Ford Bets a Four-Cylinder Mustang RTR Can Fill the Gap

Ford is betting a 315-hp Mustang RTR and its $6,520 drift package can fill the empty sub-$45,000 rear-drive slot the Supra left.

Ford priced the 2026 Mustang RTR at $44,860 including destination, a 315 hp EcoBoost coupe with a $6,520 chassis pack aimed sideways. The car is rear-drive and seats four. It is sold only with a 10-speed automatic.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Ford are pointing that turbo four at buyers who used to cross-shop a Toyota GR Supra, in a band where the Nissan Z still sells a 400 hp coupe with a clutch pedal. A loaded Orange Fury example at the press drive reached $55,850, which is more than a Mustang GT Premium before you add a V8.

A Four-Cylinder Mustang Priced Like a Bargain, Until the Boxes Get Ticked

The RTR is a factory package on the EcoBoost Fastback, not a new engine. Ford lists EcoBoost Premium at $36,345 before the $1,995 destination charge, then adds the $6,520 RTR pack, which is how testers arrived at $44,860 out the door on a Premium car. A GT is $46,800 before destination, or $48,795 once that same fee is on the window sticker, and it still starts with 480 hp and a six-speed manual.

That math is the wager. You spend less than a GT to get Dark Horse suspension parts, GT-spec Brembos, and a lever Ford wants you to yank on a closed course. You also spend it on 315 hp and a gearbox that will not take a clutch. Stack Recaros at $1,995, MagneRide at $1,750, paint, and audio, and the four-cylinder walks past the V8 it was supposed to undercut.

RTR VS GT VS Z, BEFORE DESTINATION

Car Powertrain Output Gearbox Price
Mustang RTR (Premium + pack) 2.3-liter turbo I-4, RWD 315 hp / 350 lb-ft 10-speed auto only $42,865
Mustang GT Fastback 5.0-liter V8, RWD 480 hp 6-speed manual or 10-speed auto $46,800
Nissan Z Sport 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, RWD 400 hp 6-speed manual or 9-speed auto $42,970

A Z Performance jumps to $52,970, which is where a dressed RTR already lives. The Toyota GR Supra 3.0 opened at $58,300, and Magna Steyr ended MkV production in March 2026, so that comparison is now a used-car problem. Ford is selling a four-seat fastback with 13.3 cubic feet of trunk space into the hole the Supra left, and it is asking shoppers to accept fewer cylinders to get there.

Dark Horse Metal Under an EcoBoost Hood

The 2.3-liter twin-scroll four still makes 315 hp at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm. There is no factory power bump in the RTR pack. What you buy is hardware Ford already tooled for the GT and Dark Horse, plus software Gittin’s crew was allowed to touch.

WHAT THE $6,520 PACK BOLTS ON

  • Dark Horse chassis: Rear subframe with stiffer bushings, Handling Pack stabilizer bars, and adjustable strut mounts.
  • GT steering rack: Ford lists 72.5 millimeters of extra steering travel so the front tires can wind in farther in a slide.
  • GT Performance Brembos: 15.3-inch front rotors with six-piston calipers and 14-inch rears with four-piston calipers.
  • Driveline: A 3.55:1 Torsen limited-slip in place of the EcoBoost’s 3.15 axle, plus the Electronic Drift Brake and an active-valve exhaust.
  • Anti-lag: Ford-patented code drawn from the Le Mans Ford GT race car, meant to keep the turbo spooled when you lift.
  • Wheels and rubber: 19×9.5-inch Tarnished Dark wheels with a 30-millimeter offset and 255/40 summer tires.
  • Cooling and looks: The GT’s 600-watt fan, a GT front fascia, RTR lit grille nostrils, and a raised Performance Pack wing.

Ford’s own curb-weight table puts a 3,573-pound EcoBoost automatic fastback next to a 3,766-pound GT automatic. The RTR testers weighed 3,783 pounds, which is 210 pounds over the plain EcoBoost and 17 pounds over that GT. The extra mass is Dark Horse metal hung on a smaller engine, so the weight sits better than a Coyote’s nose, even if the scale is no longer on your side.

Optional MagneRide at $1,750 gets its own RTR calibration. Testers had it on the cars they drove, and it is the one box that actually changes how the chassis breathes on the road. Ford also tuned the anti-lag to stay quiet. A company engineer told first-drive attendees the pops were left out so a factory car stays easy to maintain, which is a long way from a Formula Drift turbo.

Why the Drift Brake Is Not Unique to the RTR

The lever everyone is writing home about is a powder-coated Hyper Lime handle on the console, and it is not a cable-operated parking brake. It is the same Performance Electronic Parking Brake Ford has fitted on seventh-generation Mustangs with the Performance Package since the 2024 model year. Gittin and Chelsea DeNofa helped Ford make it a modulated electronic Drift Brake, so pull distance sets rear pressure instead of slamming an on-off switch.

On a GT with that package, the trick is already in the car. The RTR makes the lever standard on an EcoBoost, paints it Hyper Lime, and pairs it with a looser Track-mode stability map. Until you enable the feature, the handle behaves like a parking brake. Once it is on, the lever springs back when you let go, so you cannot latch it; you modulate it, then drive through with the throttle.

Ford’s own how-to says you activate Drift Brake in Track Apps, which puts the car in Track mode, and that the handle then brakes the rear wheels only. The company marks the function for track use only. Gittin asked Ford a blunter question during development: whether stability control could open up “like training wheels for somebody that’s a novice that just wants to go and learn.” That is the product, a four-cylinder Mustang that will let a beginner break the rear loose without requiring a hydraulic handbrake kit.

The clutch-pedal hole in the wager stays open. EcoBoost Mustangs, RTR included, do not get a manual. A GT still does. If the romance of a lever is the point, Ford will sell you one that talks to a 10-speed automatic and an auxiliary rear caliper, then ask you to practice on a skidpad.

Gittin Finally Got Ford to Build His Mustang on the Line

Gittin founded RTR Vehicles in 2009, at 29, as Ready to Rock, a shop that built Mustangs for people who wanted them sideways. For years the RTR cars were finished after they left Ford. The 2026 pack is assembled at Flat Rock in Michigan, sold through Ford dealers, and covered by Ford’s factory warranty, which is the part Gittin had been chasing for roughly two decades.

When we set out to develop a new kind of performance Mustang in partnership with Vaughn Gittin Jr. and RTR, our mission was simple: produce the most exciting, fun-to-drive turbocharged Mustang ever. We succeeded. This is Formula Drift championship-winning knowhow, Mustang EcoBoost balance and affordability, and the race-proven performance technology from Mustang Dark Horse in a factory-built Mustang, direct from Flat Rock Assembly.

Laurie Transou, Mustang Chief Program Engineer, Ford

RTR’s own announcement calls this only the second time in the Mustang’s 60-plus-year run that Ford has put a third-party name on a factory-built Mustang from Flat Rock. Gittin said he launched the company with “no plan beyond making Mustangs cool and exciting for the next generation,” and that this car is that plan with a warranty card in the glovebox. Software access mattered more than stickers. Ford let RTR retune Track-mode stability control and MagneRide; the rest is a parts-bin mix of Dark Horse and GT hardware.

HOW THE FACTORY RTR GOT HERE

  1. 2009: Gittin, then 29, launches RTR Vehicles as Ready to Rock.
  2. October 15, 2025: Ford and RTR announce the first factory Mustang RTR, Fastback only, on EcoBoost High and EcoBoost Premium.
  3. Summer 2026: Dealer deliveries are slated to begin.
  4. August 2026: Production is underway at Flat Rock; Gittin watches cars roll off the line.
  5. October 1, 2026: Press first drives go out after lapping and skidpad sessions.

The aftermarket RTR catalog still exists for GT owners who want a shop-built car. This one is the Ford-warranty version, with a serialized dash plaque and lit sill plates, aimed at a younger buyer Ford thinks will not automatically write a check for a Coyote.

Thirty Minutes on a Skidpad With Gittin

Ford’s first-drive program put the RTR on Thunderhill’s West circuit and on a skidpad, with Gittin running the sideways session himself. In ordinary modes the car can pass for a base EcoBoost aside from Hyper Lime belts and stitching. Sport firms the MagneRide cars without turning the ride into a punishment, which is the Mustang chassis at its most usable on a road.

The exhaust is less of a gift. Testers found that turning the aggression up made the active valves louder without making them sound like much, a four-cylinder doing theater. Anti-lag helps the turbo stay awake between throttle stabs, and because Ford refused the pops, you feel the response more than you hear a show.

On the road course the extra steering angle and the lighter nose make turn-in crisp, and the car likes to rotate. That same trait gets messy under hard downhill braking, when the rear steps out if you are still on the pedal. Open lapping is a poor place to hold a drift in a 3,783-pound coupe; the skidpad is where the pack makes its case.

Until Track mode is on and the drift toggle is enabled, the lever does nothing useful for slides. Once it is live, the action is analog enough that a parking-lot handbrake habit transfers. Pull, add lock, feed throttle. Too much right foot overpowers the brake, the same way a hydraulic lever loses a fight with a planted throttle. Gittin split the pad into J-turns and pirouettes, then transitions, and after about 30 minutes the car had done the job it was tuned for: let a non-drifter keep a slide alive without a dedicated cage and a welded pump handle.

Ford Is Hunting a Vacant Sports-Car Price Band

The field under $45,000 for a high-output rear-drive coupe has thinned to almost nothing that is not a Mustang or a Z. A Nissan Z Sport starts at $42,970 with 400 hp and a six-speed, two seats, and a trunk that is not a Mustang’s 13.3 cubes. A Z Performance at $52,970 is in loaded-RTR money with more engine and still a clutch if you tick it. The GR Supra is out of production as of March 2026.

Hatchbacks and lower-power sports cars fill the rest of the aisle. Ford’s bet is that four seats, a dealer network, and a factory drift lever matter more than a second turbocharger and a third pedal. The objection writes itself: 315 hp does not make a muscle car, and a four-cylinder window sticker of $55,850 is a GT with worse theater. That complaint is fair on a spec sheet. It is also aimed at a car Ford did not try to make into a Coyote.

What Ford actually built is a parts-bin EcoBoost with Dark Horse stiffness, GT brakes, training-wheels stability control, and a lever that already existed on Performance Pack cars. Consumables should be cheaper than a V8’s if you actually take it to a track, which is the old EcoBoost High Performance Package argument in a louder wrapper. The bigger wheels and tires are a poor match for drag racing, and nobody involved is pretending otherwise.

Dealers have had the cars since summer 2026. The press finally got its skidpad day on Oct. 1, 2026, and the wager is now on a lot, in Hyper Lime stitch, with a 10-speed and a handle you still have to switch on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does the 2026 Ford Mustang RTR Cost?

Add MagneRide’s $1,750 to the $44,860 Premium car and the functional chassis total is $46,610 before paint, Recaros, or audio. Ford’s bumper-to-bumper warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles and the powertrain term is 5 years or 60,000 miles, and those terms apply because the pack is built at Flat Rock rather than at RTR’s shop.

Does the Mustang RTR Come With a Manual Transmission?

No. Ford’s 2026 spec sheet lists the Getrag six-speed as not available behind the 2.3-liter EcoBoost, while a GT still gets that six-speed as standard and a Dark Horse can be ordered with a TREMEC TR-3160. The RTR’s lever is not a substitute for a clutch pedal; it talks to an auxiliary rear caliper.

What Engine Does the 2026 Mustang RTR Use?

The 2.3-liter turbo four displaces 137.5 cubic inches with a 10.6:1 compression ratio. Ford allows 87-octane fuel as a minimum and recommends 91-octane or higher for the advertised 315 hp, and the tank holds 16 gallons. Anti-lag does not raise peak power; it keeps the turbo ready after a lift.

How Do You Turn On the Mustang Drift Brake?

Press the pony button or open Features, then MyMustang, then Track Apps, then Drift Brake, which forces Track mode. If you switch Drift Brake off, Track mode stays on. Ford says the feature is for track use only, should not be used on public roads, and can affect warranty coverage if you ignore that limit.

Is the Mustang RTR a Separate Model?

It is a factory package on EcoBoost Fastback cars with the High pack or EcoBoost Premium, not a convertible and not a GT. A serialized dash plaque and lit RTR sill plates are standard, Hyper Lime calipers and the Hyper Lime Appearance Package are extra, and a no-cost black interior with metal gray stitch is offered if you want less lime.

The $55,850 Orange Fury four-cylinder will sit on some lots a few spaces from a GT that is $48,795 with destination and 480 hp. Ford is taking that trade anyway, with Gittin’s plaque on the dash and a Hyper Lime lever that still needs Track Apps before it will lock a rear tire.

His habit is to open the document before the summary of it. A company result is read from the filing rather than the press release, a court or regulatory decision from the judgment itself, a scientific finding from the paper and its methods section rather than the headline claim, and a sporting sanction from the governing body's own ruling. That approach shapes coverage across news, business and technology as much as science, sports and entertainment, and it carries into the lifestyle, travel, auto and gaming pages, where product specifications are checked against the manufacturer's sheet and, where possible, against Harry's own testing.
