Blood Mew Turns a Foil Splice Into the Chase
A 30th Celebration foil-splice nicknamed Blood Mew has no completed sales. Easy pack hits pushed the hunt onto a factory defect quality control missed.
A factory foil splice has turned two red-stained Mew cards from Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration into a hunt called Blood Mew. Card trader Miss Natoshi posted both copies on September 18, 2026, and asked if anyone would pay up.
The set launched worldwide on September 16, 2026 with foil on every card and a Pikachu in every pack. Those easy hits left the flip market hunting a defect quality control was supposed to throw away.
Red Tape on a Foil Roll
The usual Mew art in this set sits in a bright golden grove. On the Blood Mew copies, a thick wash of deep red covers roughly the lower half of the card, so the creature looks like it is sinking into, or climbing out of, a pool of ink.
That look matches a known press mistake, not a hidden parallel. CGC Cards, which grades factory errors, describes a holo splice as what happens when a holographic foil roll runs out and a new roll is joined on. The join is made with brightly colored tape joining foil rolls. Sheets that still carry that tape are meant to be scrapped. If one reaches the cutter, finished cards leave the plant with a sharp strip or a stained wash across the art.
When the end of a holographic roll is reached during the printing process, the card stock must be spliced to a new roll. This is typically done using a strip of brightly colored tape that joins the two rolls together.
CGC Cards Error Guide
CGC puts those presses at up to 15,000 sheets an hour, with 100, 110, or 121 cards on a sheet, which can mean as many as 1.8 million cards an hour from one machine. A tape join that slips through is not a hand-painted 1-of-1. It is a strip that can stain several cards in the same column. Later photos of the red sitting in a different place on other Mews fit that sheet math. They do not prove a new print run of cursed cards.
Photographs still cannot sort tape from extra ink on any one copy. The nickname stuck because the stain is loud, and because it landed on Mew.
Two Copies and Zero Sales
Miss Natoshi’s post showed two cards and gave the mistake its name in one line. The question under the photos is the whole market in miniature.
Crazy blood mew misprint on TWO cards. Do you think someone is going to pay up for these?
Miss Natoshi, card trader, on X, September 18, 2026
As of September 20, no completed Blood Mew sale had posted. Resellers still tested six-figure asking prices on auction listings and social posts. Those numbers are asks. They are not comps.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The nickname: Miss Natoshi posted two red-stained Mews on September 18 and called them blood mew.
- The factory path: The stain fits a holo splice, the colored-tape join CGC says should be discarded before cutting.
- The sale record: Zero completed Blood Mew sales had been logged by September 20.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Copy count: The original post held two cards; later pulls claimed the red in a different spot, which may be the same sheet, not a new family of cards.
- The exact cause on each copy: A photo cannot prove tape, extra ink, or both.
- A clearing price: Six-figure asks are a wish list until money actually clears.
The louder problem is not the nickname. Intended hits in 30th Celebration got easier to pull, so the flip crowd needed an object you cannot order from a checklist. A red Mew that might be scarce is doing the job the set tried to take away from Special Illustration Rares.
30th Celebration Put a Pikachu in Every Pack
The Pokémon Company International revealed the set on June 1, 2026, and published the first product wave on June 30. It is the TCG’s first worldwide same-day paper launch. English players could use the cards in Pokémon TCG Live from September 15 at 10 a.m. PDT, a day before shops.
Official pages sell the abundance in plain language. Every card is foil, including Basic Energy. Open a pack and you are guaranteed one of 30 different Pikachu cards, each with its own art. The first Futuristic rare cards are Mewtwo and Mew, drawn by Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN. Thirty older cards also return as a Classic Collection, stamped for the anniversary and not legal in Standard.
WHAT EVERY ENGLISH PACK GUARANTEES
- Foil on everything: The Pokémon Company says every card is foil, Basic Energy included.
- Five foils plus Energy: English product pages put five foil cards in the pack, plus one foil Basic Energy.
- A Pikachu floor: One of those five is always one of the 30 Pikachu rares.
- No hunt for the mouse: Completing the 30 is a volume and trade problem, not a one-in-a-hundred pull.
The Elite Trainer Box, out on launch day, holds nine 30th Celebration booster packs, a Nidorina promo, and the usual kit. Pack logs circulating after release put Special Illustration Rares near 1 in 18 packs, against the 1 in 100 rate that defined recent English sets, with Illustration Rares close to one in five. Those logs are not an official rate sheet. They match what the set was built to do: kids can pull the pretty cards.
Sealed product did not follow the same path. Some Elite Trainer Boxes cleared just over $300 on eBay in the first 24 hours, a multiple of list that shows the shortage moved onto the box, not the hit. Once packs are open, the scarce layer is whatever the printer failed to catch.
The Yen Prices for Ghosted Mews
A Japanese collector roundup dated September 17 counted 87 posts about 30th Celebration errors on day one. That is a count of posts, not unique cards, and it still shows how fast the hunt left the intended checklist.
Money did change hands on other defects. It did not change hands on Blood Mew.
EARLY JAPAN ERROR SALES
| Error | Sales counted | Range | Median | Normal copy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mew ex with Mewtwo ghosting | 9 Mercari sales | ¥20,000 to ¥150,000 | about ¥56,000 | about ¥14,000 |
| Mewtwo ex ghosting | 5 sales | ¥17,000 to ¥58,000 | about ¥30,000 | about ¥10,000 |
| Poke Pad with a faint Gholdengo shadow | about 14 Mercari sales | clustered near ¥1,000 | bids fell to ¥499 | early Yahoo bid ¥3,333 |
The Mew ex ghosting median of about ¥56,000 is four times a normal copy at about ¥14,000. The Mewtwo ex median of about ¥30,000 is three times a normal copy at about ¥10,000. The top Mew ex ghosting sale, ¥150,000 ($956), is the figure that got copied onto Blood Mew posts. It belongs to a different card.
Asks on some Japanese errors reached ¥3 million. Those were listings. The Poke Pad shadow, which showed up often, saw Yahoo bids drop from ¥3,333 to ¥980 and then ¥499 as more copies appeared. That is the path a “rare mistake” takes when the sheet was large. Blood Mew has not had a sale, so it has not had that test.
Older sets already taught the same lesson. A relief error can double a card for a week and then sit there. A corrected version can outprice the typo, as with the old Ancient Mew “Nintedo” line. Drama in the art is not a price floor. A documented population and a grader’s label are.
RGB Mew Is a Different Card
Before Blood Mew had a name, the set’s actual secret Mew was already moving money. RGB Mew is an official rarity, three full-art cards numbered R/RGB, G/RGB, and B/RGB, also illustrated by YOSHIROTTEN, nodding at the original Red, Green, and Blue games. The art looks like a single-color channel, which is why people called the cards ugly and then paid for them anyway.
A raw blue RGB Mew listing on eBay closed at $20,000 around September 15, before some shops had street product. Later English copies have sold in a lower band, about $5,000 to $8,000, and TCGPlayer showed a $5,000 recent sale on the blue card with listings starting at $4,500. The $20,000 close accepted Best Offers, so the public page does not prove a full-price wire. Treat it as an opening print, not a stable quote.
RGB Mew is in the set on purpose. Blood Mew is a stained copy of a Mew that was supposed to look gold. Mixing them is how a six-figure ask gets a free ride on a real, if messy, RGB market. One is a checklist card with a collector number. The other is a QC miss that The Pokémon Company has not named.
Graders Will Decide If the Red Is Real
The company has not confirmed Blood Mew, Energy Mewtwo, or the other viral defects as official versions. Identification sits with collectors, misprint specialists, and grading desks. PSA publishes which Pokemon print mistakes it will label. CGC already treats a holo splice as a major error type. A slab that names the splice is the difference between a stained card and a listed variety. Until that label exists, every raw Blood Mew is a photo and a story.
The Japanese roundup also flagged fake Mew ex cards on flea-market apps, with tells in the 30th anniversary mark, the Energy symbol, and infrared or UV reaction. A nickname that can move six-figure asks will pull counterfeits faster than it pulls a first sale. Anyone buying on a social listing is betting they can see a tape join that a factory missed, and that a printer in a back room cannot fake.
More paper is still coming, which cuts both ways for anyone treating two red cards as a finished population.
PACKS STILL NOT ON SHELVES
- October 2, 2026: Mini Tins, the Booster Bundle, and the Binder Collection arrive.
- October 30, 2026: Espeon ex and Umbreon ex Battle Decks land.
- November 6, 2026: The Ditto Premium Collection, the Mew and Mewtwo Figure Collections, and the Day and Night Ultra-Premium Collections close the wave.
Every extra case is another chance a splice sheet got packed, and another chance the red stain looks common. The set already did what it was designed to do with Pikachu and the new rares. Blood Mew is the leftover scarce object, and it still has not sold.
