The Megaforce Flop Is Finally a Festival Winner
A fan film about 1982’s Megaforce bomb is winning festival prizes the original never got, while the flying motorcycles still wait for a wide rerelease.
A fan documentary about Megaforce, the 1982 action bomb, has been winning festival prizes the original never came close to. Bob Lindenmayer’s Making Megaforce premiered in June 2025 and took Best Film at LA Film Invasion, the first documentary to win that festival’s top prize.
Hal Needham, the stuntman who directed Smokey and the Bandit, spent $20 million trying to turn flying motorcycles and gold spandex into a summer event. The film took in $5,675,599 and drew three Golden Raspberry nominations. The movie he thought had the pulse of the Reagan years is now a hit as a story about how badly it missed.
A $20 Million Bond Movie Without Roger Moore
Needham came off car-crash comedies and wanted a gadget picture. Megaforce, budgeted at $20 million and released on June 25, 1982, was his version of a rapid-deployment peacekeeping army that rode rocket bikes into fictional countries named Sardun and Gamibia. Golden Harvest put it on a $50 million slate aimed at the Western market, alongside High Road to China and The Protector, and 20th Century Fox opened it in the United States.
Producer Albert S. Ruddy, who had made The Godfather, later said he and Needham had talked to another actor when the script was straighter, then rewrote toward camp. Barry Bostwick, coming off The Pirates of Penzance on stage in Los Angeles, got top billing for the first time and signed a three-picture deal covering sequels. He kept the Penzance beard so Commander Ace Hunter would have a look he could shave off later.
Kind of a version of James Bond done with a helluva lot of less budget and no Roger Moore, but it was a high tech, good ‘right wing’ film and I thought it was kinda interesting.

He also told interviewers the buggies started as dune buggies with weapons bolted on, and that the military spent a week in the desert watching how they handled. Bostwick claimed the Pentagon tried to stop the shoot by withholding 40 army tanks, because the strike force looked too much like covert units still in the field. Needham sold a gentler pitch in 1981: lots of action, no one seen getting killed, heroes the public could cheer for.
Mattel designed the clothes. There was no credited costume designer. William Fredrick, who had built vehicles for Needham’s Hooper, spent eight months and $1 million on cars and bikes that actually ran. Needham fell off a motorcycle during filming and broke several ribs. The headquarters were done with Introvision, a process that let actors walk through still photographs instead of full sets. A sequel titled Deeds Not Words was already on the calendar.
Three Weekends Wiped Out the Theatrical Run
Fox opened Megaforce on 1,193 screens. It landed at No. 9, then shed screens and money so fast the wide release was a memory by mid-July. Weekend grosses do not add up to the full domestic take, because weekdays filled the gap; the collapse still reads in the Friday-to-Sunday numbers.
THE 1982 WEEKEND CHART
| Weekend | Rank | Gross | Theaters | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June 25, 1982 | 9 | $2,350,021 | 1,193 | – |
| July 2, 1982 | 13 | $1,378,624 | 900 | -41% |
| July 9, 1982 | 17 | $341,941 | 339 | -75% |
The opening weekend of $2,350,021 was 41.4 percent of the entire domestic gross. Worldwide figures match the U.S. number. That is 28 percent of the $20 million production budget, before prints and ads. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a D+. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 6%. IMDb users have it at 3.7 out of 10, from 4.6K ratings.
On April 11, 1983, the third Golden Raspberry Awards nominated Megaforce for Worst Picture, Needham for Worst Director, and Michael Beck, who played Dallas, for Worst Supporting Actor. It won none of the three. Needham later said the film went right in the toilet, and that he thought he had the pulse of the country better than he did, going off Reagan’s election. He also said he had not made it high tech enough next to what else was in theaters. Early tracking had already flagged Mad Max 2 as the problem in the lane.
The Fan Who Bought the Leftover Machines
Lindenmayer saw Megaforce as a kid in Arizona and never let it go. He collects the hardware. Festival notes for Making Megaforce say he owns a working fleet of the film’s dune buggies and motorcycles, and the documentary follows him as he tries to restage a set piece and track down the people who built the original. The official tagline calls it the documentary nobody asked for about the movie nobody remembers.
Crew members who sat for him were not performing irony. Lindenmayer told a Seattle Film Festival interviewer that everybody from the original production had a real soft spot for the picture, and that they were shocked and secretly tickled he wanted to talk about it. Kent Hill, writing after a festival screening, described a trip to the Nevada salt flats where Needham shot a battle with more than 30 tanks, a dozen armored carriers, Hercules aircraft, and 100 men. Film critic Mike McGranaghan, who saw both films together at the 2026 Chattanooga Film Festival, said the stories include Needham’s disregard for plot and an untested liquid explosive that sent flaming debris at the crew.
The 1 hour 37 minute feature is as much about that hunt as it is about 1982. McGranaghan found it haphazard and too taken with Lindenmayer’s restoration work, then said the stories are great and the thing is fun to watch. Festival juries went further than that. The people who already loved the flying bikes did not need a critic to reverse the 6%. They needed someone to point a camera at the leftover machines and at the star who would still get in the van.
Barry Bostwick Became the Movie-Star Dad
Ace Hunter wears a blue bandana, a thick beard, and gold spandex that looks borrowed from a gym commercial. Bostwick, already famous from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, plays it straight. McGranaghan called the performance unapologetically campy and the movie a terrible one that is still great fun, especially once the bikes start dumping plumes of colored smoke across the desert.
Lindenmayer pitched him the way a fan pitches a hero. “Do you want to come along with me on this adventure? Yeah? And now he literally is my movie star dad,” Lindenmayer said. In his director’s statement he framed a lifelong mission to restore the honor of a film almost nobody else wanted.
Sometimes you just love what you love, no apologies.
Bob Lindenmayer, director, Making Megaforce press kit
Beck, who took the Razzie nomination, was drier about the original paycheck. He said it was not the kind of movie you look for at the Oscars, and that it paid him and his new family enough to buy their first house. Persis Khambatta, a few years past Star Trek: The Motion Picture, plays Major Zara Benbhutto, aces Hunter’s trials, and still gets benched because she is an outsider; she died in 1998, at 49. Henry Silva plays Duke Guerera, Hunter’s old academy friend turned adversary, and even here he looks like a proper villain. Edward Mulhare is the general who asks for help, then leaves Megaforce stranded when Sardun decides the unit is too dangerous to let back across the border.
Robert Fuller, in a small pilot role, later said he was not fond of the picture. Bostwick, in the run-up to release, had been all in. “You know what’s good about this film? It’s plausible. We need an international force like this to keep the peace. I wouldn’t mind betting that one day there’s a real Megaforce operating somewhere in the world,” he said. The documentary is what he got instead of that future: a second lead role, decades on, as the patient famous friend in someone else’s obsession.
Why Festivals Keep Pairing the Two Films
Making Megaforce has been traveling as a companion piece, not as a replacement. The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana ran the documentary with a Lindenmayer Q&A, then brought the 1982 film back a week later. Chattanooga in June 2026 screened them as a double bill. CutreCon in Spain put both on a free campus screen. That is the commercial life the original never built: a room, a fan, and the star or the director still willing to stay for questions.
THE DOCUMENTARY’S FESTIVAL RUN
- June 2025: World premiere at LA Film Invasion, where it wins Best Film, the first documentary to take that festival’s top prize.
- October 2025: Seattle Film Festival awards Best U.S. Documentary Feature, and Lindenmayer takes the Seattle Filmmaker Award for a feature.
- 2025: Film Threat’s Award This! names it Best Pop Culture Documentary, in a tie with Selling Superman.
- January 9-15, 2026: Screens at the Daddying Film Festival, which sold it as a tribute to fandom, friendship, and flying motorcycles.
- March 2026: Omaha Film Festival hosts Lindenmayer for a Q&A on rights, discs, and Barry Bostwick.
- June 2026: Chattanooga Film Festival pairs Making Megaforce with Megaforce for a two-film sitting.
Indiegogo backers were told in September 2025 that festivals required the film to stay unreleased, that a distribution rep was working DVD, theatrical, and streaming options, and that discs were aimed at the first quarter of 2026. By May 2026, backers were posting that Blu-rays had arrived, one of them with a screen-used windshield from Mega-Destroyer 6 in the box. On August 13, 2026, the 80s Video Shop account thanked Lindenmayer for sending a copy. A May 2026 streaming guide listed the film on no major platform. The copies that exist move through crowdfunding, specialist shops, and festival merch tables.
Deeds Not Words Never Left the Virgin Islands
Needham told Starlog that if Megaforce hit, cameras would roll in September 1982 on Deeds Not Words, shifting the unit to a tropical setting in the Virgin Islands. Bostwick’s three-picture deal assumed that world. The first film’s last gesture is a thumbs-up between enemies after Hunter’s bike sprouts airfoils, fires a rocket, and catches a cargo plane in the air. There was nowhere to take that beat once the gross came in.
Needham followed it with Stroker Ace and Cannonball Run II, then spent the rest of the decade mostly in television, including a string of Bandit TV movies. He had already left daily stunt work. In 1986 he and William L. Fredrick, the same builder behind Megaforce’s working fleet, received a Scientific and Engineering Award for the Shotmaker Elite camera car. In 2012 the Academy gave Needham an honorary Oscar for stunt work. He died of cancer on October 25, 2013, at 82. Megaforce stayed the expensive miss in the middle of the reel, the one he admitted had gone in the toilet.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have said they used the movie as a base for Team America: World Police, flying motorcycle, underground base, and all. On a South Park DVD intro, Parker starts pitching Megaforce as if it were the episode, then gets talked down. That is a longer afterlife than Deeds Not Words ever earned, and it still is not a sequel.
Hot Wheels, an Atari Cartridge and Colored Smoke
The film was built to be touched. Mattel did not only cut the jumpsuits. It shipped playsets. A 99-minute shoot that could not hold a theater for three weekends still left objects in kids’ rooms, which is why Lindenmayer had something to buy besides memories.
WHAT LEFT THE THEATER IN 1982
- Mattel clothes: The company designed the on-screen wardrobe, which is why Ace Hunter looks like a toy that learned to salute.
- Hot Wheels and Vertibird: Mattel issued Megaforce-themed playsets to sit next to the movie’s bikes and buggies.
- Atari 2600: A Mega Force cartridge arrived the same year, extending the brand into living rooms the theatrical run had already left.
- 707 on the radio: The group’s theme went out on Boardwalk Records and reached the middle of the Billboard Hot 100, with a CD soundtrack following in 2011 from BSX Records.
On screen, the goods that still work are the ones Needham could stage without a speech. The colored-smoke charge across the dry lake. The bike that grows wings. The thumb-kiss the unit uses as a salute. Dialogue trying to be funny is where the 99 minutes sag, which is the same complaint Janet Maslin filed in 1982 when she listed silly lines, poor matching shots, and a silhouette scene against a magenta sky.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The original rights split: Lindenmayer said at Omaha in March 2026 that Disney, via 20th Century Fox, holds U.S. theatrical rights only, while Fortune Star, a Golden Harvest shadow company, holds international rights, which is why a U.S. Blu-ray of Megaforce has not appeared.
- The documentary’s discs: Crowdfunding backers received Blu-rays in 2026, and at least one specialist video shop had a copy by August 13, 2026.
- The festival prizes: Best Film at LA Film Invasion, Best U.S. Documentary Feature in Seattle, and Film Threat’s Best Pop Culture Documentary are already on the record.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Arrow Video 4K: Lindenmayer told the Omaha crowd Arrow was preparing a region-free 4K of Megaforce, possibly as a box with Making Megaforce; he described that as in the works, not as a dated street release.
- Wide streaming: No major platform listing had turned up by May 2026, and the filmmakers have not posted a public SVOD date.
Lindenmayer told that Omaha audience the Chinese side of the old Golden Harvest chain effectively controls most of Megaforce now, and that the Fox theatrical piece is a separate slice. Until a disc deal is dated and shipped to stores, the people who already love the flying bike keep passing the 1982 film, and the film about the film, across festival aisles and crowdfunding queues, with Bostwick still walking into the room to talk about a three-picture deal that stopped at one.
