Scotland Fills the Autumn Hole in a 15-Round WRC

Rally Scotland is round 12 of a 15-event 2027 WRC, filling the autumn gravel gap after Italy moved to Rome and Portugal dropped out.

The FIA has put Rally Scotland on 30 September to 3 October 2027 as round 12 of a 15-event World Rally Championship, based in Aberdeen on forest gravel. It is the first UK round since Wales Rally GB in 2019, and it lands in the first season of cheaper WRC27 cars under new commercial owners.

The patriotic wrapping is Elfyn Evans, who became Britain’s first world rally champion in 25 years on 4 October in Sardinia. The calendar job is colder. Italy has left its September gravel island for July tarmac around Rome, and the championship still could not keep Rally de Portugal on a map that grew to 15 rounds for the first time since 2008.

The Autumn Gravel Hole Scotland Just Filled

The 15-round 2027 calendar the FIA approved on 8 October 2026, after a World Motor Sport Council vote, does not hide the shape of the year. Five tarmac or mixed events sit in the first half. Then the series runs seven gravel rallies on the trot, from Estonia in late July through Saudi Arabia on 25-28 November.

Rally d’Italia used to be the European gravel date in that autumn window, on the roads of Sardinia. In 2027 it moves to 8-11 July, steps up from the European Rally Championship, and switches to asphalt stages in Lazio with a Rome setting. Rally US, a gravel event, then takes 26-29 August. After that the championship has to come back across the Atlantic before Paraguay on 21-24 October.

Scotland sits in the gap. Round 12 is a European forest rally in early autumn, close enough to the US round for freight, early enough to hand the circus to South America. Éric Boullier, the new WRC Promoter chief executive, called the whole list a way to build a stronger and more global championship. The Scottish date is how that list still keeps a classic European gravel weekend after Italy changed surface and season.

Portugal Is Out and Italy Moves to Rome

Growing the championship did not save every legacy round. Japan moves forward to 3-6 June once Portugal is gone. Sardinia’s gravel identity goes with the Rome switch. Saudi Arabia, pulled from the end of 2026 because of conflict in the Middle East, is back as the finale.

WHAT CHANGES ON THE 2027 MAP

  • New gravel in Scotland: Rally Scotland, 30 September-3 October, round 12, based in Aberdeen.
  • United States back: Rally US, 26-29 August, the first points-paying US round since the Olympus Rally in 1988, 39 years later, after a candidate event in June 2026.
  • Italy on tarmac: Rally d’Italia, 8-11 July, Rome and Lazio asphalt, no longer Sardinia gravel.
  • Portugal missing: Rally de Portugal is off the 2027 list, with organisers in talks on a 2028 return.
  • Fifteen events: the first 15-round WRC season since 2008, across five continents.

Safari Rally Kenya stays on 18-21 March. That matters because a lot of the early noise around Scotland’s three-year deal, signed in March 2026, treated the British round as a threat to Africa. The published list kept Kenya and cut a western European classic instead. Marshals in the UK are already volunteering for the forests. The hangover for older fans is simpler: they will not get Portugal in 2027, and they will not get Sardinia’s gravel either.

Aberdeen Voted Through a Smaller Cheque

Motorsport UK, the FIA member club, built the bid around the north-east after failed attempts to keep the championship in Wales and to plant it in Northern Ireland. The Scottish Government, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council put public weight behind a three-year contract with WRC Promoter GmbH for 2027, 2028 and 2029. EventScotland sat in the partnership. Moray is on the stage map with Aberdeenshire.

The money was not waved through. At a full Aberdeenshire Council meeting on 20 November 2025, members were asked for £1 million a year. They refused that figure. After a debate on stretched public services, they backed a reduced contribution after a 39-19 vote, drawn from the Grampian Venture Capital Fund and sponsorship rather than core budgets, and they asked the Scottish Government to close the remaining gap. Co-leader Anne Stirling told the chamber the event was about ambition and legacy, “but not at any cost.”

Co-leader Stewart Adams said the championship is watched by over 1.3 billion people. Aberdeen City Council has projected an economic return of up to £80 million for the north-east over the three years. Those are host-city numbers, not audited accounts, and they are why a gravel rally is being treated as tourism infrastructure as much as motorsport.

Stephen Flynn, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, tied the rally to a crowded events diary that already includes the Tour de France Grand Départ and The Open in 2027. “This event will showcase to a global audience what Scotland has to offer and will attract thousands of visitors, teams, and fans from around the world,” he said.

When Rally Scotland Runs, and From Which Car Park

The championship window is 30 September to 3 October. The week is longer. Motorsport UK says recce opens in Aberdeen on 28 September, so crews spend two days driving the route at controlled speed to write pace notes. Shakedown is on Thursday 30 September. The first competitive stages start that Thursday evening, then Friday through Sunday, six days in all from arrival to the finish on 3 October.

Aberdeen City Council has also described a three-day forest rally from 1 to 3 October. That is the Friday-to-Sunday stage block, not a rival date sheet. The FIA calendar, and the points, still open on 30 September.

THE WEEK IN ABERDEEN

  1. 28-29 September 2027: Recce at controlled speed across the north-east forests.
  2. 30 September 2027: Full-pace shakedown, then the first competitive stages in the evening.
  3. 1-2 October 2027: Daytime gravel legs on closed forest roads in Aberdeenshire and Moray.
  4. 3 October 2027: Final Sunday stages and the finish of round 12.

Rally HQ and the service park sit at The Event Complex Aberdeen, the arena also known as P&J Live. Cars will be serviced indoors. The stages themselves are closed forest gravel, many of them already known to British national crews. Motorsport UK has also flagged a three-year UK broadcast deal covering every championship round, with extra live coverage of the home event. The FIA’s notes on the calendar say candidate events were already held in the United Kingdom, the United States and Rome before the three new or recast rounds were signed off.

Seven Years Off the Map After Wales

Britain was a fixture from the first WRC season in 1973 through Wales Rally GB in 2019. The 2020 event died with the pandemic. Welsh public money, which had underwritten the round for years, did not come back at the old level. A Northern Ireland project then failed to land government funding for 2021, and again in later bids, including a push that needed about £2 million to underwrite a 2024 revival that never started.

David Richards, working the British return as Motorsport UK’s chair, later said the club tried to keep Wales alive, then spent abortive years on Northern Ireland, while Scottish local and national government stayed “exceptional in their enthusiasm.” North-east Scotland offered gravel forests, an international airport, hotel beds and a new arena. It also offered a cheque the other bids could not match in time.

That is why the homecoming is in Aberdeenshire rather than mid-Wales or County Down. UK fans talking about the date keep reaching for Rally GB: the hope is forest spectator banks, dirty cars, and a national round that feels like the old autumn date, even if the title on the door is new. The sporting test is whether those roads, in early October weather, are still a world-championship stage, not a nostalgia act.

New Owners Want the UK and the United States

The calendar is the first full year under new commercial control. On 31 July 2026 the FIA confirmed the Cosmobilis and Park Square Capital takeover of WRC Promoter GmbH, in a long-term rights deal Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, called the deal of the century for rallying. Cosmobilis is a French automotive technology group. Park Square Capital is a private credit investor that says it manages more than $22 billion. Boullier, a former Formula One team boss at Lotus and McLaren, is chief executive. Malcolm Wilson, the FIA deputy president for sport and the man behind M-Sport, helped land the agreement.

The new owners wanted bigger markets. The United States and United Kingdom return is the proof, with Rome as the European showpiece. WRC Promoter’s own calendar note frames Rally US as a door to manufacturers, broadcasters and a country the series has not scored points in since 1988. Scotland is the other English-speaking forest round, with a paid-for three-year stay and a British champion already in the shop window.

Ben Sulayem said the 2027 list puts new events in countries with rally heritage and gives the championship a US growth chance as WRC27 rules arrive. Julien Vial, the promoter’s chief operating officer, said the job now is to raise the standard of the events themselves.

Returning to the United States and United Kingdom, alongside bringing the WRC to an iconic destination such as Rome, creates tremendous opportunities for our manufacturers, commercial partners and fans.

Croatia, the Canary Islands and Japan form three tarmac weekends in a row. Estonia and Finland stay back to back in midsummer. Chile is 4-7 November, three weeks after Paraguay, not the overlapping October weekend that appeared on one early list.

A Home Round for the New British Champion

Evans and co-driver Scott Martin wrapped the 2026 title on 4 October at Rally Italia Sardegna, in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, after Oliver Solberg went off two corners from the end of the Power Stage. Evans finished the year on 243 points. Solberg, who still won the rally, ended on 238. Sami Pajari was third on 237. It was Evans’s first title after five seasons as runner-up. He is the third British champion after Colin McRae in 1995 and Richard Burns in 2001. “I was sure it was over,” Evans said. “I feel for Oliver. He had an incredible weekend.”

Hugh Chambers, Motorsport UK’s chief executive, went straight to that result when the Scottish dates landed four days later.

Elfyn Evans becoming Britain’s first WRC Drivers’ World Champion in 25 years gives the championship’s return to the UK even greater significance, and gives fans another reason to look forward to Rally Scotland in 2027.

The cars those fans will see are not the Rally1 generation Evans has just won with. WRC27 rules cap a ready-to-compete tarmac car at €345,000 and open the top class to makers and independent constructors on a spaceframe, with Rally2-derived parts. Ford is coming back as a factory team from 2028 with M-Sport, and the new Ford-badged car is due in 2029. It is the fourth constructor committed to a WRC27 car, after Toyota and the independent Project Rally One and WRT Rally1 Spain efforts. The first Rally Scotland, in other words, is a home round for a British champion in year one of a cheaper formula, not the weekend a full Ford works team rolls into Aberdeen.

Northern Ireland’s Josh McErlean and Jon Armstrong both raced at the top level in 2026 and want to be on the entry list. McRae’s old public is in those same forests. The sporting bet the north-east has bought is that an autumn gravel round, paid for locally, still fits a championship whose new owners are thinking about Rome, the United States and a car that costs less than the one that has just gone out of date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Rally Scotland’s deal with the WRC?

The contract signed in March 2026 is an initial three-year stay covering 2027, 2028 and 2029, agreed between Motorsport UK and WRC Promoter GmbH with Scottish Government and council backing. Motorsport UK has said it wants the event to run beyond that first window if the 2027 round works on the ground.

Did Rally Scotland have to pass an FIA test event?

Yes. The FIA’s calendar notes say candidate events, which are test meetings used to check sporting, safety and operational standards, were held in the United Kingdom, the United States and Rome before those rounds were written into the 2027 schedule.

Where will teams service the cars in Aberdeen?

The service park and rally headquarters are inside The Event Complex Aberdeen, the arena also branded P&J Live, so the mechanical work sits under a roof in the city while the stages run on closed forest roads in Aberdeenshire and Moray.

What does the WRC27 cost cap actually cover?

The FIA has set the price of a ready-to-compete WRC27 car in tarmac specification at €345,000. Separate gravel and asphalt kits sit on top of that base figure in the wider rules package, and homologation runs on a ten-year cycle aimed at pulling in new constructors as well as the current makers.

Tickets and a detailed stage map are still to come from the organisers, with Motorsport UK pointing fans to the event’s own sign-up list. The date that is now fixed is the one the north-east bought: 30 September to 3 October, round 12, on gravel, in a championship that had to drop Portugal to make a 15-round year work.

That approach shapes coverage across news, business and technology as much as science, sports and entertainment, and it carries into the lifestyle, travel, auto and gaming pages, where product specifications are checked against the manufacturer's sheet and, where possible, against Harry's own testing.
