The Colts Showed How to Drag the Chiefs Into Overtime
Kansas City escaped Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime after an unsacked Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor nearly stole Arrowhead Stadium.
Harrison Butker kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired in overtime, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Indianapolis Colts 33-30. The Sunday night game at Arrowhead Stadium lifted Kansas City to 2-0 and dropped Indianapolis to 0-2.
Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. The Colts still left town with a working plan: hand the ball to Jonathan Taylor, get it out of Daniel Jones’s hands before the rush arrives, and make Kansas City beat you in overtime.
Indianapolis Kept the Pass Rush on the Sideline
Jones finished 22 of 31 for 210 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He was sacked on zero dropbacks. Taylor carried 24 times for 92 yards and two scores and added four catches for 40 yards, and Josh Downs led the visitors with seven receptions for 72 yards.
That is how a 0-2 team put 30 points on the board in Kansas City. Quick throws and a full-backfield diet starved the front that had sacked Denver four times six days earlier. Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, and the rest of Steve Spagnuolo’s rush never got a clean run at the quarterback because the ball was gone.
Kansas City still won the yardage fight. Mahomes went 32 of 47 with a 114.0 rating, the offense ran for 152 yards, and the Chiefs held the ball 37 minutes to Indianapolis’s 33. They also drew eight penalties for 86 yards and needed every one of Butker’s four field goals.
SUNDAY NIGHT AT ARROWHEAD
| Stat | Chiefs | Colts |
|---|---|---|
| Passing | Mahomes 32/47, 382, 3 TD | Jones 22/31, 210, 1 TD, 1 INT |
| Sacks allowed | 2 for 11 yards | 0 |
| Rushing | 152 yards (Walker 24-117) | 119 yards (Taylor 24-92, 2 TD) |
| Time of possession | 37:00 | 33:00 |
| Turnovers | 0 | 1 |
| Third downs | 5 of 13 | 5 of 12 |
Indianapolis went 2 of 3 in the red zone and scored on long, slow drives, including a 13-play, 64-yard march that Taylor finished from 5 yards out to tie the game at 27-27 in the fourth quarter. That is the formula other staffs will freeze on the tablet this week.
The Catch That Should Have Ended Kansas City’s Night
Overtime opened with Kansas City’s 11-play field-goal drive. Butker’s 31-yarder made it 30-27. Jones then went right at L’Jarius Sneed, and Laquon Treadwell beat him for 48 yards. Treadwell bobbled as he hit the ground, got up, and had the ball punched loose. Nohl Williams arrived in time to force what looked like the game.
Officials ruled a fumble on the field. Replay said Treadwell was down by contact. Indianapolis had life and a chance to take the lead, then ran three conservative plays and sent Spencer Shrader out for a 38-yard kick that tied it at 30-30 with 3:11 left. That sequence handed Mahomes the ball and the clock.
We had the big play in overtime where we think we stripped the ball. I was actually kinda glad, I didn’t want to see twitters reaction if they would’ve called it a fumble.
Patrick Mahomes, quarterback, after the Colts game
The Colts had won the overtime toss and elected to kick. After the tying field goal they never touched the ball again. Kansas City gave Walker three straight carries to midfield, Mahomes hit him for 22 yards, and Butker drilled the 40-yarder as the clock hit zero.
HOW OVERTIME UNFOLDED
- Butker from 31: Kansas City’s first extra-period drive ended with a 30-27 lead.
- Treadwell for 48: Jones beat Sneed deep, and replay wiped out Williams’s forced fumble.
- Shrader from 38: Indianapolis settled for the tie with 3:11 remaining.
- Walker, then Butker: Three runs, a 22-yard catch, and the 40-yard winner as time expired.
Shane Steichen’s club had Kansas City on the ropes after the deep ball and chose the safe points. The extra session became a Mahomes possession game, which is the one fight Indianapolis could not win.

Walker Forced 15 Missed Tackles After a 173-Yard Debut
Kenneth Walker III carried 24 times for 117 yards and caught 6 passes for 61, 178 yards from scrimmage on a night when the Chiefs kept going back to him in the fourth quarter and overtime. Next Gen Stats logged 15 missed tackles on Sunday night, one more than the 14 he forced against Denver, a total no other NFL back has matched twice in this young season.
Six days earlier, in his first game after a three-year deal signed on March 12, Walker ran 23 times for 173 yards and a 60-yard touchdown, caught 3 balls for 18 yards and another score, and posted 191 yards from scrimmage in a 31-10 win. The 173 yards were a career high, the most rushing yards in a Mahomes start, and the second-most by a veteran in a debut with a new club, behind Michael Turner’s 220 for Atlanta in 2008. He also forced 14 broken tackles in his debut, the most by a Chief in the Next Gen Stats era.
Y’all were asking, what’s the difference with our offense? And I said, K9. Like, it’s just that simple.
Patrick Mahomes, quarterback, after the Week 1 win over Denver
Walker won Super Bowl LX MVP with Seattle, running 27 times for 135 yards in a 29-13 win over New England. Kansas City had not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Kareem Hunt in 2017, the last season Mahomes was not the starter. Two games in, Walker has 47 carries for 290 yards and 9 catches for 79, and the offense finally has a back who can finish a drive without asking Mahomes to invent one.
WALKER’S FIRST TWO GAMES
| Week 1 vs. Denver | Week 2 vs. Indianapolis | |
|---|---|---|
| Carries-yards-TD | 23-173-1 | 24-117-0 |
| Receptions-yards-TD | 3-18-1 | 6-61-0 |
| Scrimmage yards | 191 | 178 |
| Missed tackles forced | 14 | 15 |
Rookie Emmett Johnson added 2 carries for 15 yards and 2 catches for 20 against the Colts, the same change-of-pace role he filled when he forced 7 missed tackles in Week 1. The backfield is no longer a Mahomes support act.
Kelce Took the YAC Record Gray Was Paid to Chase
Travis Kelce, 36, caught 9 of 11 targets for 101 yards and a 13-yard touchdown, his first score of the season. He entered the night with 6,221 career yards after the catch, 9 behind Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk’s 6,230. Eighteen YAC in the first half pushed him to 6,239. He finished with 67 YAC and 6,288 for his career, the most by any player at any position.
He has now caught a pass in 193 straight games. In Week 1 he had 3 catches for 71 yards, including a 59-yarder that moved him past Jason Witten to 13,073 receiving yards, second among tight ends behind Tony Gonzalez’s 15,127. Mahomes and Kelce still close games the way they did when this offense had no Walker.
Noah Gray does not. The sixth-year tight end, a 2021 fifth-round pick, signed a three-year, $18 million extension in 2024 with $10.016 million guaranteed and a 2026 cap charge of $6.97 million. He has 1 catch for 5 yards through two games, all of it in Week 1, and he did not catch a ball on Sunday. His 2024 career year (40 catches, 437 yards, 5 touchdowns) has not carried. Kansas City paid him to be the second tight end, and maybe the next one. He has been a blocker with a quiet stat line while a 36-year-old keeps setting records.
Tyquan Thornton gave Mahomes another answer. He finished with 4 catches for 86 yards, including a 45-yarder, and he won a contested overtime ball on third-and-long, taking a hit and moving the chains. Rashee Rice had 4 for 83. Xavier Worthy scored from a yard out, and Jalen Royals did the same. Seven Chiefs caught passes. Gray was not among them.
Sneed Lost the Deep Ball the Colts Came to Throw
Sneed is back on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million after the Titans cut him following 12 games and zero interceptions across two injured seasons. He led Kansas City in tackles in the Denver opener, including 33 slot snaps, and he was a full practice participant last week on a sore knee. Indianapolis still drew him up as the man to beat, and Treadwell beat him.
The rest of the secondary held up better than the headline play. Kristian Fulton started and intercepted Jones, taking the ball from Keenan Allen, who finished with 1 catch for 5 yards. Fulton also drew pass-interference flags that could have gone either way. Williams, a 2025 third-round pick, broke up a pass, made a tackle in the backfield, and threw the punch on Treadwell that almost ended the night. Rookie Mansoor Delane, the sixth overall pick in 2026, watched from the sideline after missing most of Week 1, so the room was already short a young starter.
Kansas City traded Trent McDuffie to the Rams rather than pay him, then lost Jaylen Watson to Los Angeles as well. The rebuilt corner group is Fulton, Williams, Sneed, and a first-round rookie who was not active enough to matter. One deep shot to a veteran receiver was enough to put the game in review. That is the clip opposing coordinators will play on a loop, not Williams’s hustle.
Mahomes Is 8-0 in Regular-Season Overtime
Elias Sports Bureau has Mahomes at 8-0 as a starter in regular-season overtime, the best undefeated mark at the position. He is 97-31 as a starter. The last time this team lost an overtime game of any kind was the 2021 AFC Championship against Cincinnati. Sunday was also the first time he had thrown for 300-plus yards since Nov. 23, 2025, another overtime win over these Colts.
He took the field against Denver nine months to the day after tearing his ACL and LCL at the end of a 6-8, 14-game 2025. That night he went 15 of 27 for 184 yards and scrambled 15 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive. Against Indianapolis the deep ball came back, the knee held on a drive-extending run, and he did not turn the ball over. DeForest Buckner got him once. The other sack was the only other time the Colts finished a rush.
Andy Reid already had his 150th win as Chiefs coach from the Denver game. Butker’s four kicks (46, 28, 31, and 40 yards) did the rest. The kicker is the reason an 8-0 overtime quarterback did not need a touchdown in the extra period.
Miami Gets the First Look at Sunday’s Tape
Kansas City visits the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 27. Miami will not need a scouting department to see what Indianapolis did. Taylor’s 24 carries, Jones’s unsacked 210 yards, and one shot at Sneed produced 30 points and a coin-toss away from a road upset. The Colts chose to kick in overtime, then chose a field goal after the 48-yard catch, and still forced Kansas City to win it on the last snap.
Walker will keep getting the ball because the offense is built that way now, and Kelce will keep moving after the catch because that is who he has been for 14 seasons. The question the rest of the AFC just had answered is narrower. If you never let the pass rush start, and you test the corner Kansas City brought back on a prove-it deal, you can take this team to overtime on its own field. Indianapolis did not finish the job. The next club that copies the plan will try to.
