Cboe’s 25-Year SPX Lock Covers Tokenized Options Too
Cboe extended exclusive SPX options rights through 2051, adding 19 years of sole listing, while tokenized contracts stay an unbuilt clause.
Cboe Global Markets locked exclusive rights to S&P 500 Index options through 2051 in a 25-year deal with S&P Dow Jones Indices. The pact, announced on September 29, 2026, also lets the two firms explore tokenized options contracts, with no chain, no filing, and no start date attached.
The asset Cboe actually bought is time. Exclusive U.S. listing rights for those options had been set to end on December 31, 2032. The new term adds 19 extra years of sole listing, and any tokenized contract that still needs the S&P 500 options license would sit inside that same grant.
Cboe Bought 19 Extra Years of SPX Exclusivity
Cboe and S&P DJI, a division of S&P Global, posted a 25-year extension of exclusive licensing that keeps Cboe as the only U.S. venue for flagship SPX options through 2051. Cboe shares closed at $261.75 that session, up $8.49, or 3.35%, on volume of 2,569,726, per the ticker on Cboe’s investor site.

Cboe’s 2025 annual report on Form 10-K still listed exclusive rights through December 31, 2032, with the wider S&P license running through December 31, 2033. That clock was not about to run out. Management chose to close the renewal risk about six years early.
The 10-K is blunt about why the date matters. SPX options “contribute substantially” to volumes and transaction fees, and Cboe warned that if an index owner declined to renew on exclusive terms, the product could be multiply listed and lose share. Tuesday’s signing takes that warning off the table until 2051.
THE SPX LICENSE CLOCK
- 1983: Cboe launches SPX options with S&P, starting the partnership Craig Donohue, Cboe’s chief executive, later called 43 years old.
- March 13, 2013: Cboe and S&P DJI extend exclusive listing rights through 2032 and non-exclusive rights through 2033, replacing a term that had been set to expire in 2022.
- February 20, 2026: Cboe’s 2025 10-K still cites exclusive S&P 500 Index options rights through December 31, 2032.
- September 29, 2026: The firms extend exclusive SPX rights through 2051 and name tokenized options contracts as one possible area of work.
Donohue tied the new term to both the cash product and the VIX suite that is built from SPX quotes. He said the extension lets Cboe grow those franchises and gives customers “certainty and continuity” in the products.
The Index Is Already Trading on Hyperliquid
S&P DJI did not wait for Cboe to test on-chain S&P 500 exposure. The index owner has been selling the benchmark into digital products that are not listed SPX options, which is the gap the new clause tries to cover without giving up the exclusive.
WHERE S&P ALREADY TOOK THE INDEX ON-CHAIN
- Fund token: In July 2025 S&P DJI licensed the S&P 500 to Centrifuge, and in September 2025 Centrifuge launched SPXA, which S&P called the first licensed S&P 500 index fund token.
- Perpetual contract: On March 18, 2026, S&P DJI licensed the index to Trade[XYZ] for the first officially licensed S&P 500 perpetual on Hyperliquid, aimed at eligible non-U.S. investors and running 24 hours a day.
- Options clause: The September 29, 2026 Cboe deal lists tokenized options contracts as a product the two firms may pursue, without naming a chain or a start date.
S&P’s own Trade[XYZ] release said more than $1 trillion trades daily in S&P 500-linked futures, options, ETFs, and structured products. Cameron Drinkwater, chief product and operations officer at S&P DJI, said that Hyperliquid deal “expands access and utility of our flagship benchmarks within digital trading environments.” XYZ said its markets had exceeded $100 billion in volume since October 2025, with an annualized run rate above $600 billion; that tally is XYZ’s whole book, not the S&P contract alone.
The S&P 500 is the definitive barometer of U.S. equity market performance and the most widely tracked index in the world. Investor demand for exposure to U.S. equities continues to accelerate, and we see a future where every investor, everywhere, can access this benchmark in the format that best suits their needs.
Catherine Clay, Chief Executive Officer, S&P Dow Jones Indices
Clay’s “every format” line is the tell. S&P can license the index for a fund token and a perpetual. What it sold Cboe, again, is the U.S. exclusive on standardized S&P 500 index options. Crypto posts on September 30 treated the new sentence as Wall Street moving options on-chain. The harder reading is simpler: S&P already rented the benchmark to a 24/7 chain, and Cboe paid to keep listed options, including any later tokenized version that needs this license, off that path.
Why SPX Options Trade in a Different Lane
SPX is not a ticker for the S&P 500 ETF. It is a cash-settled index option that lists only at Cboe, which is why a 25-year exclusive still moves the stock. SPY options, by contrast, trade on multiple U.S. options exchanges and deliver fund shares.
SPX VERSUS SPY AT A GLANCE
| Feature | SPX Index Options | SPY ETF Options |
|---|---|---|
| Where they list | Cboe exclusive | Multi-listed |
| Settlement | Cash | Shares of the ETF |
| Exercise style | European, at expiration only | American, can be exercised early |
| Extended hours | Global Trading Hours, 8:15 p.m. to 9:25 a.m. ET | Standard market hours |
Cboe’s product comparison also flags cash-settled European-style SPX options as 60/40 contracts under section 1256 of the tax code, a treatment SPY options do not get. Mini-SPX (XSP) is one-tenth of SPX and uses the same cash, European design. Those mechanics, plus a hybrid floor that still handles large and complex orders, are why institutions hedge with SPX even as retail found same-day expirations.
In a September 30, 2025 note, Cboe said SPX had taken 74 percent of S&P 500-linked notional across SPX, SPY options, and E-mini options, up from 58% over five years, while SPY options sat at 15% and E-mini options at 11%. Linked notional average daily volume across those three products rose from $0.5 trillion to $3.3 trillion in that span. In the 0DTE slice, SPX held 77% of that linked volume. Global Trading Hours volume in SPX had risen eight-fold since 2020, per the same note.
Options and Futures Still Supply Most of the Revenue
The exclusive is expensive to lose because of how Cboe makes money. In 2025 the firm reported revenues less cost of revenues of $2,429.1 million, up 17%. About 68% of that net revenue came from the options and futures segments, and the 10-K said most of that slice came from exclusively licensed index products such as SPX and from VIX products built on Cboe’s own methodology.
SPX IN 2025
- Annual volume: 970.6 million SPX contracts, a record and a 25% rise from 2024.
- Daily pace: Average daily volume of 3.9 million contracts, the fourth straight annual record.
- Same-day share: 59% of that SPX volume was 0DTE, according to Cboe’s 2025 annual report to shareholders.
- Heat: 29 of the 30 busiest SPX days on record fell in 2025, the same report said, though some of those marks were later passed in 2026.
Derivatives markets net revenue, a separate caption that includes SPX and VIX fees, rose 22% to $1,341.0 million. Across Cboe’s four U.S. options exchanges, 4.6 billion contracts traded in 2025, or 18.4 million a day, a sixth straight record year. Index options average daily volume was up 21%.
The tape did not cool after year-end. In the second quarter of 2026 Cboe posted options net revenue of $473.9 million, up 30%, with index options average daily volume of 6.2 million, up 32%. SPX itself averaged 5.1 million contracts a day that quarter, including 3.1 million 0DTE. Those are quarterly records, not a replacement for the 3.9 million full-year 2025 average.
No Blockchain, Settlement Model, or Start Date
The tokenization sentence is real, and it is thin. The joint release says the firms “may also collaborate to pursue innovation beyond traditional index derivatives, including new products like tokenized options contracts.” That is permission, not a listing. No one named a blockchain, a clearinghouse, a wallet flow, or a launch quarter.
This extension allows us to further grow our SPX and VIX franchises, while providing the certainty and continuity that our customers have come to expect in these products. It also gives us significant runway to pursue the next frontier of innovation and stay ahead of evolving investor needs and emerging technologies.
Craig Donohue, Chief Executive Officer, Cboe Global Markets, September 29, 2026
A tokenized SPX-style contract, if it is still an options contract on the S&P 500, would be a new product rather than a wrapper on today’s open interest. It would still need the index license Cboe just renewed. That is the second-order fact the crypto recap skipped: the clause does not punch a hole in the exclusive. It parks any later on-chain options work inside it.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The grant: Cboe keeps exclusive U.S. rights to offer trading in SPX options through 2051.
- The option: Tokenized options contracts are named as one possible area of joint work.
- The volume: SPX traded 970.6 million contracts in 2025, averaging 3.9 million a day.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The rails: No blockchain, settlement model, or trading structure was disclosed.
- The calendar: No product filing or launch date was given.
- The overlap: The firms have not said how a tokenized contract would clear against, or sit beside, listed SPX.
Other market operators have already backed tokenized securities platforms, and the SEC has been rewriting transfer-agent rules for distributed-ledger records. That is not an approval of a Cboe tokenized option. Until a filing appears, the chain talk is a line in a license, not a market.
A Small 2027 Reset in the Royalty Bill
Cboe pays S&P DJI royalties on S&P 500 options and on VIX options and futures, usually per contract. The 2025 10-K said royalty fees rose with trading in licensed products, which is the bill for a year when SPX volume jumped 25%. Financial terms of the new license were not published, matching the 2013 amendment, which also kept the rate card private.
Cboe said 2026 royalty fee terms do not change. Updated terms begin in 2027. The firm estimates that reset will have a de minimis effect on 2027 net revenue growth once organic volume, pricing, and the rest of the business are counted. Investors who bid the stock up 3.35% on announcement day were pricing the exclusive, not a surprise jump in the S&P invoice.
S&P can keep licensing the index for a perpetual on Hyperliquid and a fund token on Centrifuge. Listed SPX options, and any tokenized options contract that still needs this license, stay on Cboe’s clock until 2051. That is the deal that closed on September 29, 2026. The chain product can wait.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Other S&P Indexes Does Cboe Hold Exclusive U.S. Options Rights On?
Cboe’s 2025 10-K says the firm holds exclusive U.S. rights to list options on the S&P 100 Index, the S&P 500 ESG Index, and the S&P Select Sector Indices, in addition to the S&P 500 Index that underlies SPX. Those extra grants sit in the same S&P relationship that Tuesday’s extension stretched to 2051 for SPX, though the release described the new exclusive in terms of flagship S&P 500 Index options.
How Is the VIX Index Tied to SPX Options?
The VIX Index is not a stock. Cboe calculates it from the mid-points of real-time SPX option bid and ask quotes across a wide range of strikes, as a 30-day view of expected S&P 500 volatility. VIX futures listed in 2004 and VIX options in 2006, and their final settlement uses a special opening quotation of that index. Donohue grouped the VIX franchise with SPX when he described what the 2051 extension protects.
How Large Is a Mini-SPX Contract Next to SPX?
Mini-SPX options, ticker XSP, are sized at one-tenth of an SPX contract and use the same cash settlement and European exercise. Cboe also lists Nanos, which are one-hundredth of XSP, so one-thousandth of full SPX, aimed at smaller accounts. Both remain Cboe products on the S&P 500 Index, not substitutes that other U.S. options exchanges can copy under this exclusive.
When Was the Last Long SPX License Extension Before 2026?
Cboe’s March 13, 2013 announcement extended exclusive rights to list S&P 500 and S&P 100 options through 2032 and non-exclusive rights through 2033. Before that amendment the license had been set to expire in 2022. SPX averaged nearly 700,000 contracts a day in 2012, the 2013 release said, against 3.9 million in 2025.
