Apple Intelligence Now Asks Flagship iPhones for 14GB

Apple lists up to 14GB for Apple Intelligence on iPhone 17 Pro and Air, as on-device Siri voice tools claim extra free space.

Apple now wants up to 14GB free on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air for Apple Intelligence. Other supported iPhones stay at up to 8GB, a split published with iOS 27 on September 14, 2026.

The extra room is for a larger on-device model that makes Siri’s voice more personal and dictation more accurate. Keeping that model on the phone is the privacy pitch, and it now has a storage invoice.

Apple Posts a 14GB Bill for On-Device Siri

The next generation of Apple Intelligence turns on by itself on supported hardware when you install the 27.0 software, according to Apple’s support note “How to get the next generation of Apple Intelligence,” dated September 14, 2026. There is no separate opt-in once the update is on the phone and the languages line up.

That same note is where the new storage split appears. Apple asks for up to 14 GB of storage on device for iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Other Apple Intelligence iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro units are listed at up to 8GB. An Apple Watch paired to an Intelligence iPhone needs up to 1.5GB.

The company has long said the cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is processing on the device, so the system can use personal context without collecting it, and that the product stays private at every step. Local models have to live in flash to make that promise. The 14GB line is what that promise now costs on the phones that get the bigger model.

The Phones That Draw the Larger Model

Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 still runs on iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. The 14GB figure is not a new entry ticket for the whole feature set. It is a second lane inside that list.

APPLE’S STORAGE SPLIT IN IOS 27

Device group Storage Apple lists Memory note on the same line
iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air Up to 14GB Named on the 14GB line
Other Apple Intelligence iPhones Up to 8GB 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 family, and other supported iPhones
iPad with M4 or later Up to 14GB At least 12GB of unified memory
Mac with M3 or later Up to 14GB At least 12GB of unified memory
Apple Vision Pro (M5) Up to 14GB M5 model only
Other Intelligence iPad, Mac, Vision Pro Up to 8GB Supported chips that miss the 14GB cut
Apple Watch, paired Up to 1.5GB Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, SE 3

iOS 27 puts the powerful on-device models on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models and later. That later group is how iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo enter the story, even though the storage page still names last year’s Pro phones and the Air.

The A20 Pro chip in iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and, Apple says, 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro. The foldable Duo uses the same chip. Those phones were built to run the heavier local work. They also inherit the heavier free-space ask that comes with it.

Why iPhone 17 Pro and Air Need the Extra Space

Two iOS 27 features sit on those powerful on-device models, and both are written into Apple’s own update notes. One is a new Siri voice you can tune. The other is dictation that Apple says is more accurate, using a model that stays on the phone.

New voice experience offers more expressive and natural-sounding voices, and lets you customize expressivity and pace to make Siri more personal to you using powerful on-device models on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models and later

Apple, About iOS 27 Updates, September 14, 2026

The same notes add “more accurate dictation using an on-device model on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models and later.” Those are the tools that do not land on an iPhone 16 Pro or a base iPhone 17. If you want Siri to customize expressivity and pace, you are on the hardware that Apple is now matching to the 14GB line.

People who followed WWDC in June already knew that gate. Apple had said the most capable on-device model needed 12GB of unified memory on iPad and Mac, and it named the same iPhone group that now appears at 14GB. The surprise in the public notes is not who gets expressive Siri. It is how much free space that local copy can demand once iOS 27 is installed.

Siri AI itself is rolling out in English as a beta, with a dedicated Siri app that syncs conversations over iCloud. Voice customization is a local extra on top of that assistant, which is why it tracks the bigger model rather than the whole Intelligence device list.

From 4GB to a Two-Lane Requirement

Apple told customers in 2024 that on-device Intelligence would grow. The listed free-space figure has done exactly that, then split into two lanes.

APPLE INTELLIGENCE STORAGE SINCE 2024

  1. September 2024: Apple Intelligence ships in iOS 18.1. Apple’s notes put the on-device models at 4GB and warn that the figure will rise as more features arrive.
  2. January 2025: After iOS 18.2 adds image tools such as Image Playground and Image Wand, the listed need moves to 7GB on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
  3. September 2025: iOS 26 keeps the listed need at 7GB even as Apple adds more Intelligence features.
  4. September 14, 2026: iOS 27 publishes two figures, up to 8GB on most Intelligence hardware and up to 14GB on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and the matching iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro group.

That is a 6GB gap between the two iOS 27 lanes, and it is 10GB above the 4GB figure Apple printed at launch. For two years the company held a single number across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. iOS 27 is the first time the storage ask follows the model split.

The iPhone 18 Pro spec sheet still says Apple Intelligence on-device models use about 7GB and can be deleted if you turn the feature off. That 7GB is the size of the models the sheet says you can remove, not the “up to 14GB” free-space figure on the Intelligence support page. Turning the feature back on downloads the models again.

A 256GB Floor Still Leaves Less Room for Photos

The phones in the 14GB conversation no longer start at 128GB. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max ship in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, with the Pro at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299. iPhone Air starts at 256GB for $1,099 and tops out at 1TB for $1,699. Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the Duo, starts at 256GB for $1,999, with pre-orders on October 16 and shipments on October 23.

STORAGE TIERS ON SALE WITH IOS 27

Model Storage Apple sells US starting price
iPhone 18 Pro 256GB to 2TB $1,199
iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB to 2TB $1,299
iPhone Duo 256GB to 2TB $1,999
iPhone Air 256GB, 512GB, 1TB $1,099
iPhone 16 128GB $799

A 256GB floor makes 14GB easier to swallow than it would have been on a 128GB flagship. It does not make the space free. Apple’s 18 Pro sheet also says a standard setup uses about 12GB to 24GB for iOS 27, its latest features, and Apple apps you can delete. Stack that beside Intelligence models and a camera roll, and the first 256GB tier still fills faster than the marketing implies.

The 128GB iPhone 16 remains on sale at $799 and stays in the 8GB Intelligence lane. It never gets the expressive Siri voices. The storage squeeze and the advanced model have been pulled apart: the cheapest phone Apple still sells is tight on space and locked out of the larger local model, while the phones that run that model start at 256GB and still owe more free gigabytes to keep it resident.

New iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units reached stores on September 18, 2026, four days after iOS 27. Anyone who unboxed one into a full restore from an older, crowded backup will hit the Intelligence download while the Photos library is still landing.

The Same Split on iPad, Mac, and Watch

The 14GB line is not an iPhone-only quirk. Apple applies it to iPad models with M4 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac models with M3 or later and at least 12GB, and Apple Vision Pro with the M5 chip. Those are the same cuts Apple used for the more capable on-device model. A base iPad or an older M1 Mac that still runs Apple Intelligence stays at up to 8GB.

Local models are only half of the bill. The support page also caps features that rely on server-side models, including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts.

WHAT APPLE CAPS ON THE SERVER SIDE

  • Daily limits: Caps can vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, and other factors, Apple says.
  • A future fee: Expanded access to those server features “will be available for a fee in the future.”
  • Language lock: Device language and Siri language must match, or Intelligence can go offline until the new Siri language finishes downloading.
  • Watch assist: Some watchOS 27 Intelligence features still need an Intelligence iPhone nearby.

So the privacy design now asks for more NAND on the phones that can hold the larger model, and it still meters the cloud half of Siri AI. You pay in gigabytes to keep the voice model local, then you may pay again if you blow through the daily server cap.

Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 supports English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Some features still miss regions or languages. Features that work at home keep working when you travel, Apple says.

How to See What Apple Intelligence Is Using

iOS already shows Intelligence under system storage, which is the practical check after the 27.0 update. The models are not a separate App Store download you can offload like a game.

CHECK THE MODELS ON YOUR IPHONE

  • Open iPhone Storage: Go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, and tap the iOS line to see what Apple Intelligence is using.
  • Turn the feature off: The 18 Pro spec sheet says the on-device models can be deleted if Apple Intelligence is turned off, and that turning it on downloads them again.
  • Free the obvious: Offload unused apps, dump watched TV downloads, and turn on Optimize iPhone Storage under iCloud Photos if the camera roll is the bulk of the phone.

  • Watch the language pack: If you change Siri’s language, wait until it matches the system language before you assume Intelligence is gone for good.

Free iCloud is still 5GB, which does not absorb a 4K library on its own. Apple’s photo tools in iOS 27, including Spatial Reframing, Extend, and a stronger Clean Up, also want originals on hand. The same update that asks for 14GB of headroom is the one that makes it more tempting to keep full-resolution video on the phone.

If free space is the blocker, the first move is still Settings, not a new iPhone. The 14GB figure is an “up to” ceiling on a published support page, and the 8GB lane is unchanged for every Intelligence iPhone Apple did not put on that 14GB list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which iPhones need 14GB of storage for Apple Intelligence?

Apple’s iOS 27 support page names iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air at up to 14GB. iPhone 11 through iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone SE do not run Apple Intelligence at all, so they have no Intelligence storage figure.

How much storage did Apple Intelligence need when it launched?

Apple listed 4GB with iOS 18.1 in 2024 and added a footnote that on-device model storage would increase as more features rolled out. That warning is the through-line to the 14GB figure, not a surprise added in 2026.

Can I delete Apple Intelligence models to free space on iPhone?

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs say on-device models use about 7GB and can be deleted if Apple Intelligence is turned off. You lose Writing Tools, notification summaries, Genmoji, Image Playground generation, and the rest of the Intelligence set until you turn it back on and the models download again.

What happens if Siri language does not match the iPhone language?

Apple says Intelligence might become unavailable until the new Siri language fully downloads and matches the device language. The storage hit can land twice if you switch languages, because the new pack has to finish before the features return.
