Honda Bets the 2026 Accord Hybrid on the EX-L

Honda’s 2026 Accord Hybrid sales are up 33.3 percent, yet the EX-L trim, not the Sport, is the one rated at 48 mpg combined.

Honda’s 2026 Accord Hybrid took 129,014 U.S. sales through August, a 33.3 percent jump that still left Toyota’s Camry well ahead at 235,334. The wager underneath those figures is not a canyon surprise. It is a hybrid-majority sedan, four trims deep, whose best EPA number sits on the EX-L’s 17-inch wheels.

Camry remains hybrid-only and cheaper to enter. Honda still sells a 1.5-liter turbo on the two lowest Accords, then asks shoppers to step into the two-motor car for the torque and the mpg. That split is the bet.

Four of Six Accords Are Hybrids Now

Honda builds the 11th-generation Accord in six trims. LX and SE use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four, a CVT, and 17- or 19-inch wheels. Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring share the two-motor hybrid, a 2.0-liter Atkinson four, and a direct-drive unit Honda is careful not to call a conventional CVT.

Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales, has said the current car still lands with Millennial, Gen Z, first-time, and multicultural buyers. Honda also says the 11th-gen car accounts for 25 percent of retail midsize purchases, using Urban Science figures through May 2026, and that more than half of Accord sales over the past three years have been hybrid-electric.

THE HYBRID MIX INSIDE ACCORD

  • Hybrid share: More than 50 percent of Accord sales over the past three years, per Honda.
  • Segment slice: 25 percent of retail midsize-car purchases, Urban Science through May 2026.
  • 2026 volume: 129,014 U.S. sales through August, up 33.3 percent, a gain of 32,264, per Good Car Bad Car tallies.

That mix is why the 1.5-liter car is now the exception. Combined output on the hybrid is 204 horsepower. The electric motor’s 247 lb-ft arrives from 0 to 2,000 rpm, which is the punch people used to hunt in a manual K-series and no longer will, because those gearboxes are gone.

The EX-L’s 17-Inch Wheels Return 48 MPG

Honda’s own 2026 Accord prices and EPA ratings make the efficiency ranking blunt. Only the EX-L hybrid is rated 51 mpg city, 44 highway, and 48 combined. Sport, Sport-L, and Touring sit at 46/41/44. The gap is not a secret motor. It is wheel size.

The EX-L wears 17-by-7.5-inch Pewter Gray alloys and 225/50R17 tires. Sport, Sport-L, and Touring wear 19-by-8.5-inch wheels and 235/40R19 rubber. Keep the 19s if you want the stance. Take the 17s if you want the rating Honda uses in every efficiency boast.

2026 ACCORD TRIM SHEET

Trim Powertrain MSRP EPA city/hwy/comb Wheels
LX 1.5T CVT $28,395 29/37/32 17-in
SE 1.5T CVT $30,695 28/36/31 19-in
Sport Hybrid $33,795 46/41/44 19-in
EX-L Hybrid $35,095 51/44/48 17-in
Sport-L Hybrid $35,495 46/41/44 19-in
Touring Hybrid $39,495 46/41/44 19-in

Destination is $1,195 on every trim, so the Sport lands at $34,990 on the window and the EX-L at $36,290. The EX-L is $1,300 more than Sport before that fee, and it is the only hybrid that posts 48 mpg combined. Touring adds $4,400 over EX-L and gives those miles back to the 19-inch tires.

Camry Still Sells About Two for Every Accord

Toyota’s 2026 Camry is hybrid across the board. The Camry LE starts at $29,600, undercuts Honda’s cheapest hybrid by $4,195, and is rated 52/49 city/highway, or 51 mpg combined, on front-wheel drive. Combined output is 225 horsepower, 21 more than the Accord hybrid. Add Toyota’s rear motor for $1,525 and the figure becomes 232 horsepower with on-demand all-wheel drive, a layout Honda does not offer on Accord.

Through August 2026 the Camry led the midsize class at 235,334 sales, up 11.6 percent. The Accord was second at 129,014. The Kia K5 sat third at 52,611. Camry outsold Accord by 106,320 cars, about 1.8 to one. Accord still added the most units of any nameplate in the group, 32,264 more than at the same point of 2025, when the car finished the full year at 150,196.

Honda left a sub-$30,000 gas sedan on the lot; the LX starts at $28,395 and is rated 32 mpg combined. That price undercuts the Camry LE, and it also undercuts Honda’s own hybrid case. Shoppers who want the 204-horsepower two-motor car pay Sport money. Shoppers who want Camry’s 51 mpg and a lower sticker do not have to talk themselves into 19-inch wheels first.

Torque From Zero Replaced the Old Turbo

The hybrid’s gasoline four makes 146 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 134 lb-ft at 4,500, with a 13.9:1 compression ratio and dual VTC. An AC synchronous motor adds 181 horsepower and that 247 lb-ft from a stop. Honda rates the system at 204 horsepower and runs four drive modes, Econ, Normal, Sport, and Individual. The 1.5-liter turbo, still 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft, is the motor on LX and SE only.

On a week-long drive that mixed city streets with canyon pavement, the hybrid’s low-speed shove was the entertaining part, not a soundtrack. Steering weight was decent, body control stayed flatter than a soft crossover, and the car did not fall apart when the driver leaned on it. Fuel use stayed easy; more than 200 miles left the gauge above half, on a 12.8-gallon hybrid tank versus 14.8 gallons on the gas trims.

Online arguments still treat a 2.0-liter turbo Accord as the car that beats a Camry V6. Honda is not building that sedan for 2026. The replacement is electric torque at the wheels and a direct-drive unit, and the people buying it in volume look more like hybrid families than the old six-speed crowd.

Sisters in Cerritos Took Accords 15 Million and 15,000,001

Honda marked 15 million Accords sold in America on June 29, 2026. The milestone car was a 2026 Sport-L Hybrid bought at Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos, Calif., by Andrea, a 26-year-old insurance agent replacing a 2017 Accord Sport her father had passed down. Her sister Alondra, 24, bought another Sport-L Hybrid the same day and became owner of car 15,000,001.

We’re a Honda family. Our parents have been driving Hondas for as long as I can remember, and now my sister and I do, too.

Andrea, 2026 Accord Sport-L Hybrid buyer, Cerritos, Calif.

Honda, citing Wards Intelligence, calls Accord America’s best-selling passenger car over the past 50 years. The first U.S. Accord arrived in June 1976 as a 68-horsepower CVCC hatchback. Production moved to Marysville, Ohio, on November 1, 1982, the first Japanese-brand vehicle built in America, and Honda says more than 13 million Accords have been assembled in the United States, with Marysville in continuous Accord production for 44 years.

ACCORD’S AMERICAN TIMELINE

  1. June 1976: First Honda Accord goes on sale in the United States as a three-door hatchback.
  2. November 1, 1982: Accord production begins at Marysville, Ohio.
  3. 2005: First hybrid Accord arrives.
  4. June 29, 2026: The 15 millionth U.S. Accord, a Sport-L Hybrid, sells in Cerritos.

Laudermilk thanked those 15 million customers and said Honda would keep building on “the quality, reliability and enduring fun-to-drive spirit of Accord for the next 50 years.” The two cars that hit the round numbers were Sport-L Hybrids, 19-inch cars rated 44 mpg combined, not EX-Ls. Volume followed the blacked-out Sport look Honda pushed for 2026, including black window trim and decklid badges on Sport Hybrid models.

Forward Collision Alerts Hit Empty Lane Changes

Honda Sensing is standard, and Honda says the 2026 Accord has earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK rating. Adaptive cruise with low-speed follow, collision-mitigation braking, lane-keeping assist, road-departure mitigation, blind-spot information, and rear cross-traffic monitor all come on the car. Parking sensors, four front and four rear, are reserved for EX-L and Touring.

The systems are busy. Adaptive cruise, even on its closest gap, hangs far behind traffic. Forward collision warning has fired for empty space and for slower cars already in their own lane during a pass, then tugged the brakes. Combined, those two nags fight the same chassis Honda still wants people to enjoy. Older Honda camera complaints, including class filings on other model years, sit in the background; the 2026 calibration on a clean road is the live problem in the cabin.

Screens are simpler than the assists. Gas LX and SE get a 9-inch center display. Hybrids get a 12.3-inch screen and a 10.2-inch digital cluster. Touring adds a head-up display. Icons are large, menus are short, and the panel is not a luxury-grade panel, just a usable one.

What the 2026 Accord Hybrid Costs

Skip LX and SE if the point of the car is the hybrid. Sport at $33,795 is the cheapest way into 204 horsepower, the 12.3-inch screen, heated front seats, and a power moonroof, with 44 mpg combined on 19-inch wheels. EX-L at $35,095 is the mpg trim, with leather, memory settings, parking sensors, and those 17-inch wheels. Sport-L at $35,495 puts leather-like equipment back on 19s. Touring at $39,495 is the loaded car that still posts 44 mpg combined.

TOURING ADDS ON TOP OF THE HYBRID CORE

  • Climate seats: Heated and ventilated fronts, plus heated rears and a heated steering wheel.
  • Audio and maps: A 12-speaker Bose system and Google built-in with a three-year subscription.
  • Visibility: Head-up display, rain-sensing wipers, and an upgraded rear camera.

The cabin is a sea of black and gray on a lot of cars, including no-cost silver paint that disappears in traffic. Seats are softly padded and firm enough for a long freeway day. Rear adults get 40.8 inches of legroom. Cargo is 16.7 cubic feet with a wide opening. Curb weight runs from 3,477 pounds on Sport to 3,532 on Touring, versus 3,239 on the LX. Ride quality in broken city pavement stays composed without going soft, which is the sedan argument against a two-row crossover that rolls more and drinks more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 2026 Honda Accord Hybrid Take Regular Gas?

Yes. Honda specifies unleaded regular for every 2026 Accord, gas and hybrid, and lists a LEV4 SULEV30 emissions rating. The hybrid does not need premium to make its 204 horsepower or its 48 mpg combined EX-L figure.

What Warranty Comes With a 2026 Accord Hybrid?

Basic coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles, the powertrain is 5 years or 60,000 miles, and the high-voltage system is 8 years or 100,000 miles on dealer spec sheets. Honda also includes a maintenance program for 1 year or 12,000 miles, which is shorter than the powertrain term and should be read as complimentary service, not a long mechanical guarantee.

Does the Accord Hybrid Have a Spare Tire?

No. Honda fits the gas LX and SE with a compact spare and gives hybrid trims a tire-repair kit instead. Ground clearance is 5.3 inches unladen, so a kit is the recovery plan for a puncture, not a donut in the well.

How Much Rear Legroom Does the 2026 Accord Have?

Rear legroom is 42.3 inches in front and 40.8 inches in back on every trim. EPA passenger volume is 105.7 cubic feet on the LX and 102.8 on moonroof cars, including every hybrid. Headroom drops from 39.5/37.3 inches on the LX to 37.5/37.2 once the moonroof is fitted.

Is the 2026 Honda Accord a Hybrid-Only Sedan?

No. Toyota made Camry hybrid-only; Honda did not. LX and SE remain 1.5-liter turbo cars rated 32 and 31 mpg combined. The hybrid starts at Sport, and Honda says those electrified trims have already been more than half of Accord sales for three years.

Andrea’s new car replaced a 2017 Sport her father had handed down, and his first new vehicle in 1997 had been an Accord as well. The 15 millionth car, and the one beside it, were both Sport-L Hybrids. Honda is selling that car. The 48 mpg rating stays on the EX-L.
