The Sift Minecraft Dimension Is Playable in Dungeons II
The Sift is playable in Minecraft Dungeons II from September 29, 2026, but Java and Bedrock still wait until 2027 with no portal and no snapshot.
Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026 with the Sift, the series’ first new dimension in over 14 years. It is the fourth world after the Overworld, the Nether, and the End.
Java and Bedrock still wait until 2027. Mojang has not shipped a snapshot or said how a survival world will open a door.
Dungeons II Is the Only Way In
The sequel from Mojang Studios and Double Eleven is out on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox Game Pass carries it from day one. Store listings put the standard edition at $29.99.
In this game you step through the rift and fight in a soul-heavy realm that the Overworld was never built to hold. Up to four players can run the joined-up map together. Armor is split into four pieces, and a jump button is in from the start.
THE DUNGEONS II DOOR
- Launch date: September 29, 2026, on consoles and PC, with Game Pass on day one.
- How you enter: Open rifts in the Overworld, plus an underground portal the illagers crack in the story.
- What it is for: A dungeon crawler about souls, loot, and the Illager High Council, not a survival save.
- Deluxe extra: The Blub pet ships as a Deluxe extra, the same rabbit-like mob vanilla showed at Minecraft Live.
The plot is blunt. Illagers find a portal into the Sift, take its soul power, and rise as the Prime Enchanter, the Grand Illusioner, and the Supreme Evoker. They tear rifts, hit Squid Coast, and force heroes out of a new hub called Brave Haven.
Xbox’s own post told vanilla players the honest bit. If you want a look at mobs, blocks, and biomes, play Dungeons II, then watch later Minecraft Live shows for when the survival version actually arrives.
Every Dimension Still Needs a Reason
Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten was asked on August 19, 2026 why this world was going into Dungeons II and not Minecraft. His answer is the design problem 2027 still has to solve.
Clearly every dimension needs its own “reason to exist”, but there are many potential reasons. Gameplay? Story? Visuals? I think the answer depends on what you want to achieve and the creativity that comes with it.
Jens Bergensten, Minecraft designer, on Bluesky
That line is why a spin-off got the keys. Changing vanilla, he wrote, affects everyone who plays Minecraft. Putting the Sift in Dungeons II lets the studio show a full place without yet locking the every dimension needs its own reason test for survival, building, and speedrunning.
Mans Olson, creative director on Dungeons II, said the team wanted it to feel unlike the Nether and the End. “We wanted to make sure that it was different. That it doesn’t feel like the ones that already exist in the game,” he said. They talked about a place a player might live, not another death pit.
Laura de Llorens, speaking for the Dungeons II team on the Official Xbox Podcast, went further. The group wanted a slice of Minecraft that did not feel purely threatening or purely kind, “just its own independent thing that you just have never encountered before.” Mobs there, she said, thrive on things that hurt the player, because they live there and are adapted to it.
Those are dungeon-crawler answers. Soul refill, artifact cooldowns, and tougher mob waves can carry an action RPG. Survival Minecraft still has to name the job this world does that the Nether’s fast travel and the End’s dragon fight do not.
Fourteen Years of Saying Not Yet
The End arrived in 2011 with Minecraft 1.0. The Nether had landed in 2010. After that, Mojang kept expanding those two worlds instead of opening a fourth.
HOW MINECRAFT PUT OFF A FOURTH WORLD
- 2010: The Nether is added as a lava-cave world you reach through a portal.
- 2011: The End ships with version 1.0 as the dragon fight and the third world.
- July 10, 2012: Nathan Adams, then a Minecraft developer, says there are no plans for a new dimension until the Nether and the End get more depth.
- October 19, 2012: Adams repeats that a fourth world waits until the current ones are developed further.
- September 29, 2018: Several Mojang voices say they are still unhappy with how deep the old dimensions are.
- November 22, 2022: Brandon Pearce argues a new dimension would need to play differently, and could spread content so one world does not overflow.
- August 19, 2026: Bergensten says a dimension still needs a reason to exist.
- September 26, 2026: Minecraft Live names the Sift and shows a short vanilla glimpse, including the Blub.
- September 29, 2026: Dungeons II ships with the Sift playable, three days after the show.
The 2020 Nether Update is the proof of that habit. Four biomes, piglins, and netherite went into the old hell world rather than into a new one. The End never got a rebuild on that scale, which is why some long-time players heard “fourth dimension” and thought of unfinished islands, not pink grass.
Dinnerbone’s 2012 bar was simple. Do not add a world until the ones you have can hold more play. Bergensten’s 2026 bar is stricter. The new world has to justify itself, and Dungeons II is where that justification is being stress-tested in public.
What Is Inside the Sift Right Now?
Xbox named two biomes, Meadows and Carapace, and said other areas were being held back for people who play Dungeons II. The sequel’s map also sends heroes through Singer’s Meadow and Lullaby Hills. Footage of the vanilla glimpse showed pink grass, a turquoise sky, gray trunks, and white canopy trees the community has been calling White Willows.
The look is closer to a spirit field than to netherrack or end stone. Healthy sculk in green and orange sits under the grass. Xbox described souls in the air, new companions and threats, and rules you have to learn after you enter. Shifting tides can hit your character and whoever stands near you. Dangerous new blocks change how you walk the place.
In Dungeons II those tides are not flavor text. They are a named system with three states, already written up as the Flow, Thrive, and Endure tides.
SIFT TIDES IN DUNGEONS II
| Tide | Hero effect | Fight effect |
|---|---|---|
| Flow Tide | No effect | No effect |
| Thrive Tide | Faster soul refill and faster artifact cooldowns | Players lean on souls and gadgets |
| Endure Tide | Passive soul refill stops | Stronger mobs spawn |
That loop is built for a loot game. Thrive makes you hungry for souls. Endure turns the same resource off and throws harder packs at you. Survival Minecraft has no artifact bar and no soul currency in that form, so the 2027 edition cannot copy this screen and call the job done.
A Hytale project posted its own tide system within a day of the Dungeons II launch, using the Sift as the model. The mechanic is already traveling. Vanilla Minecraft still has to invent the version that belongs in a pickaxe game.
Meadows, Carapace, and a Roster Vanilla May Skip
Minecraft Live showed one native creature for the survival game: the Blub, a small passive rabbit-like mob that squeaks and walks rather than hops. The wiki still flags that name as the only official vanilla mob from the glimpse. Block names from the footage remain community labels.
Dungeons II is already full of other Sift natives. Xbox said it is not confirming which of those will move into Minecraft. That gap is the whole point of shipping the spin-off first.
IN DUNGEONS II, NOT CONFIRMED FOR VANILLA
- Sprout: A flying support sifter that beams buffs into allies and cancels if you hit it.
- Nester: A melee hunter that bounds in, bites, then circles on cooldown.
- Sifters: Baby, bearded, and tall variants that bite or throw tracking and delayed shots.
- Singer: A friendly Sift local, sitting beside Sift sheep and echo golems on the sequel’s roster.
- Sculk Monstrosity: A large golem boss in the Sift that charges, swings burning fists, and summons rolling sculk cubes.
- Other bosses: The map also points at a Monarch and a Harmonizer inside the dimension, plus the Twisted Warden on the Overworld side of the story.
Carapace reads as a bone desert with odd blue walls and hollow fossils. Meadows, including Singer’s Meadow, grows plants out of red sculk. Neither is a reskin of a crimson forest or an end midlands. They are still combat stages in this game, with seedlings, sculk slashers, and soul-corrupted packs walking the same pink fields vanilla players only saw in a clip.
If 2027 Minecraft keeps only the Blub and the grass, the Sift becomes a postcard. If it imports the full Dungeons II bestiary, survival worlds inherit an action-RPG food chain. Mojang has not said which way that cut goes.
The Players Who Wanted the End Finished
The first public still of the Sift did what pastel Minecraft always does. People zoomed in on pink grass and a walking rabbit. Under that, a older argument came back. A lot of veterans would rather have seen The End get the Nether Update treatment than watch a fourth world open in a different game.
That objection has a record. From 2012 through 2018, Mojang’s own developers said the existing dimensions were too thin to justify another. Pearce in 2022 still talked about spreading content so one world does not burst. The End is the world that waited. The Sift is the world that skipped the queue by arriving in Dungeons II.
Progression-minded players have a second worry. A pretty dimension that you visit, screenshot, and leave will not hold them. They want the Sift tied to gear, bosses, and a reason to go back, the same way netherite and elytra pull people through the old portals. Dungeons II already has that loop because it is a loot crawler. Survival Minecraft has to build one from blocks, or the 2027 drop will feel like a museum wing.
The pink look is doing marketing work either way. It is loud, it is not lava, and it is not void. It also lets people argue about vibes while the portal recipe, the return logic, and the resource list stay blank.
When Does the Sift Come to Minecraft?
Minecraft’s own recap said the new dimension is coming to Java and Bedrock next year. That is the whole date. No season, no drop name, no snapshot.
The vanilla wiki still lists the Sift as a planned feature. It has not appeared in any development versions. Xbox said Mojang is not talking much about how you will access it in Minecraft, or how that version will differ from Dungeons II, beyond a brief in-development look during the Live broadcast.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Vanilla window: Java and Bedrock are due to get the Sift in 2027, with no day or month attached.
- Named vanilla mob: The Blub is the creature shown for Minecraft itself.
- Named biomes: Meadows and Carapace are the two Xbox has put on the record.
- Playable copy: Dungeons II is the only shipped game that contains the dimension.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The portal: No frame, no item list, and no Overworld structure has been named for survival.
- The transfer list: Sifters, sprouts, tides, and Sift bosses are not confirmed for Java or Bedrock.
- The job: Bergensten’s reason to exist, in gameplay terms, is still an open question for the sandbox.
Dungeons II will keep feeding clips, boss names, and tide tricks for months. Some of that will stick in players’ heads as if it were already Minecraft. It is not. The spin-off can change a cooldown. Vanilla has to change the shape of every world file that ever gets a fourth portal.
Until a snapshot actually generates pink grass, the Sift in Minecraft is a Live clip, a Blub, and a year. The version you can play is the dungeon crawler that shipped on September 29, 2026, and that version is now the reference everyone else will argue with.
