Motorola Wide Foldable Bets Compact Size Over Thinness

Leaked specs put Motorola’s first wide foldable at 110 mm tall and 12.6 mm thick, a compact wager against Samsung and Apple.

Leaked specs for Motorola’s first wide foldable put it 13.9 mm shorter than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and 2.9 mm thicker when closed. Concept mockups dated September 28 show a stubby book-style phone with a 6.92-inch inner screen, a 4.97-inch cover, and a horizontal dual-camera bar.

The working launch window is mid-December. The leaked sheet also lists a 5,000 mAh battery, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, and a single 12 GB / 256 GB setup.

Motorola Bets That Smaller Beats Thinner

Samsung spent July turning the Fold name into a short, wide slab. Apple followed on September 9 with the iPhone Duo, another passport-shaped book phone. Motorola’s leaked answer is smaller than both in height and folded width, and it is heavier than the Fold 8 while staying lighter than the Duo.

That is a product bet, not a spec-sheet accident. Folded height is 110 mm against 123.9 mm on the Fold 8 and 117.8 mm on the Duo. Folded width is 76 mm, which is 5.9 mm narrower than Samsung and 8.1 mm narrower than Apple. The bill shows up in depth: 12.6 mm closed, 2.9 mm more than the Fold 8 and 1.3 mm more than the Duo.

The mockups are not official renders. They were built from leaked sketches, the dimension sheet, and the design language already on the Razr Fold and Signature 27. Rounder corners than the Fold 8 are part of that brief. So is a cover screen that is almost half an inch smaller than Samsung’s 5.5-inch panel, which is the trade a lot of people will feel before they notice the extra millimetres in a pocket.

How Short This Foldable Is

Unfolded, the leaked phone is 110 x 149 x 5.8 mm. Folded, it is 110 x 76 x 12.6 mm and 215 g. The inner OLED is listed at 6.92 inches with a 2,364 x 1,728 grid and a 165 Hz ceiling. The cover OLED is 4.97 inches at 1,736 x 1,140. Both panels are smaller than the 7.6-inch inners on the Fold 8 and the Duo.

THE THREE WIDE FOLDABLES

Phone Folded (H x W x D) Open depth Weight Inner Cover
Motorola wide (leak) 110 x 76 x 12.6 mm 5.8 mm 215 g 6.92 in 4.97 in
Galaxy Z Fold 8 123.9 x 81.9 x 9.7 mm 4.5 mm 201 g 7.6 in 5.5 in
iPhone Duo 117.8 x 84.1 x 11.3 mm 5.2 mm 254 g 7.6 in 5.4 in

Samsung’s own spec sheet lists the Fold 8 at 9.7 mm when the Fold 8 is folded and 4.5 mm open, with a 201 g chassis. Apple’s Duo, due October 23, is 11.3 mm closed and 254 g. Motorola’s leaked body is the shortest of the three and the thickest when shut. Open, it is also the thickest of the three, at 5.8 mm against 4.5 mm and 5.2 mm.

The cover is the other squeeze. At 4.97 inches it sits 0.53 inches under the Fold 8’s 5.5-inch front and 0.43 inches under the Duo’s 5.4-inch front. That is the panel people will live on with the book closed, and it is the one Motorola shrank the most.

The Tall Razr Fold Is Already on Sale

This would not be Motorola’s first book-style phone. On March 2 in Barcelona, the company unveiled the Razr Fold as the first book-style foldable in the razr family, then put it on sale on May 21. That phone is the tall twin of the compact leak: an 8.1-inch 2K inner display, a 6.6-inch cover, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, and a 6,000 mAh cell.

With a strikingly slim 6.6″ external display that transforms into a spacious 8.1″ 2K LTPO canvas when unfolded, the razr fold is built for productivity, creativity, and next-level entertainment.

Motorola Mobility, March 2, 2026 press release

Motorola’s own support sheet puts the Razr Fold at 160.05 x 73.6 x 9.89 mm closed and 144.47 x 160.05 x 4.55 mm open, at 243 g. The leaked wide phone is 50.05 mm shorter when shut, 28 g lighter, and 2.71 mm thicker than that Razr Fold closed depth of 9.89 mm. Motorola would be selling two book-style shapes in one year: a tall 8.1-inch canvas with a periscope camera, and a short 6.92-inch canvas without one.

The Razr Fold already uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, IP48 and IP49, and Pantone-named finishes (Blackened Blue and Lily White). The wide leak copies the chip family, the dust and water ratings, and the Pantone habit. It does not copy the 50 MP periscope, the 6,000 mAh cell, or the 16 GB / 512 GB memory floor.

A Thicker Phone With a Bigger Battery

The 12.6 mm closed depth is where the 5,000 mAh dual-cell pack is supposed to live. Samsung rates the Fold 8 at 4,800 mAh typical in a 9.7 mm shell. Motorola’s leaked pack is 200 mAh larger in a body that is 13.9 mm shorter, which is why the extra 2.9 mm of folded depth is doing real work rather than sitting there as unused bulk.

THE COMPACT BET IN FOUR FIGURES

  • Folded height: 110 mm, 13.9 mm under the Fold 8 and 7.8 mm under the Duo.
  • Folded depth: 12.6 mm, 2.9 mm over the Fold 8 and 1.3 mm over the Duo.
  • Battery: 5,000 mAh, 200 mAh over the Fold 8’s 4,800 mAh typical rating.
  • Weight: 215 g, 14 g over the Fold 8 and 39 g under the Duo.

Wireless charging on the leaked sheet is 25W Qi2. Wired charging is listed only as USB Power Delivery, with no wattage. The Razr Fold, by contrast, ships with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging around its 6,000 mAh pack. Anyone coming from that taller Fold will notice the step down on both cell size and charge rate, even if the wide phone still beats Samsung on paper capacity.

At 215 g the leaked body sits in a useful gap. It is not as light as the Fold 8’s 201 g, and it is well under the Duo’s 254 g. Keep the extra 14 g against Samsung in one hand and the 39 g saved against Apple in the other, and the weight story is mixed in the same way the thickness story is mixed.

The Back Gets a Dual-Camera Bar

The mockups put two cameras in a horizontal bar that sticks out of the back, with the Motorola mark on the hinge. Buttons sit high on the right edge. A punch-hole sits in the centre of the cover panel, and another sits in the top-right of the inner panel. Bezels are expected to be even all the way around, a detail the concept images slightly miss.

THE LEAKED DESIGN POINTS

  • Camera bar: Two rear cameras in a raised horizontal housing, no periscope in the sheet.
  • Finishes: PANTONE Coriander (a beige) and PANTONE Dark Botanical Garden (a dark green).
  • Sensors: Side fingerprint reader built into the power button, plus a dedicated physical AI key.
  • Protection: IP48 and IP49, the same dual rating Motorola already prints on the Razr Fold.

The rear cameras are listed as a 50 MP main and a 50 MP ultrawide, with up to 30x digital zoom. Each screen gets a 32 MP selfie camera. The taller Razr Fold carries a 50 MP Sony LYTIA 828 main, a 50 MP ultrawide, and a 50 MP periscope with 3x optical zoom. Dropping the telephoto is how a 12.6 mm compact avoids stacking a third barrel behind a short hinge.

On September 9, the same day Apple showed the Duo, Motorola posted a short silhouette clip of a wide foldable and wrote, “Just wait for our next move.”

That clip confirmed the project without giving dimensions. The September 28 sheet is still unofficial, and the mockups remain someone’s reading of sketches plus current Motorola hardware, not a factory CAD dump.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and 256 GB

The leaked platform is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, the same family Motorola already put in the Razr Fold, clocked up to 3.8 GHz. Memory on the sheet is 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, with no second SKU listed. Android 17 is the planned day-one software. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio round out the radios, with a nano-SIM plus eSIM.

That chip is a generation behind the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Motorola just put in the Signature 27. Using the older part in a late-year foldable is the cleanest way to hold a price under the Fold 8 and the Duo. It is also the choice that will follow the phone into every comparison video in December.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Dimensions: 110 x 149 x 5.8 mm open and 110 x 76 x 12.6 mm closed sit on the leaked sheet and match the mockup scale.
  • Displays: 6.92-inch inner at 165 Hz and 4.97-inch cover are repeated across the spec dump.
  • Project: Motorola has already teased a wide foldable on its own account, so the product is real even if the numbers move.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Retail name: razr flex is an internal label; Parker is the codename; neither is a store name yet.
  • Storage map: 12 GB / 256 GB is what the sheet lists, not a promise that Motorola will ship only that pair.
  • Launch day: mid-December is a target, and the original leak said it is not locked.

A single 256 GB option on a dual-screen phone is the value problem hiding under the size talk. Folded phones eat storage with both cameras and with desktop-style multitasking. If that SKU is the only one that reaches stores, Motorola will be asking compact-fold buyers to live with the smallest flagship storage step of 2026.

Mid-December Is the Working Launch Target

The sheet points at a mid-December debut with Android 17. That would put Motorola’s compact wide foldable in stores about five months after the Fold 8 and about two months after the Duo’s October 23 arrival. It would also land in the same quarter as holiday discounting, which is the only time a 12 GB / 256 GB foldable has a chance against Samsung’s 12 GB / 256 GB Fold 8 openers.

MOTOROLA’S BOOK-FOLD YEAR

  1. March 2, 2026: Unveils the Razr Fold in Barcelona as its first book-style razr.
  2. May 21, 2026: Puts the Razr Fold on sale with an 8.1-inch inner screen and a 6,000 mAh battery.
  3. July 22, 2026: Samsung ships the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the short wide fold Motorola is now chasing.
  4. September 9, 2026: Teases a wide foldable the same day Apple announces the iPhone Duo.
  5. September 28, 2026: Spec sheet and concept mockups circulate, including the 12.6 mm folded depth.
  6. Mid-December 2026: Current launch target for the compact wide foldable.

If those numbers hold, Motorola will have spent 2026 filling both book-style slots: the tall 8.1-inch Razr Fold for people who want a tablet that folds, and a 110 mm wide foldable for people who found the Fold 8 still too tall. The wager is that those people will accept 12.6 mm in a pocket, a 4.97-inch cover, last year’s chip, and 256 GB, as long as the closed phone is the shortest one on the table.
