The 2026 Hot List Was Written by Constraints
The 2026 hot list of gadgets rewards kitchen-table factories, a drone that beat a sales ban, and a $599 MacBook that now costs $699.
A 2026 hot list of gadgets opened with laser cutters and a UV printer, then named a gimbal camera U.S. shops cannot stock. Flagship phones still made the cut. They did not open the show.
The testers who lived with this hardware spent 2026 watching three forces rewrite a normal awards sheet: a sales lock on new DJI radios, a memory shortage that added $100 to Apple’s cheapest Mac, and a wave of desktop tools that print, cut, and etch on a kitchen table.
Maker Tools Opened the 2026 Hot List
Chris Burns, who ran the tool tests, did not hide his surprise at the xTool F2. It is a laser cutter that etches paper, wood, and plexiglass, which is familiar. The chassis is not. A handle on top and a door below let you pick the machine up and set it against a wall, so the bed can meet a wheelbarrow handle if the cord will reach. Burns flagged that the work area looks small next to xTool’s giant P2, and that is the point. This one is built to move.
Andy Zahn’s printer pick, the eufyMake E1, is the other half of that workshop. It is a UV printer cheap enough, in this class, to live in a spare room, and it will print on flat stock and, with a rotary, on curves. It can lay down 3D texture. Zahn’s warning is the running cost. The machine drinks ink even while idle, and that ink is not cheap, so you either sell what you make or you treat the E1 as a hobby with a meter on it. After launch perks closed on June 1, the U.S. basic bundle sat at $2,499.
THREE MACHINES THAT PRINT, CUT, AND ETCH
- xTool F2: A portable laser with a carry handle, meant to be set against the thing you are marking rather than parked as a bench monument.
- eufyMake E1: A home UV printer that can hit hard surfaces and curves, then bills you again every time the cartridges run.
- xTool M2: A $599 starting box with magnetic heads, so one chassis can print in color and cut with a diode laser.
The M2 is the machine that makes the first three slots feel like a category, not a quirk. Burns called it part of a new wave of craft tools that refuse the old one-job-per-box rule. Magnetic heads swap in a CMYK inkjet and 10W or 20W diode laser, plus a 3W IR module, and the 10W standalone is listed at $599. xTool’s earlier M1 Ultra can take more heads in a similar footprint. The M2 undercuts it. Burns wanted a public promise that more modules will keep coming. For the money, he still found it capable the day it left the box.
The Gimbal Camera U.S. Shops Cannot Stock
Zahn’s only real critique of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P is that you cannot buy it in the United States. He still named it the best gimbal camera of the year. The Pocket 3 remains in his own kit because the autofocus will hold a face, then jump to an object shoved at the lens without a hunt. The 4P keeps that habit, adds a larger primary sensor, and adds a second camera so the same body can work as a small two-lens video kit.
DJI’s European handheld lineup prices the dual-lens Osmo Pocket 4P from €599, with the single-lens Pocket 4 from €499. The wide camera is a 1-inch sensor with a claimed 17 stops of range. The second camera is not a twin. It is a 60 mm f/1.8 medium-telephoto on a 1/1.28-inch chip with 14 stops, which is the distinction grey-market spec sheets keep flattening. DJI also claims a charge to 80 percent in 18 minutes.
The gap is not taste. On December 22, 2025, the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, in notice DA-25-1086, added foreign-made drones to the Covered List and pulled in communications and video-surveillance gear named under Section 1709 of the FY2025 National Defense Authorization Act, a list that reaches DJI and Autel. Covered gear cannot get new equipment authorization, which is the paper you need to import, market, and sell most radios. Older models that already had approval, including the Pocket 3, can still be sold. The 4P cannot go through official U.S. channels.
Osmo Pocket 4P and Osmo Pocket 4 were not released in the United States when the products were launched globally. DJI does not offer or sell these products through its official U.S. channels and did not distribute these products in the U.S. market. Any products that may be offered by independent third-party sellers are not products sold or distributed by DJI in the U.S. DJI has no involvement in those third-party sales.

Listings still turn up on big U.S. storefronts because some units are already inside the country. They come without DJI’s U.S. warranty and without a company that will admit it sold them. Best Buy’s legal shelf in this class is still the Pocket 3. That is how a hot-list winner becomes a camera you praise in print and cannot put in a cart.
A 249-Gram Drone That Cleared the Ban
The consumer-drone slot went to the Antigravity A1, a 360-degree aircraft incubated by Insta360 and put on sale on December 4, 2025. Standard bundle price is $1,599, with the Infinity kit at $1,999, goggles and a motion controller in the box. With the standard battery it weighs 249 grams, under the 250-gram line that triggers recreational FAA registration. The high-capacity pack lifts it to 291 grams and stretches flight from 24 minutes to 39, which also drags Remote ID into the picture.
Zahn’s case for it is the camera, not a loyalty to quadcopters. Dual lenses film the whole sphere, then the software can hide the airframe, so you pick a view after the flight. The pilot’s view is not locked to the nose. You look around while you fly, with motion controls instead of a classic stick radio, which is why he says novices can fly shots that used to mean an FPV apprenticeship.
The A1 is also a calendar trick. Antigravity’s U.S. paperwork moved on November 18, 2025, and the drone was on Best Buy shelves before the December 22 Covered List closed the window on new foreign UAS approvals. Michael Shabun, Antigravity’s U.S. chief executive, said the company had sold 30,000 units and reached Costco by mid-January. He also said later aircraft may need U.S. factories if the ban holds. The A1 is less “the drone of 2026” than the drone that still has a receipt.
The $599 MacBook That Became $699
Apple announced the MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, as its cheapest laptop, a 13-inch aluminum Mac on an A18 Pro chip with a starting price of just $599, or $499 for education, with customer availability on March 11. John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, called it a laptop built to be affordable for more people. Eric Hamilton, who handled the budget-laptop brief, still likes the screen, the aluminum, and the single-core punch. He also lists the traps: soldered 8GB of memory, a slower SSD than other Macs, and multi-core results that keep it on mail, notes, and light work.
On June 25, Apple raised Mac and iPad prices and put the blame on memory and storage that AI data centers had pulled out of the PC channel. The Neo’s base price moved $100 to $699. Education moved $100 to $599, which is the old public sticker. Hamilton called that bump a bitter pill on a machine that had been a hit.
The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage. We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly. We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac.

APPLE’S JUNE 25 MEMORY HIKES
| Product | Before June 25 | After the hike |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo (base) | $599 | $699 |
| MacBook Neo (education) | $499 | $599 |
| iPad Air (128GB) | $599 | $749 |
The same day, the 128GB iPad Air moved $150 to $749, which is now the open price on the 11-inch Wi-Fi model testers picked as the best tablet, with the 13-inch from $949. Hamilton’s other premium-laptop pick, the ASUS ProArt PX13 GoPro Edition, sits at $2,999 with 128GB of unified memory, a tablet hinge, a stylus, and a hardshell case that doubles as a stand. It is the un-taxed-looking opposite of the Neo: you pay the creator tax up front, in dollars, not in a mid-year letter about DRAM.
GoPro Put a 1-Inch Sensor Behind MFT Glass
While DJI’s new pocket gimbal sat offshore, GoPro used a 50MP 1-inch sensor to take both camera slots. Zahn called the Mission 1 Pro an enormous jump over earlier GoPros in low light, still tougher and more water resistant than the line that made the brand, and still the mount king. It keeps magnetic connections, the old action-cam fingers, and a 1/4-20 thread, which is why he uses it as a second body on paid shoots. DJI and Insta360, in his view, still lean too hard on magnets alone.
The Mission 1 Pro ILS is the same sensor in a stranger body. GoPro’s August 26 newsroom note billed it as the company’s first interchangeable-lens cinema camera, a 197 g weatherproof brick with a Micro Four Thirds mount, 8K60 and 4K240, HyperSmooth, and a $699.99 sticker, or $599.99 for subscribers. Lenses are extra. There is no electronic iris or autofocus handshake, so you focus by hand on a small screen. It is not a dive camera. Zahn’s line is that the footage stops looking like an action cam while keeping the digital tricks that made GoPro a default verb, if you will put in the practice.
Travis Langness’s 360 pick, the Insta360 X6, is the same 1-inch-sensor fashion in a shorter body, $150 above the X5, with a low-light bump that he puts on even footing with DJI’s Osmo 360. The X5 remains the save-a-bit choice. Put those cameras next to the Pocket 4P and the A1, and 2026’s imaging list is a 1-inch race plus a legal map.
Privacy Glass and a $499 Pixel
Phones did not vanish. They just look like phones. Chris Davies picked the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra for a Privacy Display that can hide the screen from the next seat, plus a faster chip, better cameras, longer battery life, and the S Pen. Rahul Srinivas’s foldable is the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a wider, stockier, lighter compact fold that Samsung put below the Z Fold 8 Ultra, with a 5.5-inch cover and a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner panel against the Ultra’s 8-inch sheet. He says that size made it a content screen instead of a window manager, and that Apple’s iPhone Duo is already crowding the same aisle.
Google took the middle and the floor. The Pixel 11 starts at $899, which is $200 under the $1,099 Pixel 11 Pro, with the Tensor G6, Titan M3, a 6.3-inch OLED, 256GB, 12GB of memory, a 30-hour battery claim, Android 17, and seven years of updates. Hamilton wrote that its camera can hang with a Pixel 10 Pro, and that a Pixel 10 owner may not feel a pull. The Pixel 10a is $499 with the older Tensor G4, 8GB of memory, a 5,100 mAh cell that now takes 30W charge, a 6.3-inch OLED at 3,000 nits, Android 16, and the same seven-year clock. Adam Doud called it déjà vu on a budget. Hamilton called it the right ticket if your Pixel is old, not last year’s.
Jack Picone’s watch, the Pixel Watch 5, is Google’s most expensive wearable, with a 3,000-nit face, a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, up to 36 hours in his use, a 45-minute recharge, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. A Trends feature for monthly health shifts was still unreleased when he wrote. He found Gemini on the watch half-baked and still called it the watch to buy. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 won earbuds on sound and foam-tip comfort, with a messy case and no hearing-aid mode. Daniel Trock’s $199 Nothing Headphone (a) won the over-ear slot on ANC, 75 hours with noise cancelling on, and 135 with it off.
What Keeps Costing Money After Checkout
Sticker prices on this list are a down payment. Zahn’s E1 warning is the cleanest version: the tool is marvelous, and you keep paying. xTool’s cheaper M2 ink and modular heads move the same problem around. Jordan Wirth’s $99 Xteink X4 Pro is the software version of that bill. It is a pocket e-reader with a light, a touchscreen, and almost double the older X4’s battery at a lower weight, and it will magnetically stick to a phone. It has no store. Kindle buyers have to strip DRM or buy files that were never locked. Wirth still called the nits small, because the books do not vanish on a company’s say-so.
THE YEAR THE RULES MOVED
- November 18, 2025: Antigravity’s A1 clears FCC processing, five days after the agency is back at work.
- December 4, 2025: The A1 goes on sale at $1,599, including goggles and a grip, and lands on Best Buy shelves.
- December 22, 2025: The FCC adds foreign UAS and Section 1709 gear to the Covered List, freezing new DJI authorizations.
- March 4, 2026: Apple unveils the MacBook Neo at $599, with education at $499.
- June 25, 2026: Apple lifts the Neo to $699 and the 128GB iPad Air to $749, citing memory demand from AI data centers.
- July 30, 2026: The Osmo Pocket 4P goes on global sale outside the United States at €599.
- August 26, 2026: GoPro opens pre-orders for the Mission 1 Pro ILS at $699.99, with September retail.
Chris Davies’s home-audio pick, the $299 Sonos Play, is a portable speaker with replaceable batteries and a later software trick that lets a pair act as rear surrounds. His car refresh, the 2028 Volvo XC60 T8 Long Range plug-in hybrid, claims up to 78 miles of electric range, 455 horsepower, and 4.5 seconds to 60 mph, with U.S. arrivals in early 2027. Andy Zahn’s $2,299 Pimax Dream Air, at about 170 grams with 7680 x 3552 micro-OLED panels, and Chris Burns’s $3,300 Anker Soundcore Nebula X1S projector sit at the other end of the same pattern: you can buy the object if you can stand the number.
xTool still lists the M2’s 10W standalone at $599, and the product page still says an order placed today ships in a business day. That is the unglamorous end of a hot list built by people who could not always buy the thing they liked.
