NSE Lists on BSE After Nifty’s Sixth Weekly Loss
NSE’s ₹22,561.57 crore offer closes 21 September and lists on BSE on 24 September, the same day as the Trump-Xi summit, with grey premium near ₹48.
The Nifty 50 ended Friday at 23,346, down 52 points or 0.22 percent, its sixth weekly loss. India VIX still fell 7.33 percent to 11.38.
NSE’s ₹22,561.57 crore share sale closes 21 September and lists on BSE on 24 September, the same Thursday Xi Jinping meets Donald Trump in Washington, with the grey market implying about a 2.7 percent premium.
Nifty’s Sixth Losing Week Still Has a Bid Under It
The Sensex slipped 487 points, or 0.65 percent, to 74,295. Midcap and small-cap indices barely moved, down 0.01 percent and 0.15 percent. Healthcare and FMCG drew bids as defensive, domestic names. Mid- and small-cap IT and consumer durables were sold on global tech spend and weaker discretionary demand.
From the 24,774 swing high on 3 August the Nifty is down about 5.8 percent. It sits below its main moving averages, all of them still pointing down. The week’s range stayed inside 23,000 to 23,600, and Friday’s bounce came after Brent eased from near $110.
WEEK THAT JUST CLOSED
- Nifty 50: 23,346, down 52 points or 0.22 percent on the week.
- Sensex: 74,295, down 487 points or 0.65 percent.
- India VIX: 11.38, down 7.33 percent, below its short-term averages.
- Brent crude: settled at $103.87 a barrel, still above $100.
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said flash PMI readings will gauge activity, while US jobless claims and Federal Reserve commentary will shape the rate path and global liquidity. With geopolitics unresolved and foreign flows still weak, he said the rebound still depends on further easing of those external pressures.
NSE Lists on BSE With the Grey Market Already Quiet
The National Stock Exchange cannot list on itself, so the stock that clears most of India’s cash and derivatives tape will print on BSE. The book is a pure offer for sale of 12,64,36,650 shares, about 5.11 percent of equity, at ₹1,700 to ₹1,785. NSE receives none of the cash. At the cap the franchise is valued at ₹4.42 lakh crore, second to Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore issue in 2024.
Grey-market quotes that sat near ₹192 when the band was set have slid to about ₹48, implying a listing around ₹1,833, or 2.7 percent above the cap. That is a 75 percent fade in the informal premium. Comparing the ₹1,785 ticket with BSE’s share price misses the scale: this issue prices NSE at more than three times BSE. The cheap-looking number is a large company’s share, not a bargain versus a smaller listed peer.

NSE’s red herring and offer documents sit on the exchange’s investor-relations page. Employees get a ₹170 discount on a small reserved slice. State Bank of India is the largest seller, offering up to 1,59,69,410 shares, ahead of Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Aranda Investments (Mauritius) and MS Strategic (Mauritius).
Why Thursday Stacks Xi and the Exchange
Xi’s White House visit on 24 September is his first since 2015 and the second meeting this year with Trump after Beijing in May. Scott Bessent, the US Treasury secretary, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng spent 20 September at JPMorgan’s Manhattan offices with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, teeing up tariffs, rare earths, farm goods and AI ahead of that session.
Bessent told reporters the talks were “very successful” and that both sides had agreed to a US-China AI dialogue with a notification system. Teams had already been working to cut levies on American energy and farm products inside a basket of about $30 billion. Washington delayed a planned 7.5 percent tariff tied to excess-capacity complaints until after the summit. The broader tariff truce runs to 10 November, just after US midterms on 3 November.
For Indian prices the oil channel matters more than the communiqué. China is the largest buyer of Iranian crude. Bessent has said he would raise Iran sanctions with his counterpart. A US naval blockade has already cut crude flows into China, with smaller teapot refiners, about one-third of Chinese refining capacity, most exposed. Saudi crews are restoring an East-West pipeline after drone damage, aiming for roughly half capacity first and the rest over about six weeks, and tankers have kept moving through Hormuz. Kotak Securities has called the near-term oil setup two-sided: a delayed repair, a fresh Hormuz scare or a longer war would reprice the barrel higher; a finished restart and any diplomatic progress would bleed off the risk premium.
Oil and a 19-Year Yield Still Set the Tape
India buys more than 80 percent of the crude it burns. Brent’s drop from near $110 helped Friday’s bounce, but a settle at $103.87 still taxes earnings, the trade gap and the rupee. The rupee fell 0.34 percent on the week to 95.86, a second week of losses, as the dollar index rose 1.13 percent to 100.215. Siddhartha Khemka, head of research for wealth management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, flagged Brent still above $100, a rupee near 96, geopolitics, global yields and foreign flows as the live risks.
On 15 September the US 10-year yield printed 5.041 percent, the highest since 16 July 2007, then cooled toward 5 percent, its first close at that handle since that 2007 stretch. The move was the 10-year yield’s first post-2007 peak of this cycle. The next day the FOMC voted 12-0 to raise the federal funds rate by a quarter point to 3.75 to 4 percent, the first increase since mid-2023. Officials lifted the median year-end funds-rate dot to 4.1 percent from 3.8 percent in June, a path that still prices another hike this year.
Inflation remains elevated. Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee’s 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability.
Kevin Warsh, Federal Reserve Chairman, FOMC statement, 16 September 2026
Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking has warned that another increase this year would keep borrowing costs high and weigh on discretionary spending, technology demand and emerging-market sentiment. Markets will listen for whether Warsh’s hawkish line and Christopher Waller’s easier tone move closer together, with October still finely balanced.
Domestic Institutions Have Been the Floor
Foreign funds sold ₹7,620 crore of Indian shares in the week ended 18 September. Domestic institutions bought ₹11,232 crore, more than covering the outflow. Friday itself flipped to modest foreign buying of about ₹600 crore, with DIIs adding about ₹1,020 crore, after four prior sessions of foreign selling.
CASH FLOWS, WEEK ENDED 18 SEPTEMBER
| Investor | Net (₹ crore) |
|---|---|
| Foreign institutional investors | -7,620 |
| Domestic institutional investors | +11,232 |
| Net (DII minus FII) | +3,612 |
That bid is why a six-week grind has not broken 23,000. It is also why a “bears in charge” tape can coexist with a VIX at 11.38. Foreign money is still the swing factor for the rupee and for any lasting rebound; domestic funds have been the floor under the index. Foreign-exchange reserves fell to $780.78 billion in the week ended 11 September from $785.71 billion. HSBC’s manufacturing PMI eased to 52.8 in August from 53.5, while services rose to 54.1 from 53.3.
The Book, the Anchors and a Thin Retail Line
By Friday evening the issue was subscribed 1.15 times, with QIBs at 1.53 times and non-institutional buyers at about 1.64 times. Retail was 0.71 times. Those figures are not the close; 21 September is the last session, and qualified institutions often load the final day. Anchor names already on the sheet include Life Insurance Corporation of India at ₹400.30 crore, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global at ₹250 crore, the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority at ₹200 crore each, and Fidelity’s India Focus Fund at ₹178.24 crore.
The franchise is real and so is the concentration. Unique registered investors reached 132.37 million as of 30 June 2026, spanning more than 99 percent of Indian postal codes. NSE held a 51.18 percent global share of equity-derivative contracts in fiscal 2026. Transaction charges were 78.65 percent of operating revenue that year, and options alone were 60.22 percent. The top ten trading members supplied 46.78 percent of operating revenue. Profit after tax was ₹10,302 crore in fiscal 2026, down from ₹12,188 crore the year before.
WHAT THE RHP PUTS IN WRITING
- Volume risk: Fees fall if cash and derivatives turnover drops, because most revenue is transaction-based.
- Product mix: Options are more than three-fifths of operating revenue, so a SEBI rule change on index derivatives hits the P&L directly.
- Member concentration: Ten brokers account for nearly 47 percent of operating revenue.
- No new cash: Every rupee of the issue goes to selling shareholders, not to the exchange.
Those points are in the exchange’s red herring prospectus. A crowded IPO calendar sits around the listing: Varmora Granito’s ₹708 crore issue opens 22 September, Elevate Campuses’ ₹2,100 crore issue opens 23 September, and Moneyview opens 24 September with a ₹750 crore fresh issue plus an offer for sale. They will not set the tape the way NSE’s debut can.
Support Sits at 23,000, With VIX Already Low
Weekly options still cluster call open interest at 23,700, with nearer call walls at 23,500 and 23,400. Put interest is heaviest at 23,300, then at 23,000. Technicians want a decisive move out of 23,000-23,600. Above 23,600 the map opens toward 23,800-25,000. Below 23,000 the same map talks about forced selling. Momentum readings have softened from the worst of the decline, which is why a VIX at 11.38 looks like comfort. It is comfort that can reverse if oil or the 10-year backs up while Thursday’s two events are on the screens.
THE WEEK ON THE CALENDAR
- 21 September: NSE IPO closes; August infrastructure output is due.
- 22 September: NSE allotment; Varmora Granito opens.
- 23 September: India flash PMI; Elevate Campuses opens; several SME and mainboard listings.
- 24 September: NSE lists on BSE; Trump-Xi meeting in Washington; Moneyview and A-One Steels open.
- 25 September: India’s foreign-exchange reserves print.
US weekly jobs, new-home sales, durable-goods orders, Michigan inflation expectations, global flash PMIs and China’s loan prime rate also land in the same window. Nair’s advice was to stay selective in names with visible earnings, solid balance sheets and a margin of safety. Khemka’s list of risks has not been retired: oil, the rupee, yields and foreign flows.
Thursday puts India’s largest exchange on a rival’s board while the two presidents meet, with a grey premium of about ₹48 and a fear gauge already at 11.38. Brent is still above $100 and the US 10-year has only just come off a 19-year high. That is the week the index has to trade.
