Scorpio Keeps Volume as Mahindra August Mix Shifts

Mahindra sold 59,257 SUVs in August 2026, but Scorpio kept volume while XUV 7XO and Born Electric took the growth and Bolero stalled.

Mahindra sold 59,257 SUVs in India in August 2026, up 50% from 39,399 a year earlier. The total slipped 1.32% from July’s 60,048, and the mix inside it has split.

Scorpio still accounts for more than a quarter of the volume. Growth is coming from the XUV 7XO and from Born Electric, while Bolero is stalling and two older nameplates have all but disappeared.

How August’s 59,257 SUVs Broke Down

Mahindra’s own statement on 1 September put domestic SUV sales of 59,257 units, a 50% rise that includes volumes from subsidiary Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited. Model-level dispatch tallies for the same month add up to that total exactly, and they show three camps, not one boom.

AUGUST 2026 NAMEPLATE MIX

Nameplate August units vs July vs August 2025
Scorpio / N 15,576 -2.70% +58.29%
XUV 7XO 8,541 +3.74% +72.34%
XUV 3XO 8,302 -11.95% +50.37%
Bolero 7,777 -13.33% +2.10%
XEV 9S / 9e 6,509 +9.88% +181.41%
Thar Roxx 5,817 +1.13% +19.13%
3-door Thar 4,647 -3.31% +119.82%
BE 6 1,696 +213.49% no year-ago base

Add the XUV 7XO to the two Born Electric SUVs and the group reaches 16,746 units, 1,170 more than Scorpio on its own. The Thar family, Roxx plus the three-door, adds another 10,464. Those are the lines taking share. Bolero is the large badge that is not.

Scorpio Still Takes One in Four

The Scorpio range, Scorpio-N plus Scorpio Classic, remained Mahindra’s biggest nameplate at 15,576 units, or 26.29% of the month. That is still roughly one in four Mahindra SUVs, and it is 58.29% above the 9,840 units of August 2025, when the whole car market was holding back stock.

It was not a sequential win. July had been 16,009, so August was down 2.70%. Nationally the badge finished tenth among all passenger models, behind the Hyundai Creta’s 16,288, a gap of 712 units. Creta itself was only 2% above its 15,924 of a year earlier, so Scorpio closed a lot of ground without overtaking the mid-size benchmark.

Dr Velusamy R, president of automotive business at Mahindra & Mahindra, pointed at the updated Scorpio-N when he discussed August demand. The company is selling the old rugged badge and a refreshed one as a single volume engine, and that engine still clears every other Mahindra nameplate. It no longer clears the new products when they are counted together.

A 5-Star Rating Lands on the XUV 7XO

The XUV 7XO was the second-best Mahindra badge at 8,541 units, up 72.34% from 4,956 a year earlier. It was also one of the few large lines to rise from July, when it did 8,233, a 3.74% monthly gain while Scorpio, XUV 3XO and Bolero all fell.

Bharat NCAP published a five-star result for the three-row SUV in mid-September, after tests in July on the AX7 diesel automatic in two-wheel drive and the AX7L in four-wheel drive. The rating covers petrol and diesel, manual and automatic. Among Mahindra’s own electric SUVs, the XEV 9e still holds the perfect adult score of 32 out of 32, with the BE 6 at 31.97.

XUV 7XO BHARAT NCAP

  • Adult score: 30.76 out of 32 adult points, five stars.
  • Child score: 44.97 out of 49, five stars.
  • Crash mass: 2,059 kg on the tested seven-seat diesel automatics.
  • Side test: a full 16 out of 16 in the movable barrier, with the pole result marked OK.

That result arrived after the August books had closed, so it did not create the 8,541. It does give dealers a fresh claim into the festive round for a model that was already the only big ICE gainer on the month.

Born Electric Clears 8,205 Units in August

The XEV 9S / 9e pair did 6,509 units, up 181.41% from 2,313 a year earlier and up 9.88% from July’s 5,924. The BE 6 did 1,696, against 541 in July, a 213.49% jump, with no year-ago comparison because the table records zero for August 2025. Together they contributed 8,205 units, more than Bolero and close to the XUV 7XO.

Velusamy named the BE 6 SPORTEQ in the same breath as Scorpio-N. That is the product the company actually refreshed in the middle of the month.

In August, we achieved SUV sales of 59257 units delivering growth of 50%, and total vehicle sales stood at 107648, a 42% YoY growth. Demand continues to remain strong across our portfolio, with the updated Scorpio-N and BE 6 SPORTEQ receiving strong market response from customers. We look forward to building on this momentum during the festive season.

Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra

The BE 6 SPORTEQ series from 15 August is the renamed BE 6 range, with deliveries listed from 26 August, which sits inside the month that just jumped.

WHAT SPORTEQ CHANGED

  • Entry price: 19.45 lakh rupees outright for the ONE with a 59 kWh pack, or 11.45 lakh under Battery-as-a-Service plus 3.75 rupees per kilometre.
  • Batteries: 59 kWh, a new 70 kWh pack, and 79 kWh across eight variants.
  • Cabin: a three-screen 12.3-inch layout on the new dashboard, with Google Gemini in the TEQ_Talk suite.
  • Timing: the first retail units were due from 26 August, so August’s 1,696 already includes the new series.

Electric SUVs are no longer a footnote under a 50% headline. At 8,205 units they are a third pillar, and the company is pricing the BE 6 to keep that pillar moving into the festive weeks.

Bolero Stalls While Two Nameplates Fade

Bolero still moved 7,777 units, so it is not a small badge. It is a stalled one. A year earlier it did 7,617, a 2.10% rise that is a rounding error next to Scorpio, the XUV 7XO or the electric pair. From July’s 8,973 it dropped 13.33%, the steepest slide among the high-volume ICE lines.

The XUV 3XO, grouped with its EV variant, looks healthier on a 50.37% year-on-year rise to 8,302 from 5,521. The monthly read is weaker: 9,429 in July, an 11.95% drop. In the sub-4-metre SUV pack it still sits well behind Tata Punch, Maruti Fronx and Tata Nexon.

THE LINES THAT SHRANK TO THE FLOOR

  • Bolero Neo Plus: 382 units, down 22.36% from a year earlier, a workhorse derivative that is no longer carrying the family.
  • XUV400: 10 units, a first-generation electric leftover beside the Born Electric pair.
  • Marazzo: no sales in August, a zero on a chart that otherwise still fills from Scorpio down to the BE 6.

Mahindra’s August growth is not a rising tide. It is a handful of new and refreshed products covering for a rural staple that has stopped compounding and for two nameplates that have left the mix.

The 5,996-Unit Gap Behind Tata

A 14-carmaker dispatch tally puts India’s August passenger-vehicle market at 441,576 units, up 34.7% from 327,719 a year earlier and down 4.7% from July’s 463,249. Mahindra’s 59,257 is 13.4% of that snapshot, up from 12.0% a year earlier, good for third place.

AUGUST 2026 CARMAKER STANDING

Carmaker August units Share
Maruti Suzuki 176,971 40.1%
Tata 65,253 14.8%
Mahindra 59,257 13.4%
Hyundai 54,396 12.3%
Kia 29,042 6.6%

Tata did 65,253, a 59.1% year-on-year jump, and it rose 4.2% from July’s 62,611. The gap over Mahindra is 5,996 units. Tata and Mahindra together held 28.2% of the 14-carmaker tally, against 24.5% a year earlier. Hyundai’s 54,396 was a 23.6% annual rise that still lost share because Tata and Mahindra grew faster. Kia’s 29,042, up 48.1%, took fifth from Toyota.

Across SUVs, light trucks, three-wheelers and overseas shipments, Mahindra booked total vehicle sales of 107,648 units, a 42% rise. Domestic commercial vehicles were 27,415, up 22%. Exports were 6,054, up 71% from 3,548. Three-wheelers, including electric, were 14,922, up 42%. The SUV book is where the mix fight is, and Tata is still the carmaker Mahindra has to catch for second.

Festive Demand Has to Lift a Soft August

Year to date, the same filing that went to the exchange shows 294,050 utility vehicles through August, against 241,337 a year earlier, a 22% rise. August itself was a down month from July, so the next few weeks have to do the sequential work the company just promised.

THE DATES AROUND THIS MIX

  1. 5 January 2026: Mahindra premieres the XUV 7XO, with prices from 13.66 lakh rupees ex-showroom.
  2. 15 August 2026: the BE 6 is recast as SPORTEQ, with Battery-as-a-Service on the 59 kWh ONE and TWO.
  3. 26 August 2026: SPORTEQ deliveries are listed to begin, inside the month the BE 6 more than triples from July.
  4. 1 September 2026: Mahindra posts the 59,257 SUV figure and flags Scorpio-N and BE 6 SPORTEQ.
  5. 15 September 2026: Bharat NCAP’s five-star XUV 7XO result is published, after the July crash tests.

An updated 3-door Thar is still listed as due in the coming weeks, on a line that already more than doubled from 2,114 units a year ago to 4,647. The three-door slipped 3.31% from July, so the refresh is arriving after a small sequential dip, not a collapse.

The year-on-year percentages in this market still carry last August’s pause, when buyers delayed and factories cut dealer stock on expected GST changes. That low base inflates every winner’s rate. The month-on-month column is the cleaner read, and it says Mahindra’s 59,257 was a slight step back, with the XUV 7XO, the XEV pair, Thar Roxx and the BE 6 doing the lifting while Bolero and the old van-and-400 lines fell away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Bharat NCAP scores did the XUV 7XO receive?

Adult occupant protection is 30.76 out of 32 and child occupant protection is 44.97 out of 49, both five stars. The frontal offset test scored 14.76 out of 16, and the side movable-barrier test scored a full 16, on AX7 diesel automatic seven-seaters tested in July 2026.

When did Mahindra start BE 6 SPORTEQ deliveries?

Deliveries were listed to begin on 26 August 2026, 11 days after the 15 August launch. Outright prices start at 19.45 lakh rupees for the 59 kWh ONE, and Battery-as-a-Service starts at 11.45 lakh plus 3.75 rupees per kilometre on that same pack.

Why was August 2025 a weak comparison month for India car sales?

Buyers deferred purchases that month and manufacturers cut dealer dispatches while they waited on GST changes announced in August 2025. That lower base is why many 2026 year-on-year rates, including Mahindra’s 50%, look larger than the month-on-month figures.

Are the XUV400 and Marazzo still in Mahindra’s sales mix?

In August the XUV400 recorded 10 units and the Marazzo recorded none. The XUV400 still carries a five-star Bharat NCAP result from November 2024, with 30.38 out of 32 for adult protection, even as Born Electric has taken the volume.

What is the starting price of the Mahindra XUV 7XO?

Mahindra premiered the XUV 7XO on 5 January 2026 at 13.66 lakh rupees ex-showroom for the AX seven-seat petrol manual. Higher AX7 and AX7L diesel automatic and all-wheel-drive variants sit well above that floor, which is the end of the range that just posted the 8,541-unit August tally.
