Xbox Has Kojima, but Not a Locked Exclusive
Xbox now publishes Kojima’s Physint after Sony walked away, yet exclusivity is still unconfirmed as further job cuts are described for the same week.
Xbox will publish Hideo Kojima’s Physint after Sony cancelled the game in mid-June. He closed Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show broadcast on 17 September as the new face of that deal.
He still cannot say whether Physint is an Xbox exclusive, and a person briefed on the plans said hundreds more Xbox jobs are due to go in the week of 21 September.
Sony Cancelled Physint in June, Then Went Quiet
This was a rescue, not a raid. Kojima said PlayStation Studios told him in mid-June, on a Zoom call, that it would cancel Physint. He had been assured the project was safe. His first thought, he said later, was what he would do with the studio.
“We didn’t understand the reason. I didn’t have any anger or sadness,” he said. Physint and the horror game OD were the only two titles in flight. Lose one contract, and he feared he would have to cut everyone on Physint, or watch cash run out.
He spent the next three months hunting a publisher that could cover tech and marketing, and he pitched Physint as more than a game, with movies, dramas, anime, TV, comics and music attached. Xbox was already on OD. He said the first reaction to the Physint pitch was that it was fantastic, and that they had never seen a pitch like it.
On 9 September, Xbox and Kojima Productions said they would expand their partnership to publish Physint. CEO Asha Sharma called it a choice about where creators bring ideas to life. The same note added film and television to the work. PlayStation said it had stepped away and that the relationship remains strong. Kojima said Sony has not contacted him since, and that the two sides are not in a dispute after 30 years together.
He posted the timeline himself the next morning.

Xbox replied on the same thread that it is an honor to build the future together. Staff at Kojima Productions, he said, learned of the switch one day before it went public.
THE PHYSINT HANDOFF
- Mid-June 2026: PlayStation Studios tells Kojima on a Zoom call that Physint is cancelled.
- June to September 2026: Kojima Productions searches for a new partner and pitches Physint as a wider IP.
- 9 September 2026: Xbox announces it will publish Physint alongside OD, with film and television work attached.
- 17 September 2026: Kojima closes Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show broadcast with a Physint cast reveal and an OD capture update.
- 20 September 2026: Kojima Productions says the studio is healthy and profitable and that its PlayStation relationship remains strong.
- 21 September 2026: Kojima says he does not know if Physint will be exclusive, and plans for further Xbox job cuts are described for that week.
He has said he did not want a repeat of P.T., the playable teaser that vanished when a publishing relationship collapsed. Xbox catching the game keeps the lights on. It does not, by itself, tell anyone where they will be able to play it.
Kojima Still Does Not Know If Physint Is Exclusive
Asked whether Physint will stay off PlayStation now that Xbox is paying the bills, Kojima declined to answer as a platform holder would.
I don’t know the answer to that, that would be a question for Xbox. But I don’t know for sure. In previous updates from Xbox, I thought that they have this kind of stance where they want to deliver to as many gamers as possible, no matter what the platform is. I think all of that will be announced at a later time. I’m not sure yet, and I can’t really say.
Hideo Kojima, game creator and founder, Kojima Productions
That line sits badly next to the TGS staging. Sharma has spent her first months as CEO, after Phil Spencer retired in February, talking up a return to exclusives. She has already locked Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as console exclusives for 2027, and she has said a platform needs exclusive content and services. She has also said Xbox is the number two publisher in the world, and that games should reach large audiences while the business is still unhealthy.
Sony’s reported worry, which Kojima Productions has not confirmed, was budget, missed dates, and a game that might not stay exclusive. An Xbox spokesperson later called betting on Kojima an easy call, and said the company believes in OD, Physint, and the growing partnership. Easy is not the same as locked.
If Sharma wants Kojima as a reason to buy the next box, she has to say the games will not ship on the old rival. Until that sentence exists, Xbox has a famous partner and an open platform question. Death Stranding 2 remains a PlayStation game. The first Death Stranding later came to Xbox. That history is the pattern Kojima himself pointed at when he talked about reaching as many players as possible.
Hundreds More Xbox Jobs Are on the Block This Week
On 6 July, Sharma sent staff a note she also posted publicly. She called it the most significant restructure in Xbox history. She said she had decided to reduce the team by approximately 3,200 throughout fiscal 2027, including about 1,600 role cuts that day, with four studios leaving for new management.
THE JULY RESET
- Headcount: About 3,200 Xbox roles through fiscal 2027, which ends 30 June 2027, described as about 20 percent of the division.
- First day: About 1,600 jobs cut on 6 July 2026, with about 1,600 still to come.
- Studios leaving: Double Fine and Compulsion Games go independent with their IP; Ninja Theory and Undead Labs go to new owners with funding to finish Senua and State of Decay 3.
- Still in play: Arkane Lyon entered works-council consultation in France over strategic options, and was not listed among the four departures.
Sharma wrote that the business was not healthy, and that platform teams were 40 percent larger than at the start of the generation even as the player base and playtime had declined. Cuts were also due across Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios. She said publicly announced games were not being cancelled as part of that round. OD, already in house, was treated as safe.
On 21 September, a person briefed on the plans said Xbox intends to cut hundreds of jobs in that same week and to consolidate several studios. An Xbox spokesperson did not immediately respond. Those hundreds, if they land, sit inside the remaining 1,600 already flagged through 30 June 2027. They are not a fresh total on top of 3,200. They are the next slice of a reset that is still running while Kojima is being walked out as the new face.
Putting a prestige publisher deal on a TGS stage in the same week as another cut round is the contradiction the hardware faithful keep circling. The banner is expensive. The people who would have shipped the quieter games between now and Helix are the ones leaving.
Two Games, a Movie Plan, and No Engine Yet
Physint is early. Kojima said the plot and concept are written, storyboards exist, 3D modelling has started, and actors are being scanned, but he has not chosen an engine. He is still experimenting. A shift off Sony’s Decima tech was the obvious guess after the split. He has not made that guess official.
In 2025 he said Physint was still five or six years away, which would put it in 2030 or 2031. At TGS he called it the culmination of more than 40 years of his career, and said it would redefine action-espionage. Bill Skarsgård will play the lead, joining Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. New key art came from a photoshoot Kojima said he took himself.
OD is the nearer of the two, and it is getting less oxygen. Announced in 2022, it is a horror experiment Kojima has said will test the thresholds of fear. He told the TGS audience that production is on schedule after performance capture and ADR stopped during the 2025 SAG-AFTRA strike. Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier are on the cast. He said they had delivered intense performances, then promised more news down the line. No date.
The film and television clause is the part of the Xbox offer Sony did not match in public. Kojima said the biggest difference was that Xbox was not thinking of just funding a game, and was thinking about movies and anime, about creating a new IP. That is why the deal looks larger than a boxed exclusive. It is also why a platform win is not automatic. An IP that is meant to live in other media can travel. A console needs the opposite pressure.
On 20 September, after a report on budget, dates, and Death Stranding’s returns spread through the trade, Kojima Productions said none of those claims came from an official source, and asked fans to treat them with scepticism. The studio said it remains a studio is in a healthy, profitable state, that Physint continues with Xbox, and that the PlayStation relationship remains strong. It did not walk through the budget line by line.
What Helix Can Ship Before Physint
Project Helix, the next Xbox, is still a codename. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of next generation, told developers on 11 March that Helix is a custom AMD system-on-chip, co-designed for the next DirectX, and that it is built to play Xbox console games and PC games. He said it would deliver an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing. Alpha versions of the hardware, he said, go to developers beginning in 2027. There is no consumer ship date.
Sharma has since called Helix a family of devices, and has declined to say whether a disc drive is part of the plan. She has talked about efficiency and affordability as console prices climb. A machine whose alpha kits land in 2027 is the box Physint is actually aimed at. OD may arrive earlier in that cycle. Neither is a Series X rescue pack.
The current hardware still has to sell the years in between. Sharma’s own exclusive list for that gap is short and specific: Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution in 2027. Playground’s Fable reboot is due on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in early 2027, so the first new Fable is already a shared game. A faster sequel, if this one lands, is the exclusive that would actually sit on Helix. Halo remains the open wound. Five years on from the last mainline entry, the studio has moved to Unreal Engine and changed leadership, and the next campaign still has no public shape.
Kojima’s two games cannot cover that stretch. They were never going to. They are a late-cycle prestige bet on a family of devices that has not been priced, dated, or shown.
The Elder Scrolls Question Sharma Will Not Answer
If any single Xbox game could force a hardware decision, it is The Elder Scrolls 6. At Gamescom, Sharma was asked whether keeping it off PlayStation was a priority. She smiled and said it is a beautiful game. She has seen a demo. She has also said exclusives have to be weighed against a business that is not healthy, and that Xbox is starting with one or two signature exclusives and will look to do more if that business improves.
That is the real lever. Kojima brings a face, a TGS clip, a film clause, and two games that are still in experiment and capture. Bethesda brings a series people have waited on since 2018. Sharma has not said which way she will go.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY LOCKED
| Game | Who is paying | Console lock | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physint | Xbox, after Sony cancelled | Unconfirmed | 2030 or 2031, per Kojima in 2025 |
| OD | Xbox | Unconfirmed | Sooner than Physint, no date |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Xbox | Console exclusive | 2027 |
| Clockwork Revolution | Xbox | Console exclusive | 2027 |
| Fable reboot | Playground / Xbox | Series X and PlayStation 5 | Early 2027 |
| The Elder Scrolls 6 | Bethesda / Xbox | Unconfirmed | Unannounced |
Obsidian is also making a new Fallout under Josh Sawyer, the director of New Vegas. Like Elder Scrolls, it has no public platform rule. Forza Horizon 5 already sold on PlayStation years after its Xbox launch, so the next Forza is another test of whether Sharma will pull a live brand back in.
Kojima has said Physint could be the biggest-selling game he could make, which is why Sony’s silence still bothers him. Xbox believed the pitch. It has not yet believed it enough to say the next Metal Gear-shaped object in his career will be missing from the machine that made his name. Until that call is public, the TGS banner is a publisher credit, and the generation it is supposed to flip is still a set of alpha kits due in 2027.
