Chase and $300 below Platinum.

THE PREMIUM FEE LADDER

  1. July 2021: Citi closes Prestige to new applicants and leaves the premium shelf.
  2. June 17, 2025: Chase raises Sapphire Reserve from $550 to $795.
  3. July 28, 2025: Citi launches Strata Elite at $595.
  4. September 18, 2025: American Express raises Platinum from $695 to $895.
  5. May 7, 2026: Habner tells investors the Strata family drove a 38% rise in new accounts.

That gap is the whole public bet. Citi did not try to out-coupon Platinum. It tried to be the expensive card that still looked cheaper.

Habner Promised a Card Without a Spreadsheet

The launch line that Citi wanted repeated was not about lounges. It was about labor.

You shouldn’t need a math degree and a spreadsheet to track your credit card benefits! We have curated flexible lifestyle benefits that we know our customers will want to use, because we asked them what they value.

Pam Habner, Head of U.S. Branded Cards and Lending, Citi launch release

Citi backed the pitch with a June-July 2025 poll, run with the research firm Material, of 1,000 adults who already paid $395 or more a year for a card. Seventy-five percent said customization, including opting into perks, was very or extremely important.

The product Citi actually shipped still has a calendar. Hotel value needs a two-night prepaid stay on cititravel.com. The chauffeur credit resets in two $100 halves. Dining at 6x is limited to Citi Nights, Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern. Splurge credits apply to two brands chosen from 1stDibs, American Airlines, Best Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation, with exclusions on the airline and concert names.

THE STRATA ELITE CREDIT RULES

  • Hotel $300: Once per calendar year, off a stay of two nights or more booked through Citi Travel, excluding taxes and fees.
  • Splurge $200: Statement credits on up to two of five listed brands, with stated exclusions on American Airlines and Live Nation.
  • Blacklane $200: Up to $100 from January through June and up to $100 from July through December on the chauffeur service.
  • TSA or Global Entry $120: A statement credit every four years for an eligible application fee.

Those four items are the cash-like stack. Recurring credits total $700 a year if a holder uses the hotel, Splurge, and Blacklane benefits in full. The $120 travel-document credit sits outside that annual total.

What the $595 Card Pays Back

Citi’s current benefits page still lists an up to $300 annual hotel benefit, the same Splurge and Blacklane credits, and the same lounge package that was in the launch release. The public welcome offer in 2026 reviews is 75,000 ThankYou points after $6,000 of spending in the first three months. Citi’s Strata family page says that bonus is unavailable if you currently have or previously had a Strata Elite account.

Earn rates are high only when spending goes through Citi’s rails. Hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on cititravel.com pay 12 points per dollar. Air travel on the same site pays 6. Restaurants pay 6 points during Citi Nights and 3 points the rest of the week. Everything else pays 1.5. There is no foreign-transaction fee.

THREE PREMIUM CARDS, THREE PRICE POINTS

Card Annual fee Authorized user Headline earn
Citi Strata Elite $595 $75 12x hotels via Citi Travel; 6x Citi Nights dining
Chase Sapphire Reserve $795 $195 8x Chase Travel; 4x direct flights and hotels
American Express Platinum $895 $195 5x flights and prepaid Amex Travel hotels

Lounge access is the other half of Citi’s “nearly $1,500” math. Priority Pass Select is valued at $469, with 1,500-plus lounges and up to two guests. Four Admirals Club passes a year, Citi says, are worth over $300 at nearly 50 clubs. Add the $700 in recurring credits and the advertised package is $1,469 before the occasional TSA credit, which is how Citi gets to nearly $1,500 without putting that sum in a cardholder’s checking account.

Citigold Offsets Cut the Fee for Wealth Clients

The people who see the smallest bill are already in Citi’s wealth channel. Qualifying Citigold clients get a $145 banking-relationship credit against the $595 fee, which leaves $450 net. Qualifying Citigold Private Clients get a $595 credit in year one, so the card can post at $0, then the same $145 credit in later years.

Habner and Luchetti said that link out loud. In a Citi perspectives note around launch, Luchetti called the relationship-tier credit proof of the tie between U.S. personal banking and Wealth. At Investor Day on May 7, 2026, Habner, by then head of U.S. Consumer Cards, said Strata Elite was “key to attracting affluent customers and deepening engagement with our Wealth clients.”

American Airlines is the other silent partner. Citi became the sole issuer of AAdvantage co-brand cards in 2025, converted the Barclays AA portfolio in April 2026, and used Elite to put Admirals Club passes and AAdvantage transfers on a Citi-branded piece of plastic. Scott Long, American’s senior vice president of AAdvantage, said the airline was deepening the partnership to combine AAdvantage with Citi rewards. Habner told the launch audience it was the only branded card with American benefits built in.

That is a different bet from beating Centurion lounges. Elite is a ThankYou earner that can feed AA, a Citigold retention tool, and a way to keep affluent spend inside a bank that also wants mortgages and investment accounts from the same household.

The Strata Family Lifted New Accounts 38 Percent

Citi has not published Elite-only account numbers. It has published the figure it wants investors to remember. Habner said that when Citi introduced the Strata family last year, the bank saw a 38% increase in new accounts. She called that a big number, then separated it from the 18% account growth tied to becoming American’s sole issuer and from the Costco partnership, which she put at similar strength.

U.S. Consumer Cards, she said, is the number-three issuer with about 14% of loans and about 70 million customers, or roughly one in four U.S. adults with a Citi card. The business acquired 13 million new accounts last year, ran a record $626 billion in spend, and posted $18.3 billion of revenue, up 8.4%. Lifetime value of new accounts was up 20% since 2022, with retention at 98%.

WHAT CITI TOLD INVESTORS

  • Strata family: 38% increase in new accounts after the 2025 launch.
  • Card spend: $626 billion in 2025, a record for the business.
  • Cards revenue: $18.3 billion, growing at 8.4%.
  • Scale: 13 million new accounts and about 70 million customers.

Citi Travel is the pipe those 12x hotel points run through. Habner said spend on the program was up 32% after the Booking.com partnership, and that customers who use Citi Travel spend seven times more. Customers who redeem ThankYou points spend nearly ten times more. In the 2025 shareholder letter, Citigroup said U.S. Personal Banking revenue grew 5%, that Strata Elite rounded out the premium suite, and that the firm would run U.S. Consumer Cards as a standalone business after more than doubling returns there.

What has not shown up in those slides is a mass walkout from Sapphire Reserve or Platinum. Early reviews of Elite already noted that Chase and Amex still owned the denser lounge networks and the broader coupon piles, and that Citi’s 1.5x base rate outside dining and the portal was conservative. A year later, points writers who actually used the credits are describing the same split: the fee is the bargain in the trio, the product is narrower, and the people who already keep money at Citigold are the ones for whom the math is clean.

Holders Can Step Down to Strata Premier

The quiet competitor inside Citi’s own wallet is the $95 Strata Premier. It shares ThankYou points and the same transfer partners, including American Airlines at 1:1. It does not carry Priority Pass, the Blacklane halves, or the $300 hotel hit on a two-night Citi Travel stay. After a year with Elite, some travelers who took the $595 card are moving back to Premier because they were booking chauffeur rides and portal hotels to “use” benefits they would not have bought at cash price.

Citi is still selling Elite as a lifestyle ticket. In mid-September 2026 the bank’s Citibank account was pitching Strata Elite cardmembers a paid Priceless dinner in Austin on October 21, 2026, with a chef and a McLaren Formula 1 guest. That is the affluent calendar, not a simplified earn rate.

The $595 fee is the part of the 2025 wager that survived contact with Chase and Amex. The spreadsheet Habner said customers would not need is still how the credits work, and the accounts Citi counts in that 38% figure include the cheaper Strata cards around Elite. Holders who want the transfers without the portal rules already have a $95 door back out.
