Apple Closes the iOS 27 Downgrade Path After One Week

Apple unsigned iOS 26.6.2 seven days after iOS 27, and iOS 26.7 has no iPhone restore file, so a wipe now installs 27.

Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2 on Monday, September 21, 2026, seven days after iOS 27 shipped, so iPhones already on 27 cannot restore any iOS 26 build. Firmware tracker Aaron Perris posted that the last restorable iOS 26 file had gone unsigned. iOS 26.7, shipped the same day as 27, still has no iPhone restore image.

If you never installed iOS 27, you can keep running iOS 26. A wipe, a recovery-mode restore, or a Finder restore on iPhone 11 and newer now lands on iOS 27.

Apple Stopped Signing iOS 26.6.2 on Monday

Signing is Apple’s live server check. Finder, the Apple Devices app, and iTunes ask Apple whether a firmware file is still allowed before they write it to a phone. When the check fails, the install stops, even if you already have the file on disk.

Perris, who watches those servers, wrote that Apple was no longer signing iOS 26.6.2, which closed the official path from iOS 27 back to iOS 26.

Apple is no longer signing iOS 26.6.2, this means you can’t downgrade to iOS 26 anymore from iOS 27

iOS 27 reached iPhones on Monday, September 14, 2026. The unsign came seven days later. That is the same gap Apple used in September 2025, when it unsigned iOS 18.6.2 a week after iOS 26.0.

iOS 26.6.2 itself shipped on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 as build 23G90. Apple published no CVE entries for it. The public note was a fix for an issue that blocked software updates over a cellular connection, the exact download path a lot of people use on launch day. The build that helped phones fetch iOS 27 is the one Apple then stopped allowing as a restore target.

The 82 Fixes Live Only as an OTA

Apple released iOS 26.7 the same morning as iOS 27, as build 23H24, for iPhone 11 and later. It is the security branch for people who do not want 27 yet. The Mac Admins SOFA feed lists 82 security issues in iOS 26.7. Apple’s own advisory is a long component-by-component list, not a headline count.

Among the entries in the security content of iOS 26.7 are a race in AVEVideoEncoder (CVE-2026-84607) that could let a sandboxed app run code with kernel privileges, a Bluetooth out-of-bounds write (CVE-2026-65414) that Apple says may allow remote code execution, and an APFS bounds bug (CVE-2026-84523) that can write kernel memory. The iOS 27 advisory repeats those identifiers and then adds more, including baseband and Apple Account issues that do not appear on the 26.7 page.

THE LAST THREE IPHONE BUILDS

Build Released iPhone restore file Security notes
iOS 26.6.2 (23G90) September 8, 2026 Yes, now unsigned No published CVE entries
iOS 26.7 (23H24) September 14, 2026 No 82 issues, SOFA count
iOS 27.0 (24A437) September 14, 2026 Yes, still signed Shared holes plus extra system entries

The IPSW site that tracks signed IPSW restore files listed iOS 27.0 as signed for 34 devices after launch and had no iOS 26.7 restore row for iPhone at all. That is the bind. The last file you can still hold on disk as a full restore image is a cellular-download fix. The build that closes the 82 issues is an over-the-air package you cannot point Finder at.

Why iPhone Restores Cannot Land on iOS 26.7

Apple treats most.7 updates as Settings-only patches. A restore file appears when a device family is being left on that branch because it cannot take the new major version. iPhone 11 still qualifies for iOS 27, so 26.7 never needed an IPSW. The zip files circulating for 26.7 are OTA deltas. They will not satisfy a Finder restore.

So the previous major version is still a living security branch, but only as a one-way Settings update. You can enter 26.7 from 26.6.2. You cannot put 26.7 back on a phone that has been erased, and you cannot use it as a landing pad from 27.

IF YOU NEVER INSTALLED IOS 27

  • Stay on 26.6.2: The phone keeps running, but a DFU or recovery restore will no longer reinstall that build.
  • Take 26.7 over the air: You pick up the 82 fixes, plus Apple Music Playlist Playground, Concerts, and 8 new emoji, with no path to restore that build from a computer.
  • Install iOS 27: You get the new Siri stack and the longer security list, and you give up iOS 26 for good.

A backup made after the 27 install will not restore onto 26. Anyone who wanted a reversible trial needed an archived 26-era backup taken before they tapped Upgrade. That window is closed for phones already on 27.

Last September Closed the Same Seven-Day Window

This is now a September habit, not a one-off. In 2025 Apple shipped iOS 26.0 on September 15, then unsigned iOS 18.6.2 on September 22. Firmware watchers said then what they said this week: 18.7 stayed signed as an OTA, with no IPSW for phones that could take 26.

TWO SEPTEMBER LOCKS

  1. September 15, 2025: iOS 26.0 ships as the new major version.
  2. September 22, 2025: Apple stops signing iOS 18.6.2, ending official rollbacks from iOS 26.
  3. September 14, 2026: iOS 27.0 and iOS 26.7 ship together.
  4. September 21, 2026: Apple stops signing iOS 26.6.2, ending official rollbacks from iOS 27.

Seven days, twice. The people who treat the first week of a new iOS as a test drive are working against that clock, and the clock is no longer informal. Once the previous restore build goes unsigned, Settings will not offer a way back, and neither will a cable.

Siri AI Bugs Now Have No Official Exit

iOS 27 is the release Apple describes as the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. The new assistant is not on every phone that can install 27. Apple limits Siri AI on iPhone 16 and 15 Pro models (all iPhone 16 units and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max). Some of the on-device voice work is narrower still, on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro and later. Features can also vary by region.

Software updates, like this one, add new features and improvements that may affect performance and/or battery life.

Apple, About iOS 27 Updates

That line is doing a lot of work this week. After install, phones rebuild search indexes, refresh apps, and prepare data for Siri. Heat and faster drain show up in that window, and Apple tells people the extra load is expected. Separate from that indexing pass, the new Siri has been throwing “Sorry, something went wrong,” missing Reminders lists, and failing to see alarms that are still on the phone. Some Software Update screens also presented a 26.7 package after a tap that was supposed to fetch 27.

The people hunting for a rollback are not trying to undo Liquid Glass. They want out of a Siri that cannot find a grocery list, and out of a phone that runs warm while “Optimizing Search and Siri” sits in Settings. Unofficial restore and unlock shops that still targeted iOS 26 lost their signed landing pad in the same move. For anyone already on 27, the practical fix is now 27.0.1, not 26.6.2.

A12 iPads Still Get a Signed 26.7 File

iPhone and iPad split here. iPadOS 27 starts at iPad (9th generation), iPad Air (4th generation), iPad mini (6th generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th generation). iPadOS 26.7 still covers the older set: 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad (8th generation), and iPad mini (5th generation).

Those leftover iPads cannot take 27, so Apple published iPadOS 26.7 restore images for them, build 23H24, and was still signing those files on September 22, 2026. That is the classic.7 exception. The phones that can run 27 do not get it. A bricked iPhone 11 and a bricked iPad (8th generation) no longer share a restore story.

Enterprise delay windows still apply on the 26.7 branch. SOFA’s 14-day deferral for 26.7 becomes visible on September 27, 2026, which is how a managed iPhone can sit on 26.6.x a little longer. It does not bring back a signed 26.6.2 IPSW, and it does not create a 26.7 restore file for iPhone.

If the phone is already on iOS 27, the next signed install Apple will allow is a newer 27 build. If it is still on iOS 26, the only clean security move that stays on that major version is the 26.7 OTA, taken before anyone puts the device in recovery mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Apple Signing Mean for an iOS Restore?

During a restore, the computer sends Apple a unique chip identifier plus the build you asked for, and Apple’s servers return a one-time ticket. If the build is unsigned, that ticket never arrives. Apple’s restore-error list includes “The device isn’t eligible for the requested build,” which is the message that now appears if you try to put iOS 26.6.2 back on a phone that has left it.

Can You Still Stay on iOS 26 Without Installing iOS 27?

Yes, if the iPhone is already running iOS 26 and you never erase it. Settings can still offer iOS 26.7 as an over-the-air update, and that package also adds Playlist Playground and Concerts in Apple Music plus 8 new emoji. The moment you enter recovery mode or ask Finder to restore, the signed target on iPhone 11 and newer is iOS 27.0.

Why Did Apple Skip an iOS 26.7 Restore File for iPhone?

Apple has used.7 updates as Settings-only security branches for several years, and it publishes a restore file mainly when a device is being frozen on that branch. iPhone 11 still receives iOS 27, so 26.7 did not need an IPSW. iPad families that stop at iPadOS 26 did get a 26.7 restore image, which is the same split used last year with iOS 18.7.

Which iPhones Include Siri AI in iOS 27?

Apple’s own iOS 27 notes limit Siri AI to all iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. An iPhone 15 or iPhone 14 can still install iOS 27 and get the shared security fixes, child-account controls, and Liquid Glass slider, without the new Siri app, onscreen awareness, or Write with Siri. Apple also says some of those features are unavailable in some regions, and usage limits can apply.

Can a Backup From iOS 27 Be Put on iOS 26?

No. Apple will not restore a backup taken on a newer iOS onto an older one, which is why a reversible test required an archived Finder backup made while the phone was still on iOS 26. An iCloud backup captured after the 27 upgrade will only restore onto 27 or later. That archive rule did not change on September 21; the unsign only removed the firmware those older backups could have returned to.
