50skills Raises $6 Million After Years Without a Raise
Iceland’s 50skills raised $6 million after almost three years without a round, as live people-workflow actions jumped to 6 million in a couple of months.
50skills has raised $6 million to expand an AI people-workflow platform that Icelandic employers already run in production, after usage hit 6 million actions in a couple of months. Frumtak Ventures, Swiss Post Ventures, Avant and US family office DRD Investments co-led the round.
The Reykjavik company last took outside money in May 2022 and, co-founder and CEO Kristjan Freyr Kristjansson said, did not seek another cheque for almost three years because it did not need one. The new funds pay for sales, marketing and community hires, and for more work on the AI agents that sit inside those workflows.
A $6 Million Round After Almost Three Years Without a Raise
Founded in 2017, 50skills began as a no-code onboarding tool for high-turnover employers in retail, hospitality and transport. The product now covers the wider employee lifecycle: onboarding and offboarding, contracts and signatures, requests and approvals, background checks, equipment and system access.
Kristjansson came out of Icelandic fintech firm Meniga, where he could not get separate systems to run a process the same way twice. “There was a need both to design processes and to see how they worked in practice,” he said. He did not set out to build an HR vendor. He set out to make a process visible, then make it run.
THE ROUND IN BRIEF
- New capital: $6 million, co-led by Frumtak Ventures, Swiss Post Ventures, Avant and DRD Investments.
- Last raise: a €2.5 million seed round in 2022, also from Frumtak.
- Headcount: about 20 people in Iceland, Stockholm and the UK, with hiring open in those places and remote.
- Next geographies: the US and Benelux are on the map, but hiring there has not started.
Frumtak, which closed an $87 million fourth fund, first backed the company in 2022 and is doubling down rather than arriving as a new name on the cap table. Ásthildur Otharsdóttir, a Frumtak partner and chair of the 50skills board, said the firm had turned years of customer feedback into software that organisations already run every day.
Usage Hit 6 Million Actions in a Couple of Months
The reason for raising now, Kristjansson said, was a jump in what customers actually run on the platform. In 2025 they automated more than one million actions. In 2026 they have already reached 6 million in a couple of months.
“The company has been performing exceptionally well. Customers are using the platform more and are asking for more as well, and we have been running it efficiently,” he said. That is a volume story, not a launch story. A 20-person company does not print 6 million actions unless the workflows are in daily use.
Iceland’s IT awards panel named 50skills IT Company of the Year 2026, and Kristjansson used the same million-action figure when he thanked the team. The award is local. The usage number is why a Swiss postal CVC and a US family office are now on the round.
PROCESSES ALREADY RUNNING ON THE PLATFORM
- Joiners and leavers: onboarding, offboarding, account provisioning and access.
- Paper and pay: contracts, e-signatures, employee requests and approvals.
- Site work: background checks, equipment, clothing orders and incident reports.
- Hiring adjacent: CV screening, candidate nurture and new-hire requests from managers.
Those are the jobs that still eat HR time in hotels, airlines, security firms and city offices, long after a chatbot has answered a policy question. The platform’s bet is that the work is a process with a start, a handoff and an audit trail, not a prompt.
Airlines, Hotels and Reykjavik Already Run It
The current customer list is not a slide of logos from a pilot programme. 50skills names Icelandair, shipping group Eimskip, Blue Lagoon, Domino’s and Securitas, plus the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the City of Reykjavík. The company also cites Hilton and energy research firm Rystad Energy as it pushes into the Nordics and the UK.
Hotel group Íslandshótel is the clearest public case. It operates 19 hotels under the Hotel Reykjavík and Fosshotel brands, with 2,000+ employees and nearly 2,000 rooms. Before the software, requests vanished between inboxes. Health-grant paperwork took hours. The company’s own case study says the HR team cut admin time by 80%.
50skills is a massive time saver. What used to take me one to two hours per case now takes just 5 to 20 minutes, and in some cases, there’s no manual work at all!
Jóhanna Magnúsdóttir, HR Specialist, Íslandshótel
In the first nine months the hotel group approved 411 requests through the system and collapsed 100-step processes into forms. Transport grants now run with no HR touch. Emeline Cardinet, an HR development specialist there, said staff set up the AI steps themselves, with no ticket to IT, and that those steps now catch errors as well as the boring work.
CUSTOMER RESULTS ON THE PLATFORM
| Employer | Where it runs | What they automated | Published result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Íslandshótel | 19 hotels, 2,000+ staff | Benefits, offboarding, hire requests, clothing, incidents | 80% less admin time; 411 requests in 9 months; 1-2 hours per case down to 5-20 minutes |
| FESTI | Iceland retail group | Employee stock option programme | 200+ hours of manual input avoided |
| GRID | Iceland | Hiring and onboarding | 13 employees hired and onboarded in 4 weeks |
| Wortell | Benelux operations | Recruitment administration | Nearly 40% faster time-to-hire; more than 200 hours a year back to recruiters |
María Kristín Jónsdóttir, solution manager for HR systems at FESTI, said the stock-option flow had been a mess of manual input and is now a single operation. Thorsteinn Yngvi, COO at GRID, said the firm could not have made those 13 hires in 4 weeks without the software. Gunnur Gunnarsdóttir, HR director at grocer Samkaup, recommended it specifically for high-turnover companies. That is the customer the 2022 seed already named: shops, hotels, airlines, security, not a campus full of knowledge workers.
How Navigator Turns a Sentence Into a Workflow
HR teams type what they want in plain language. The company’s Navigator agent turns a process into a live workflow, then extra agents take on steps that need a judgement call, such as screening a CV, flagging a policy or drafting a joining email. People keep the decisions that have to stay human. The builder also still works as drag-and-drop, with conditions, approvals and an audit trail.
A typical onboarding path on the public demo starts when a new hire lands in Teamtailor, then creates the profile, checks ID and right-to-work papers, sends the day-one pack and posts a welcome in Slack. Triggers can come from tools the team already has, including BambooHR, Personio and Slack. 50skills says it connects to 30+ business applications, so the workflow is meant to sit on top of the HRIS rather than replace it.
We are building the operating system for people workflows, where HR teams design the experience they want for their employees and the platform runs it. The hard part is the balance: deterministic workflows where a process has to run the same way every time, probabilistic agents where a step needs interpretation, and human oversight, governance and security throughout. For HR and people operators, that balance is not optional, it is the job.
Kristjan Freyr Kristjansson, co-founder and CEO, 50skills
“What we’re really trying to do is to help the user give some context about their own business and processes so that the agent can assist in building and streamlining those areas,” Kristjansson said, adding that the product uses several AI models rather than a single chatbot. He closed the funding interview on the same point: “AI is here to stay, and people need to use it in the right, responsible way with human oversight.”
That is a less glamorous pitch than an autonomous HR agent that replaces the department. It is also why a ministry and a city can be on the same customer list as a pizza chain. The process has to run the same way on Tuesday, and someone has to be able to see who approved the exception.
Swiss Post Backs the Operator Side of HR
Swiss Post Ventures is the name on the term sheet that does not look like a generic AI cheque. The corporate venture arm of Swiss Post invests at pre-Series A through Series B, with first tickets from $500,000 to $2 million, and looks for companies that fit how the group already works. Swiss Post employs 46,000 staff in 15 countries, 1,200 of them outside Switzerland, across letters, parcels, finance, outsourcing and buses.
Its active people-adjacent bets already include Jobbatical for relocation paperwork, CareerFairy for graduate hiring and, before an exit, Beekeeper for staff who do not sit at desks. A workflow layer for joiners, kit, access and approvals sits next to that stack. Hotels, airlines, security guards and dock workers have the same shape of problem: high churn, many sites, lots of forms, and an HR team that is the glue between systems.
Otharsdóttir’s own board history makes the Icelandic side of that bet less abstract. She sat on the Icelandair Group board from 2012 to 2019. Icelandair is on the 50skills customer list. In a small market the operator, the investor and the reference customer can be one conversation, and that is a feature of the raise, not a footnote.
“As AI changes how work gets done, the companies that win will be those that bring people, workflows and AI agents together safely and effectively,” Otharsdóttir said. “50skills has the product, the domain expertise and the customer traction to lead that shift.”
Twenty People Against Much Larger HR Suites
About 20 staff, split across Reykjavik, Stockholm and the UK, is a thin line against the HR software groups that already own payroll, benefits and the employee log-in. 50skills does not claim to replace those systems. It claims to run the messy processes that still live in inboxes even after a company has bought a full suite.
Snorri Jónsson, HR manager at Domino’s, said onboarding new hires changed once the platform was in. Bára Mjöll Ágústsdóttir, HR director at Samskip, started with onboarding and then pushed the same automation into interviews and new-hire requests. Hildur Gudjonsdottir at Securitas pointed to the onboarding form and the integrations. The pattern is the same: one painful flow first, then the next one, until HR is designing journeys rather than chasing them.
The live sales motion matches that pattern. On 1 October 2026 Kristjansson is due to run a two-hour virtual workshop with Hacking HR, from 8:00 AM Eastern, 1:00 PM BST, in which attendees bring a process that is draining them because they keep chasing people and moving information between systems. Selected flows get built in the product in the session. That is not a launch video. It is the same job the new community and sales hires will do in Stockholm and London.
The New Money Pays for Sales and Agents
Kristjansson said the company is hiring in Stockholm, in Iceland and for remote roles. US and Benelux offices are a stated intent, not an open req list. Wortell’s Benelux team is already on the platform, so the gap is go-to-market capacity, not a blank map.
FROM SEED TO THIS ROUND
- 2017: 50skills is founded in Reykjavik around onboarding for high-turnover employers.
- May 2022: Frumtak leads a €2.5 million seed to take the product into the Nordics and the UK.
- 2025: Customers automate more than one million actions on the platform.
- 2026: 50skills is named IT Company of the Year in Iceland; usage reaches 6 million actions in a couple of months.
- 24 September 2026: The company closes $6 million with Frumtak, Swiss Post Ventures, Avant and DRD Investments.
- 1 October 2026: Kristjansson runs a live workflow-building workshop with HR practitioners.
The $6 million pays for people who will sit with HR teams and build the process that is already draining them, and for the agents that handle the steps those teams should not still be typing. Iceland already ran the experiment. The round is how it leaves the island.
