Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Lose Patches Before Windows 10 Does
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro lose updates on October 13, while 25H2 is a one-restart switch and Windows 10 patches run to 2027.
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro stop receiving monthly security updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft named that date in a 30-day reminder for consumer editions, alongside Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016.
Unmanaged PCs will be offered Windows 11 25H2, a one-restart switch that turns on code already sitting in 24H2. Enrolled Windows 10 PCs still get security fixes until October 12, 2027.
A 30-Day Reminder for Home and Pro
Microsoft’s Windows message center carried the 30-day reminder posted on September 14. The note groups Home and Pro of version 24H2 with a 10-year-old Long-Term Servicing Branch release, then points consumers at 25H2.
On October 13, 2026, Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 will reach end of updates. After this date, devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats.

The same note says Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 remain supported until October 12, 2027. That is the standard split in Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ: 24 months of updates for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations, and 36 months for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session.
The PC does not shut down on that Tuesday. Apps keep opening. What stops is the monthly stream that closes newly found holes.
25H2 Turns On Code Already on the Disk
Windows 11 25H2, the 2025 Update, reached general availability on September 30, 2025. On a current 24H2 machine it is not a new operating system. Microsoft’s support note for KB5054156 says versions 24H2 and 25H2 share a common core with an identical set of system files, and that 25H2 features already ride along in the latest 24H2 monthly quality update in a dormant state.
The enablement package that needs one restart is the master switch. After that reboot, Windows Update reports version 25H2, the OS build moves from 26100 to 26200, and the consumer support clock resets to October 12, 2027. The monthly security package stays on the same servicing branch.
A PC must already be on 24H2, with the August 29, 2025 preview KB5064081 (OS build 26100.5074) or a later cumulative update, before that small package will apply. Anyone still on 23H2 or Windows 10 cannot use the switch. Those machines need a full feature update.
Windows 11, version 26H1, which shipped for new hardware on February 10, 2026 as OS build 28000, is not the path either. Microsoft says 26H1 is scoped to new devices from early 2026 and is not offered as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2.
The switch is not empty. Microsoft says WMIC is removed in the 25H2 upgrade. New 24H2 installs already omit the old command-line tool by default. WMI itself stays. Scripts that still call wmic.exe break when the version number flips, which is the change administrators have to test before they bless the package.
A Year of Extra Windows 10 Security Updates
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft then sold, and in several markets gave away, a consumer Extended Security Updates program for personal PCs still on version 22H2.
In June 2026 the company updated that program’s end date. The current consumer page says you can enroll in consumer Extended Security Updates through 2027, with coverage through October 12, 2027. People already enrolled stay covered through that date without another step.
HOW CONSUMERS CAN ENROLL IN WINDOWS 10 ESU
- Settings backup: Syncing PC settings to a Microsoft account enrolls the device at no extra charge.
- Rewards points: Redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points unlocks the same coverage.
- One-time fee: A purchase of $30 USD, or the local equivalent plus tax, covers the program on that account.
One license can cover up to 10 devices signed in with the same Microsoft account. The offer is for personal use on Home, Professional, Pro Education, or Workstations editions of Windows 10 22H2. Domain-joined PCs, Entra-joined PCs, and devices under mobile device management are out. Entra-registered devices can still use the consumer program.
ESU is security only. It does not add features, quality fixes, or phone support. Even so, an enrolled Windows 10 box will still be in that security program on the morning after 24H2 Home and Pro go dark.
What Happens If a PC Stays on 24H2?
Microsoft says Home and Pro PCs that IT does not manage will get 25H2 automatically. The remaining choice is when to restart, or whether to postpone. Home cannot defer feature updates under the lifecycle FAQ, so those PCs usually take the next version before the servicing date on the chart.
The machines that actually miss patches are the ones frozen on purpose: Pro boxes with updates paused, offline laptops, and anything still hiding from Windows Update after 23H2 Home and Pro already lost support on November 11, 2025. Windows 11 SE is in a tighter spot, because Microsoft lists 24H2 as that edition’s last supported version.
THE OCTOBER SERVICING SPLIT
| Release | Editions | End of updates | Supported next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations | October 13, 2026 | 25H2 enablement package |
| Windows 11 24H2 | Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise | October 12, 2027 | Stay on 24H2 or move to 25H2 |
| Windows 11 25H2 | Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations | October 12, 2027 | Remain on 25H2 |
| Windows 11 23H2 | Home, Pro | November 11, 2025 | Already out of updates |
| Windows 11 23H2 | Enterprise, Education | November 10, 2026 | 25H2 |
| Windows 10 22H2 with consumer ESU | Home, Pro, Pro Education, Workstations | October 12, 2027 | Stay enrolled, then Windows 11 if eligible |
| Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 | LTSB | October 13, 2026 | Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, or organizational ESU |
Those official end-of-updates dates for 24H2 are why a shop can keep a managed Enterprise fleet on 24H2 through the next school year, while a home Pro tower that blocks the enablement package runs out of monthly fixes this October.
September’s Emergency Fix Covered Both Versions
The shared branch showed its teeth in September. Microsoft released security update KB5124008 on September 8, 2026, taking 24H2 to build 26100.9445 and 25H2 to 26200.9445. The company then posted an out-of-band follow-up on September 14 after that package caused trouble on both versions.
WHAT THE SEPTEMBER 14 NOTE SAYS IT FIXED
- Remote Desktop: Remote Desktop Services could stop responding, blocking new sessions and some sign-ins.
- Hyper-V shares: Host folder shares could vanish inside Hyper-V-based Linux virtual machines.
- USB audio: Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices could fail in multichannel modes.
That follow-up is KB5129195. It lands as OS builds 26100.9457 and 26200.9457, the same revision on 24H2 and 25H2, and Microsoft classed it as a security update for those versions. Flipping the 25H2 switch does not step off that monthly train. It changes the version string and the support end date.
Microsoft’s note does not list AMD driver timeouts or File History failures among the repaired items, and those complaints have kept appearing on the same two builds. Treating a messy Patch Tuesday as a reason to freeze 24H2 is the choice that runs out of cover on October 13 for Home and Pro.
Enterprise 24H2 Holds Until October 12, 2027
IT departments that pin 24H2 on purpose still have a year. Education labs, factory floors, and other managed rings can keep testing 25H2 while the 36-month clock runs. The October 13 reminder is aimed at the consumer SKUs, plus one old LTSB release that Microsoft now wants on Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024.
The same Tuesday also ends mainstream support for Windows Server 2022. The October 2026 security update is the last mainstream package for that server release. Extended support then continues, with monthly security updates through October 14, 2031, at no extra license fee under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
THE SAME-TUESDAY CALENDAR
- October 1, 2024: Windows 11 24H2 reaches general availability as OS build 26100.
- September 30, 2025: Windows 11 25H2 reaches general availability as OS build 26200.
- November 11, 2025: Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 23H2 reach end of updates.
- September 14, 2026: Microsoft posts the 30-day 24H2 reminder and ships out-of-band update KB5129195.
- October 13, 2026: 24H2 Home and Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, and Windows Server 2022 mainstream support all hit their dates.
- October 12, 2027: 24H2 Enterprise and Education, 25H2 Home and Pro, and Windows 10 consumer ESU reach their listed ends.
That calendar is why a Windows 10 holdout with ESU enrolled, and a school’s 24H2 Enterprise lab, share a later finish line than a Home laptop that refuses 25H2.
How to Check for the 25H2 Update
On an eligible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, open Settings, then Windows Update, then Check for updates. When the device is ready, Windows Update offers Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2. Microsoft also says you can pick the restart time or postpone.
BEFORE YOU TAKE THE SWITCH
- Confirm the version: Press Win+R, type winver, and read the edition and version so you know whether you are on 24H2, 25H2, or something older.
- Install the latest monthly: A 24H2 PC needs a cumulative update at least as new as KB5064081 before the enablement package will apply.
- Watch for WMIC: Replace remaining wmic.exe calls with PowerShell CIM or WMI cmdlets, because the upgrade strips the old tool.
- Do not confuse 26H1: That build is for certain new devices. Existing 24H2 PCs are directed at 25H2, not 26H1.
If Windows Update never offers 25H2, the PC may be managed by a work policy, or it may still be on a release that needs a full feature update rather than the small package. In a managed fleet, 24H2 Enterprise can wait until October 12, 2027. On an unmanaged Home or Pro box, the automatic offer is the support path Microsoft has already scheduled, and the restart dialog is the last decision the owner still owns.
