Alan Ritchson Walks Into a Helldivers Movie About Spare Heroes

Alan Ritchson is in talks for Sony’s Helldivers film after Jason Momoa left, a star job that collides with a game built on disposable soldiers.

Alan Ritchson is in talks to star in Sony’s Helldivers movie, the first studio theatrical lead of his Reacher-era career. Jason Momoa left in June. Justin Lin is still directing, and the film is dated for November 10, 2027. Sony had no comment.

If the deal closes, Ritchson plays one soldier in an elite unit that the game itself treats as spare parts. That is the job Sony is trying to fill with a star.

A Lead Role With No Deal Attached

People close to the talks say Ritchson would play one of the Helldivers, with more roles still to come. Plot details remain under wraps. Nothing in the leak names a character, a planet, or a final set of co-stars.

Hutch Parker is producing with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and with Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment. Ritchson is repped by WME and Range. The studio has held the November 10, 2027 date since the project was first put on the calendar, which is why the search for a lead did not pause after Momoa walked.

The property comes from the Swedish studio behind Helldivers, Arrowhead Game Studios, and from the 2024 sequel that turned a 2015 cult shooter into a live-service hit. Helldivers 2 sold more than 12 million units on PlayStation 5 and PC in its first four months. Sony Interactive Entertainment later said more than 22.9 million people had played it as of August 9, 2026, a player count taken before the game joined the PlayStation Plus catalog on August 12.

Helldivers Treats Its Heroes as Spare Parts

Official copy still tells recruits to wage war for peace and die for democracy. Players drop in as nameless shock troops and spread peace, liberty and Managed Democracy with orbital strikes, then die, then drop in again. Friendly fire is always on. The Bile Titan entry on the game page even advises a “high personnel replacement budget.”

That loop is the joke, and it is also the design. A Helldivers film that builds a two-hour arc around one famous body has to fight the thing audiences already play. The cleaner version of this movie would kill its lead on the first drop, then send in the next volunteer with the same speech.

HOW SUPER EARTH SELLS THE WAR

  • Managed Democracy: Citizens answer a quiz and a computer assigns the vote, which the lore treats as an upgrade on ordinary elections.
  • The mission line: Helldivers spread peace with the biggest explosives in the galaxy, then get replaced when the explosives land on them.
  • The enemies: Bugs stand in for a resource war, Automatons get painted as socialist machines, and the Illuminate strip captives of “the Democratic process.”
  • The tone: Briefings play it straight, which is how the satire works, and how a muscle-hero movie can miss it.

Arrowhead is still writing in that voice. A new Ironclad Democracy Warbond is due on September 22, 2026, and studio writer Mitchell Ayre used the drop to remind players they are not meant to last.

Get out there, Helldivers, and create a legacy that will endure considerably longer than you do.

Ayre’s line about a legacy that will endure considerably longer than the soldier who earns it is the whole adaptation problem in one sentence. Sony needs a face on the poster. The game needs the face to be replaceable.

Jason Momoa Left the Film in June

Momoa attached at the start of 2026 and was gone by June 8. The split has been described as creative differences. Sony kept Lin and kept the date, then spent the summer looking for another large lead.

Momoa had Street Fighter, a Minecraft sequel, and other studio work on his calendar, so the exit did not leave him idle. It did leave Helldivers without the body the studio had already shown off. Lin had boarded in December 2025, after the project was announced at CES in 2025 and before a CinemaCon tease later in 2026.

THE ROAD TO A VACANT LEAD

  1. January 2025: Sony announces a live-action Helldivers film at CES.
  2. December 2025: Justin Lin signs on to direct.
  3. February 2026: Jason Momoa attaches as the star.
  4. Spring 2026: The studio teases the adaptation at CinemaCon.
  5. June 8, 2026: Momoa exits after about four months, and Sony starts a new search.
  6. September 18, 2026: Alan Ritchson is in talks to take the seat, three months after Momoa walked.

Gary Dauberman, who wrote It, Annabelle, and the Until Dawn film, turned in the first draft. Chris Bremner, who wrote Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, wrote the most recent one. Horror, then buddy-cop spectacle, is the paper trail under a property that lives on deadpan propaganda.

Ritchson’s First Studio Tentpole Is This One

Ritchson became a streaming star as Jack Reacher on Prime Video, and the fourth season recently wrapped. He has been trying to move that size onto a cinema screen. Helldivers would be the first time he headlines a theatrical studio feature, which is the real offer on the table if the talks close.

The recent film work splits by venue. War Machine, which arrived on Netflix on March 6, 2026, became the service’s most-watched movie of the year and landed in its all-time top 10 after 39.3 million views in three days. Motor City, a $30 million revenge film, took about $3 million worldwide after a July 24, 2026 U.S. release. He has also turned up in Fast X and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and he is on screen with Owen Wilson in Runner.

WHERE RITCHSON HAS BEEN WORKING

Project Venue What it did
Reacher Prime Video The role that made him a lead; season 4 recently wrapped
War Machine Netflix, March 6, 2026 39.3 million views in three days; year’s most-watched film on the service
Motor City Theaters, July 24, 2026 About $3 million worldwide against a $30 million budget
Helldivers Sony theatrical, Nov. 10, 2027 In talks to headline; deal not closed

Streaming loves him in a tight close-up with a broken rib cage and a simple plot. A November studio date asks for something else: an opening weekend, a toy-aisle silhouette, and a character who can survive a trailer. Super Earth’s soldiers are written to fail that test on purpose.

Uncharted Still Carries the Theatrical Slate

PlayStation Productions has already put several games on screens. The Last of Us on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock carried the TV side. The theatrical ledger is thinner, and Uncharted is still the title the studio points to when it wants a number.

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg’s Uncharted earned $407 million worldwide in 2022. Gran Turismo finished at about $122 million in 2023. Until Dawn, also from a Dauberman script, took about $50 million in 2025. A new Resident Evil film opened on September 18, 2026, the same day the Ritchson talks leaked.

PLAYSTATION PRODUCTIONS AT THE BOX OFFICE

Film Year Worldwide gross
Uncharted 2022 $407 million
Gran Turismo 2023 About $122 million
Until Dawn 2025 About $50 million

Helldivers 2’s player count is the reason this one is dated like a tentpole instead of a mid-budget experiment. Xbox got the game on August 26, 2025, and it is still adding warbonds and seasons. That live audience will show up ready to grade the movie on whether the drops, the stratagems, and the briefing-room nonsense survive a Lin action set piece.

Justin Lin Gets the Bad Boys Draft

Lin made his name on The Fast and the Furious films and on Star Trek Beyond, and he directed Last Days in 2025. He knows how to stage vehicles, bodies, and noise. Helldivers is a co-op shooter about four people (the game supports up to four online) calling in hardware that can erase the squad as easily as the bugs.

Bremner’s Bad Boys drafts suggest Sony wants banter and set pieces more than a cold satire. Dauberman’s first pass came from a writer who had just done Until Dawn for the same production group. Somewhere between those two tones is the movie Lin has to shoot if November 10, 2027 is going to mean a finished film rather than a date on a slide.

Ritchson can play the joke without winking, which is what Super Earth asks of its soldiers. He can also play a sincere action lead, which is what Reacher trained audiences to expect. Lin has to pick which of those men gets the armor, because the game will not do that work for him.

November 2027 Is Already on the Calendar

The date has survived a CES launch, a director booking, a CinemaCon tease, a four-month star, and a summer without one. Ritchson is the latest attempt to put a name on a unit the game designed to be nameless. If the talks close, Sony gets a poster. If they do not, the calendar still says November 10, 2027, and the next volunteer will be asked to drop in.
