Suriya and Jyotika Restage Their 2006 Wedding in Scotland
Suriya and Jyotika renewed vows at Blairquhan Castle 20 years after a Tamil Chennai wedding, naming the Scotland church ceremony The Sequel.
Suriya and Jyotika renewed their wedding vows at Blairquhan Castle in Scotland on 11 September 2026, 20 years after a Tamil ceremony in Chennai. They named the church-style restaging The Sequel, then let family put the album online.
His sister, playback singer Brindha Sivakumar, posted rare pictures on 17 September and called the weekend a blissful experience. The date matched their first wedding. The rite did not.
The Sequel Arrives 20 Years After the First Cut
Jyotika put a video of the vow renewal on Instagram on 15 September, in a joint post with Suriya. She wore a white strapless gown. He wore a white tuxedo. Their children, Diya and Dev, walked them toward the vows, with Dev beside his mother and Diya beside her father.
Suriya welled up when he saw her in the dress, a detail fans clipped and replayed. Actor Karthi, his brother, was with him in the church frames. Close friends threw petals as the pair came out.
THE SEQUEL. A vow renewal, celebrating our 20 years of love and war. And no, this is not a celebration of a perfect marriage. This is a celebration of imperfections, of adjustments, of understanding, sacrifices, of loving each other selflessly. This is a celebration of us. The people we have become for each other. How ironical. A dream which felt far from reality, is now a reality I will spend my entire lifetime dreaming of!

She added personal vows in the same note, promising to stay “that imperfect wife, who fights, and then makes up, only to grow a little more closer to you each time,” and closed on “the imperfect us, with the perfect understanding.” Actor R Madhavan wrote under the post that they were an example, and wished them “multiple decades of happy togetherness.”
Jyotika later said New York-based Tartan Weddings planned the weekend in three months. “Three months of work, poured in with so much heart,” she wrote, thanking everyone who made it possible. The firm’s own American-Scottish castle wedding guide is built for couples who book a historic pile from overseas, which is what this was: a second wedding staged far from Chennai’s cameras.
Park Sheraton at 7 a.m. in 2006
The first wedding started at 7 a.m. on 11 September 2006 in the Maubari Hall at the Park Sheraton Hotel, Adyar. Suriya tied the thali around Jyotika’s neck in a Tamil ceremony. He wore a white silk shirt and dhoti. She wore a pink silk sari that contemporaneous accounts priced at Rs 3 lakh.
His father, actor Sivakumar, took the thali from the priest, sought the blessing of then chief minister M. Karunanidhi, and passed it to his son. The couple touched Karunanidhi’s feet. About an hour after that muhurat, J. Jayalalithaa arrived at the reception, blessed them, and gave a kuthuvilakku. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were among the film guests. Security ringed the hotel. Only people with invitations got in.
Sivakumar had not wanted the match at first. In a later Galatta interview he said he refused the love until Suriya told the family he would marry her or stay single for life. “Then I thought about how, over the course of my career, I acted in around 150 films, and most of them were around the idea of love marriages. So I finally agreed,” he said. On 5 August 2006 he announced the wedding and ended the gossip cycle.
THE ROAD TO THE FIRST WEDDING
- 1999: Suriya and Jyotika meet on Vasanth’s Poovellam Kettuppar, her early Tamil work after growing up in Mumbai.
- 2003: Friendship turns to love on Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Kaakha Kaakha, a film she had pushed him toward after Nandha.
- 5 August 2006: Sivakumar announces the marriage, about five weeks before the muhurat.
- 8 September 2006: Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, their last film as a pair, opens three days before they wed. They play a married couple on screen.
- 11 September 2006: Tamil wedding at Park Sheraton, Adyar, with a political guest list that ran from Karunanidhi to Jayalalithaa.
- 2015: Jyotika returns to acting with 36 Vayadhinile, nine years after she stepped back for family life.
- 11 September 2026: Vow renewal at Blairquhan Castle, Scotland, with Diya and Dev on the aisle.
That first day was public in the Kollywood way: two chief ministers, a hotel cordon, and a film in theatres. The sequel was built to feel like the opposite.
What Blairquhan Castle Charges for Exclusive Use
Blairquhan is a Grade A listed Regency castle on a 200-acre private estate at Maybole in Ayrshire, with 15 castle bedrooms and eight cottages on the estate. Couples get the house to themselves. Ceremonies sit in a saloon that seats up to 70 guests on the ground floor and 20 more on the balcony, or on the lawn with the facade behind them.
The castle’s 2026 standard list puts exclusive use at £12,350, then adds catering at £150 a head. That comes to £21,350 for 60 guests including VAT, about Rs 27.4 lakh, or £24,350 for 80 guests. Those published totals are the venue’s starting packages, not a receipt for this family, and they exclude most bedroom bills.
BLAIRQUHAN 2026 PUBLISHED PACKAGES
| Package | Guests | Exclusive use | Catering | Total incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 60 | £12,350 | £9,000 | £21,350 |
| Standard | 80 | £12,350 | £12,000 | £24,350 |
| Intimate | 30 | £16,060 | £4,500 | £20,560 |
| Intimate | 50 | £16,060 | £7,500 | £23,560 |
Castle rooms on the wedding rate start at £265 bed and breakfast. Hire the whole house on a night either side and the extra exclusive-use fee is £6,500. The intimate package folds all 15 bedrooms into the exclusive-use fee; the standard package does not. Drinks after vows are meant for the dining room or the flower garden. Dinner is meant for the drawing rooms, which take up to 100 for the meal.
None of that tells you what Suriya and Jyotika paid. It tells you why a Scottish castle weekend is a different object from a 7 a.m. hotel muhurat in Adyar. Privacy is the product, and it is priced.
Brindha Turns a Private Weekend Into a Public Wish
Brindha waited until 17 September to post. The pictures show Suriya and Jyotika with Diya and Dev, Karthi and Ranjani Chinnaswamy, Brindha and her husband, and the wider circle that made the trip. She thanked Jyotika, whom she calls Anni, for the work that went into the experience.
Yes it was Blissful Experience to witness The Sequel! 20th Anniversary Celebrations! Meticulously planned! Thanks to All the Loved ones who put in All the Effort along with Anni for us to Enjoy the Experience! May God Bless You Two Anna and Anni Abundantly to Inspire the Generations to come, to Believe in Marriage and the Strong Love Bond beyond all Odds.

That last sentence is the family putting a moral on the trip. The couple had already said the marriage was imperfect. The sister turned the same weekend into a public argument that marriage still holds. In an industry that watches star weddings the way it watches first-day collections, a sibling album does more work than a press note.
Brindha rarely offers this kind of family reel. She debuted as a singer on Mr Chandramouli and has mostly kept the Sivakumar household off her grid. The Sequel gave her a reason to break that habit, and she used it to bless the match her father once delayed.
Seven Years on Sets Before the Thali
They did not arrive at Park Sheraton as strangers who fell in love off camera. They arrived as a pair whose courtship had already been shot, scored, and released.
FILMS THEY MADE TOGETHER
- Poovellam Kettuppar, 1999: First meeting. Jyotika was still learning Tamil; Suriya was still climbing.
- Uyirile Kalanthathu: An early reunion before the film that changed both careers.
- Kaakha Kaakha, 2003: The cop thriller where, both have said, friendship became love. She had recommended him to Gautham Menon.
- Perazhagan and Maayavi: More shared screens while the relationship stayed partly private.
- Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, 8 September 2006: Their last film as co-stars, in theatres three days before the real wedding, with them playing husband and wife.
Jyotika has said the respect on those sets is why she wanted to marry him. “He spoke to me very casually. That appealed to me a lot,” she said in an earlier Galatta interview. She also said he played romantic scenes only as far as the director asked, and did not take advantage. That is a working actor’s test, not a fan-page myth, and it sits under the 20-year mark more honestly than a castle backdrop.
Language and family sat in the way. She came from Mumbai. He is Sivakumar’s son. The father gave in. They married, had Diya the same year and Dev in 2010, and she left the screen until 2015. The Scotland aisle, with those two children leading them, is the family the 2006 wedding was supposed to make, walking back through a different door.
A White Gown Ceremony That Some Read as Conversion
The 2026 rite was a Christian-style church ceremony: white gown, tuxedo, aisle, spoken vows. The 2006 rite was a Tamil Hindu wedding: thali, vedic hymns, a pink sari, a hotel hall at dawn. That contrast is the sequel. It is also the fight.
Under the fan video of Suriya crying in the church, viewers asked when the couple converted, and why a star weekend had gone to a foreign castle instead of a hospital. Political accounts piled on with mockery of the film title they chose. The questions treat a styled vow renewal as a religious fact. The 2006 record does not.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The first wedding: A Tamil traditional ceremony at Park Sheraton on 11 September 2006, with a mangalsutra and political guests from both main Dravidian parties.
- The sequel: A Christian-style vow renewal at Blairquhan Castle on 11 September 2026, planned in three months, then a yacht party for the same circle.
- The naming: Jyotika called it The Sequel and “20 years of love and war,” not a conversion, and Brindha repeated the sequel line.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Any change of faith: No statement from Suriya, Jyotika, or the family says either of them converted for the Scotland ceremony.
- What they paid: Castle packages start in the low £20,000s before rooms, extras, travel, and the yacht; the family has not released a bill.
- Who officiated: Public posts show a church setting and family on the aisle, not a named priest, pastor, or registrar.
A white gown in a Scottish saloon is a design choice a New York castle planner knows how to sell. It is not proof of baptism. The sharper point is older: the same marriage that needed a father’s surrender and a thali in Adyar can now be restaged, on purpose, as a Western church scene without the couple treating that as a betrayal of the first day.
On the Yacht, a Second Look and a Sundowner
After the church they changed clothes and took the party onto a yacht. Jyotika posted those frames on 16 September with a short line, “Just sharing some moments from our special day with family and friends.” In the yacht pictures she wears a lavender off-shoulder gown; he wears a dark plum velvet suit. The children are there again. So is Karthi.
That is the private version of the weekend the 2006 hotel could not offer: no chief ministers, no invitation police, no dawn muhurat. The public version still arrived, because Jyotika posted the church video, then the yacht stills, and Brindha followed with the group album and a blessing aimed at “generations to come.”
They have now had two weddings on the same date, 20 years apart, in two rites, in two countries, with the second one named like a film. The children who did not exist in Maubari Hall walked them down the aisle for the sequel. Brindha’s note asked people to believe in marriage. The couple’s own caption only asked people to believe in the imperfect one they actually have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who Planned the Scotland Vow Renewal?
Jyotika credited New York-based Tartan Weddings, which she said planned the event in three months. The firm was founded in 2018 by Lisa Bauer, a Scotland-born planner working from New York, and presents itself as a specialist in historic castle weddings for couples booking from abroad.
When Did Sillunu Oru Kaadhal Reach Theatres?
The film opened on 8 September 2006, three days before the Chennai wedding, on 207 screens worldwide. Suriya and Jyotika play a married couple in it, and it remains their last release as co-stars.
Did the Couple Convert for the Church Ceremony?
They have issued no statement of conversion. The 2006 wedding followed Tamil Hindu rites, and Jyotika’s sisters Nagma and Roshni walked her to the Park Sheraton stage that morning. The 2026 event was a styled Christian vow renewal for an anniversary, not a documented change of faith.
What Does an Intimate Blairquhan Package Include?
The castle’s 2026 intimate package, for 30 to 50 guests, prices exclusive use at £16,060 and folds all 15 castle bedrooms, including the honeymoon suite, into that fee for the wedding night. Standard packages keep exclusive use at £12,350 and charge rooms separately from £265 bed and breakfast.
