Qualcomm’s Dual Flagship Chips Split Android’s Top End
Qualcomm’s 2nm Elite and Extreme chips force a two-tier flagship stack, with Xiaomi selling both and Motorola bringing Extreme to US shelves.
Qualcomm put two flagship phone chips on stage in Maui on September 22, 2026, both on 2nm, both with 5 GHz prime cores. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is the yearly successor. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits above it as a paid extra tier for gaming, video, and on-device AI.
Xiaomi is already selling both chips as the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in China. Motorola is taking only Extreme to North America in November as the Signature 27, walking into the gap OnePlus left in July.
Why Qualcomm Built Two Flagship Chips
For years the autumn Snapdragon was one chip, then a slightly hotter bin for a partner later. That model is gone. Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, used the Maui keynote to sell a “multi-flagship strategy,” and the company’s press note frames the pair as two new flagship mobile platforms rather than one chip with a faster twin.
Today marks a milestone as we introduce not one, but two new flagship mobile platforms, delivering agentic AI experiences that are immediate, personal, and adaptive. By designing two innovative platforms, we’re giving OEMs greater choice.
Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets, Qualcomm Technologies press note
Lekha Motiwala, senior director of product management at Qualcomm, put the split in plainer terms after the show. Some phone makers want the peak of the process node, she said, and others want a flagship they can put in more models. Ellie Fortin, a Qualcomm spokeswoman, called Elite Gen 6 the core flagship tier and Extreme the “most aspirational” stack for AI, games, and video.
Both chips share the same Oryon layout: two prime cores at 5.0 GHz and six performance cores at 4.0 GHz, with 16 MB of Oryon Flex Cache. Qualcomm calls that the world’s first mobile CPU to hit 5 GHz. Last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 topped out at 4.6 GHz on 3nm. Memory support now runs to 24 GB of LPDDR5X or LPDDR6, and storage is UFS 5.0. The X105 modem is rated at 14.8 Gbps down and 4.2 Gbps up. FastConnect 8800 is listed at 11.6 Gbps and brings Wi-Fi 8.
Two platforms. One bold vision for the future of mobile.

The commercial logic sits under the clocks. Smart Analytics Global, which was in the room, maps Elite Gen 6 toward phones with wholesale prices from about $600, and Extreme toward the $1,000-plus band, with a chip price gap near $100. A 2nm wafer is not a 3nm wafer. Two SKUs let a brand raise the top phone without dragging every “flagship” up with it.
The Extra Silicon Extreme Keeps for Itself
Day-to-day apps will not advertise this split. The deltas Qualcomm published are all against Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and they only open up in games, long sessions, and capture. Elite Gen 6 is the volume chip. Extreme is the one Motorola, Xiaomi’s Pro Max, Honor, and iQOO are using to sell a higher shelf.
ELITE GEN 6 VS EXTREME GEN 6, AGAINST LAST YEAR
| Claim vs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 | Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU speed / CPU efficiency | 10% / 37% | 13% / 37% |
| GPU speed / GPU efficiency | 35% / 40% | 44% / 40% |
| NPU speed / AI per watt | 14% / 20% | 35% / 33% |
| Video capture | 8K at 30 fps | 8K at 60 fps |
| 4K slow motion | 120 fps | 240 fps |
| GPU extras | Standard Adreno | Matrix cores, Neural Fusion, 18 MB HPM |
| Hexagon shared memory | Base Gen 6 | 50% more than last year |
The GPU gap is the one buyers will feel if they feel anything. Extreme adds Adreno matrix cores, Adreno Neural Fusion, and 18 MB of dedicated high-performance memory. Qualcomm’s Dragon Alley demo pegs Neural Fusion’s super-resolution and frame generation at up to a 40% cut in rendering power when a game supports it. Extreme also takes Advanced Professional Video capture and H.266 decode. Elite Gen 6 does not get those camera extras on the spec sheet Qualcomm is using to sell the upper tier.
WHAT ONLY EXTREME LISTS
- Matrix cores: Dedicated GPU AI blocks for Neural Fusion super-resolution and frame generation.
- 18 MB HPM: On-chip graphics memory Extreme uses as a selling point over Elite Gen 6.
- 8K at 60 fps: Capture ceiling; Elite Gen 6 stops at 8K at 30 fps.
- 4K at 240 fps: Slow motion; Elite Gen 6 is listed at 4K at 120 fps.
- APV codec: Pro video format called out on Extreme, not on the standard Gen 6 brief.
- NPU memory: 50% more Hexagon shared memory than the previous generation.
Part numbers make the split hard to paper over. Elite Gen 6 is SM8950. Extreme is SM8975. Same clocks, different package, different bill. Xiaomi putting both in one family is the proof Qualcomm wanted on day two of the show.
Xiaomi Already Sells Both Tiers in China
The Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max opened in China on September 23, 2026, a day after the Maui stage. Xiaomi called them the first phones on “Snapdragon Dual 8 Elites,” which is marketing speak for the thing that actually changed: one brand, two chips, two prices, same week.
The 18 Pro takes Elite Gen 6 and a 6.4-inch LTPO AMOLED. The 18 Pro Max takes Extreme and a 6.9-inch panel. Both run 1-120 Hz and 4,000 nits peak. Cameras match: two 200-megapixel Leica sensors and a 50-megapixel ultrawide, plus a 50-megapixel front camera. The split is silicon, battery, and glass, not the lens list.
XIAOMI 18 PRO SERIES, CHINA LAUNCH
- 18 Pro chip: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in the smaller 6.4-inch body.
- 18 Pro Max chip: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 in the 6.9-inch body.
- Batteries: 7,000 mAh in the Pro, 8,500 mAh in the Pro Max, the Max with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.
- Rear OLEDs: 2.7-inch on the Pro, 2.9-inch on the Pro Max, both 120 Hz.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, wrote that the 18 Pro series “goes global this year” after buyers outside China asked for the Pro models they did not get last round. The 17 Pro family stayed in China. Xu Fei, Xiaomi’s chief marketing officer, repeated the global line. No country list has followed, and the United States is not on any slide. Xiaomi still has no US carrier deal and no branded US stores, so “global” here means Europe, India, and the usual import paths until someone prints a market list.
The design argument is already louder than the chip argument. A transparent red Special Edition is the photo people keep putting next to Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro, and the rear OLED is the bit you cannot fake in a render. Motorola is not competing with that silhouette. It is competing for a US checkout.
A Rear OLED and a Hardware Privacy Filter
Xiaomi kept the rear screen it introduced on the 17 Pro and gave it more to do. It is a viewfinder for the triple rear cameras, a slot for widgets and Xiao AI mini-apps, a place for custom cards, and a cute but thin demo layer of generated animals that hands-on units actually ran. Answering a call or skipping a track from the back is the useful part. The rest is still a second display looking for a job.
The front glass is the more serious change. Xiaomi’s Smart Privacy Screen uses alternating standard pixels and baffled privacy pixels, a 1:1 hardware mix, so the panel can narrow the viewing cone without a clip-on filter. Xiaomi says brightness off to the side falls to about 1% past 60 degrees when the mode is on, which is a dark rectangle to the person in the next seat. Samsung put a similar hardware privacy panel on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Xiaomi put it on both Pro phones, not only the Max, and added software Samsung did not ship in the same form.
HOW XIAOMI TURNS THE FILTER ON
- Per app: Privacy can follow a single app into notifications, floating windows, and split view instead of blanking the whole panel.
- By place: Location rules can force the mode at work, in an airport, or in an elevator, and ease it at home.
- By camera: The selfie camera can flag a person at the shoulder and suggest turning the filter on.
- By button: A side AI key toggles the mode without digging through settings.
Xiaomi also rebuilt the subpixel layout as a full RGB stripe it calls SuperPixel 2.0, and it claims the Pro Max reaches about 9.5 million subpixels so color holds up when the privacy pixels are idle. Hands-on notes from Maui said the hit was mild with the filter on, and that it still needs time on a desk. The trade-off is not free. Off axis, Xiaomi’s privacy screen viewing angles go dark on purpose, which is the feature working, and also a cost if you share the phone across a table.
That is the Xiaomi bet in one line: a second OLED people will photograph, and a privacy panel that is no longer a Samsung Ultra exclusive. Neither of those needs Extreme silicon. The Pro Max still pays for Extreme because Qualcomm now has a higher SKU to put in the bigger phone.
Motorola Puts Extreme on US Shelves
Motorola unveiled the Signature 27 on the same Maui stage, and it is the first phone that was introduced with Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company is not splitting a Pro and a Pro Max. It put Extreme in the one ultra-premium candy-bar it wants Americans to notice, after the first Signature stayed overseas.
The camera pitch is a 50-megapixel Sony LYTIA 910 main sensor and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera, with Super Zoom Pro listed up to 100x using generative AI. A Video Enhancement Engine is supposed to ride color and exposure while you record. The body uses aerospace-grade aluminum and glass-ceramic, with a Tactical Weave finish Motorola ties to automotive and sportswear. Cooling is a diamond-infused thermal gel and a 3D vapor chamber, which is how Motorola plans to keep a 5 GHz Extreme chip from falling off after ten minutes of games. A six-antenna array is part of the radio story.
Revealing our most advanced smartphone yet at #SnapdragonSummit, motorola signature 27. Here’s what to look forward to:
– Our best camera system yet.
– The only smartphone in the market to feature audio by Bang & Olufsen.
– Unprecedented speeds with @Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme… pic.twitter.com/hGuz5Z9mmd— motorola (@Moto) September 22, 2026
Audio is the badge Motorola cannot copy from Xiaomi’s rear glass. On September 21, 2026, a day before the chip event, Motorola announced a multi-year global partnership with Bang & Olufsen. The Signature 27 is the first Motorola phone with Audio by Bang & Olufsen. Motorola’s own launch post called it the only smartphone on the market with that audio stack. Sound modes are listed for music, movies, games, and podcasts.
Bang & Olufsen has spent a century bringing together acoustic excellence, exceptional craftsmanship and iconic design. Combining that expertise with our approach to mobile technology and design gives us an opportunity to make sound a much more intentional part of the Motorola experience.

Software support is the other adult claim. Motorola is promising seven OS upgrades and up to seven years of security updates from the global launch date, which matches the term Samsung and Google already use as table stakes. Two finishes are listed: PANTONE Coal Smoke in Tactical Weave and PANTONE Capulet Green in a brushed, textile-like surface. Motorola’s Canadian product page says more is coming in November. The US site has a registration page. There is still no price.
After OnePlus Left, Motorola Walked In
Motorola’s US flagship problem was not a missing 200-megapixel lens. It was the years it spent winning on Razr folds and midrange bars while the high end stayed an import rumor. The first Signature never had a US SKU. Signature 27 is named for the last two digits of 2027, and Motorola says that numbering will stick on later generations, which is a small tell that this is meant as a line, not a one-off show phone.
The hole in American shops is specific. On July 16, 2026, OnePlus said it will no longer launch new products in Europe and North America. The OnePlus 15 is the last new OnePlus phone those regions get. Existing units keep support, and OxygenOS is slated to give way to Oppo’s ColorOS with Android 17, with a decline and rollback path. OnePlus went from 1 million US smartphone shipments in 2019 to just under 130,000 in 2025, and from 1.8% of the US market in 2021 to 0.1% in 2025. Carriers had already shrunk the shelf. The July note made the exit official.
Qualcomm still listed OnePlus among nine brands that will ship the new platforms, alongside HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi. A OnePlus 16 on Extreme is confirmed for the markets OnePlus still serves. The US buyer who used to default to OnePlus does not get that phone. Motorola is the company putting Extreme on a November US calendar with seven years of updates and a B&O logo, which is a different product than a “flagship killer” but occupies the same empty hook at the carrier store.
Xiaomi’s more unusual hardware, the rear OLED and the privacy pixels, still has no US carrier path. Importing an 18 Pro Max will be possible for people who already do that. It is not the same as Motorola printing a North American page and a November window. Qualcomm’s two-chip stack lets those two outcomes sit side by side: Extreme as a China/global camera phone with a second screen, and Extreme as a US Motorola with Danish audio and a vapor chamber.
Honor and iQOO Are Already on Extreme Silicon
The partner list did not wait for November. Honor put the Magic 9 Pro Max on Extreme in Beijing on September 28, 2026. iQOO opened the iQOO 16 in China on September 29, 2026, on the same chip, with an iQOO Pad Ultra also named. RedMagic has pointed at a 12 Pro+. Those are not Maui demos. They are the second-order result of Qualcomm selling two flagships at once: the Extreme badge is already a wave, not a Motorola exclusive, even if Motorola was first on the Summit stage.
Xiaomi still has the receipt that matters for the split itself. The 18 Pro Max was on sale in China on September 23, so Extreme silicon reached a shop before Motorola’s November US window. Motorola had the reveal. Xiaomi had the carton. Honor and iQOO are filling the weeks in between.
FROM MAUI TO A SHOP SHELF
- September 21, 2026: Motorola and Bang & Olufsen announce the multi-year audio deal that the Signature 27 will wear first.
- September 22, 2026: Qualcomm unveils Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 in Maui, and Motorola shows the Signature 27 on Extreme.
- September 23, 2026: Xiaomi starts selling the 18 Pro on Elite Gen 6 and the 18 Pro Max on Extreme in China.
- September 28, 2026: Honor announces the Magic 9 Pro Max on Extreme in Beijing.
- September 29, 2026: iQOO opens the iQOO 16 in China on Extreme.
- November 2026: Motorola’s Canadian product page times Signature 27 availability, with a US registration page already live and no price yet.
Elite Gen 6 will be the chip in most “flagship” Android phones this season. Extreme is the $100-class silicon upcharge that turns one autumn keynote into two SKUs, two camera phones at Xiaomi, and a Motorola that can finally stand on a US shelf with a straight face. The Signature 27 still has no US price. The 18 Pro series is already in Chinese shops, with a global date Xiaomi has not pinned to a week or a country list.
