Cardano Voters Paid to Put Barça Fan Lab On-Chain

Barça Fan Lab went live on Cardano after Catalyst Fund 13 voters allocated 1,425,000 ADA, a community grant beside the club’s older Chiliz fan-token deals.

FC Barcelona opened Barça Fan Lab on September 25, 2026, a Cardano platform that issues fan credentials through the club’s BarçaID login. Project Catalyst Fund 13, not the commercial office, is paying for the build.

ADA holders voted through 1,425,000 ADA from Fund 13 for a 12-month fan-engagement project. At $0.2544 that pot is about $363,000, a rounding error next to the club’s older crypto deals.

Cardano Holders Paid 1.425 Million ADA for the Lab

The funded bid is titled “FC Barcelona – Fan engagement infrastructure Cardano,” project 1300101, in the Fund 13 Cardano Partners: Enterprise R&D challenge. The applicant is the club, listed as an incorporated entity, with the Barça Vision group named as co-proposers, including Anna Soler, Jordi Mompart, Lucia Matamoros, Ferran Salvat, Holger Bittner, and Eric Carulla.

The problem statement on the Catalyst page is blunt. The club wanted new ways to reach young fans, and Cardano wanted exposure that might lift transactions. Both sides, the bid said, needed a bridge.

The proposal clock started on January 20, 2025. The lab went live 20 months later, on September 25, 2026, even though the form asked for 12 months. A change request sits on the file from November 28, 2025. Two of six milestones are marked complete, and Andamio has posted public milestone reports on GitHub for the second slice, with a Barça Vision sign-off dated May 14, 2026.

THE FUND 13 LEDGER

Item Figure
Grant 1,425,000 ADA
Paid out 789,500 ADA
Still in the pot 635,500 ADA
Wallet votes cast 740
Yes, by ADA weight 341 million ADA
Abstain, by ADA weight 88.4 million ADA
Milestones done 2 of 6

Those yes votes are stake weight, not 341 million people. Seven hundred and forty wallets decided the ballot. At $0.2544, the 789,500 ADA already sent is about $201,000, with about $162,000 still parked against the last four milestones.

The same bid values the club at $5.51 billion, with more than 150,000 member socis, more than 1,200 official penyes, and more than 400 million social followers. It also says only 20% of fans are women, which is one of the social targets the courses are meant to hit. A community treasury is underwriting a product for one of football’s richest names.

Two Years of Quiet Work at Andamio

Andamio is the technology partner. On Cardano it sells a learn-to-work loop that mixes lessons, tasks, and a treasury, so a club can teach a skill, collect the work, and pay in digital assets. James Dunseith, co-founder of Andamio, wrote that the team spent two years working behind the scenes to bring the brand to Cardano, and that the lab was live. He thanked Barça Vision, Andamio, and UTXOS.

The Cardano Foundation put the same launch on the record on September 25, naming Andamio and Fund 13 and pointing fans at credentials stored in a Cardano portfolio.

Andamio’s own note drew a sharper line than the club copy. Most sports apps, it said, still run a loop of content, engagement, and ads.

Most fan experiences run on one loop: content, engagement, advertising. Fans watch. Clubs count. We believe in a different one: take part, contribute, prove it.

Andamio, official account, September 25, 2026

That is the vendor’s pitch, and it is also why Andamio, not the dressing room, is the party with a product on the line. If the credentials never leave a learning portal, Cardano still paid for a branded course engine. If they become a loyalty layer, Andamio owns the rails.

What Fans Get From Barça Fan Lab

The club launched Barça Fan Lab with Andamio as a content space first. Access is through BarçaID, the login the club already uses. That login can spawn a Cardano Web3 portfolio tied to the user, where credentials and access tokens from the pathways are meant to sit.

The public note does not ask fans to run a hardware wallet or to understand seed phrases. The point of wiring BarçaID to a Cardano portfolio is to hide that step. The club framed the whole thing as knowledge and outreach, with a longer aim of a model other fan bases could copy.

FOUR AREAS ON THE LAB

  • History and identity: Club legacy, values, and the slogan Més que un club (More than a club).
  • Social brief: Sustainability, inclusion, women’s empowerment, technology, and responsible digital innovation.
  • Community shift: Moving supporters from physical fan groups into digital participation.
  • Web3 trials: Collectibles, credentials, loyalty, wallets, NFTs, and smart contracts, listed as cases to explore rather than as a live shop.

The loudest Cardano talk around the launch treated the login as the prize, because a BarçaID session can mint a chain portfolio without a separate crypto onboarding dance. That reading fits the product. It still leaves the grant as a marketing spend by ADA holders, not a rights fee from the club.

The Club Already Sold Fan Tokens Through Chiliz

Barça Fan Lab is not the club’s first chain product. In February 2020, FC Barcelona signed with Chiliz and Socios.com to issue $BAR fan tokens. The first flash sale in June 2020 moved 600,000 tokens at €2 each, raising $1.3 million in under two hours across 106 countries, with more than $6 million deposited against a 600,000-token float. A wider supply of 40 million tokens had been sketched at launch.

On August 1, 2022, Chiliz announced a $100 million stake in Barça Studios for 24.5% of the club’s digital content hub. The same note said more than $39 million of $BAR had been sold, with perks that ran from merchandise to a kickabout on the Camp Nou pitch. Socios’ $BAR record sat at $72.55 in April 2021.

BARÇA ON CHAIN SINCE 2020

  1. February 13, 2020: Club signs a global fan-token deal with Chiliz and Socios.com.
  2. June 22, 2020: 600,000 $BAR tokens sell in under two hours for $1.3 million.
  3. April 2021: $BAR prints an all-time high of $72.55.
  4. August 1, 2022: Chiliz invests $100 million for 24.5% of Barça Studios; more than $39 million of $BAR already sold.
  5. January 20, 2025: Catalyst project 1300101 starts, budget 1,425,000 ADA.
  6. September 25, 2026: Barça Fan Lab opens on Cardano with Andamio and BarçaID.

$100 million bought equity in a studio. 1,425,000 ADA bought a credentials pilot. The club can run both stories at once, which is why the Fan Lab note reads like a values programme and the Catalyst form reads like an adoption funnel.

ADA Was Climbing Before Friday’s Announcement

CoinMarketCap’s daily table does not show a one-day freak spike that starts and ends with the press note. ADA closed September 25 at $0.2585, up 4.22%. On September 26 it was $0.2544, down 1.57% on the day. Over 30 days the token was up 21.40%.

ADA AROUND THE LAUNCH

  • Launch-day close: $0.2585 on September 25, 2026, up 4.22%.
  • Next session: $0.2544 on September 26, down 1.57%.
  • Thirty-day move: up 21.40%.
  • Record: $3.09 on September 1, 2021, so $0.2544 is about 8% of that high.

The 4.22% print is real, and it is also a slice of a bounce that was already running. Anyone who only saw a “Barcelona pumps ADA” headline missed the month. The grant is still the load-bearing fact. The candle is not.

The Launch Talks Credentials, Not ADA Payouts

The Fund 13 form and the September 25 club note are not the same product sheet. The bid put Discord at the centre, promised ADA and club NFTs for tasks, and walked through learn-to-work cycles such as a 125-year history video, a plastics challenge, and a filmed wallet setup. NMKR was named for minting kit. Outputs were marked not open source.

The live lab, as the club described it, is a BarçaID content space with four pathways and a Cardano portfolio for badges. ADA rewards do not appear in that note. Discord is not the front door. The Web3 shop talk is filed under experiments.

THE BID AND THE PRODUCT

Piece Fund 13 bid September 25 lab
Front door Discord BarçaID
Rewards named ADA and club NFTs Credentials and access tokens
Shape Learn-to-work cycles Four learning areas
NFT tooling named NMKR Not in the club note
Code Not open source Not stated

None of that makes the launch fake. It does mean ADA voters funded a wider machine than the one the club put on the homepage. Four milestones and 635,500 ADA are still on the Catalyst books, so the rest of the bid can still be built, or it can stay in the PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Catalyst Challenge Funded Barça Fan Lab?

The proposal sat in Fund 13’s Cardano Partners: Enterprise R&D challenge as project 1300101, with the club as the incorporated applicant and Barça Vision staff listed as co-proposers. The form asked for 12 months of work and 1,425,000 ADA, and it told reviewers there were no outside dependencies even while Andamio and NMKR were named in the method.

Is Barça Fan Lab Open Source?

No. The Fund 13 proposal marked project outputs as not open source and said the collaboration had not yet defined which pieces, if any, would be released later. Milestone evidence is being posted in a public Andamio reporting repo, which is not the same as opening the product code.

How Large Was Cardano’s Fund 13 Vote?

Catalyst’s Fund 13 results note said more than 2.5 billion ADA took part, more than 7,000 wallets cast almost 311,000 individual votes, and 199 projects were funded. That round brought Catalyst’s all-time funded count to 2,090, with nearly 1,050 marked completed at the time of the results.

Which Other Cardano Firms Were Named in the Bid?

NMKR was listed for NFT minting APIs and no-code blocks, and the implementation plan put Discord forward as the first place tech-savvy fans would meet Andamio. The September 25 club note does not repeat those names; it presents BarçaID as the access layer and Andamio as the technology partner.
