iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Bug Prompted Needless Phone Swaps
Failed Face ID inside apps is rebooting some iPhone 18 Pro phones, and Apple Support already sent owners to swap hardware a software patch will fix.
Apple has confirmed a software fix for an iPhone 18 Pro Face ID bug that freezes some phones and forces a reboot after a failed scan. The update is due early the week of September 28. The crash does not show up as a dead sensor on the lock screen. It hits when Face ID fails inside an app, then the whole phone panics.
Some owners already walked into Apple Stores and left with replacement units. Apple is now treating the fault as software, which means those swaps were the costly extra step, not the cure.
Protected Apps, Not the Lock Screen
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale September 18 running iOS 27. Within three days, owners said a missed Face ID scan could lock the display, kill all touch input, and restart the phone a few seconds later. Independent testing reproduced that freeze on a European iPhone 18 Pro by covering a face with a hand while opening the Passwords app. After the restart, a panic log sat in Settings under Analytics, the record iOS writes when the kernel gives up.
Lock-screen misses have not been the trigger in that testing. The path that blows up is Face ID inside an app that demands it, including Passwords, Wallet, and any icon set to Require Face ID. Tapping Try Face ID Again after a miss is the gesture that keeps showing up in owner reports. The bug does not hit every unit. It has been common enough, in reader mail and public threads, that Apple confirmed a patch rather than calling the reports isolated.
LOCK SCREEN VERSUS IN-APP FACE ID
| Path | On an affected 18 Pro | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Lock-screen Face ID miss | No crash in published testing | Stay on the lock screen, retry or type a passcode |
| Failed Face ID in Passwords, Wallet, or a locked app | Touch dies, then a panic reboot | Lock screen returns; Face ID stays off until a passcode is entered |
| Apple Store hardware swap | Some owners already completed one | Not needed for this bug once the software update lands |
A second iOS 27 reboot, distinct from this one, can hit any iPhone when Notification Center and Control Center are pulled together. That is a separate code path. The Face ID panic is tied to the new Pro models.
Apple Support Sent Owners Back for a Swap
Before Apple confirmed a software fix on September 23, diagnostics at support had already called some units faulty. At least one iPhone 18 Pro Max owner described three Face ID panics and another restart while Apple Wallet was loading, all inside the first day, then a Face ID reset that did not stop it. Support ran diagnostics and started a replacement. Other owners went through the same loop: reset Face ID, reinstall iOS, sit through remote tests, then get told the hardware was bad.
App developer Benjamin Mayo, who reproduced the freeze, called that swap advice a likely misdiagnosis. Apple later confirmed a software update is in the works and should be available early the week of September 28, and said a new phone is not required for this fault. That confirmation arrived five days after launch, which is long enough for a weekend of Genius Bar visits on a device that iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Monthly Apple financing is $49.95 and $54.12 for 24 months.
By September 25 some owners were still stuck in that queue. One Pro Max buyer said the phone had been unusable since a September 19 delivery after cycling through every support desk without a replacement. The software call from Apple should have closed those tickets. It has not, in every case, reached the person on the other end of the chat.
The Infrared Camera Now Sits Under the Clock
This is the first Pro iPhone to split Face ID’s hardware. The selfie camera and the infrared dot projector stay in the Dynamic Island. The infrared camera, the part that reads the face, now sits under the OLED toward the upper left, near where the clock is drawn. Apple’s own troubleshooting page already tells owners that on these models the TrueDepth camera towards the left corner can be blocked by a finger or palm in landscape. That is the same miss the Passwords repro used on purpose: cover the face, fail the scan, watch the phone panic.
Repair teardowns show how the island got smaller. iFixit found the infrared camera has moved beneath the screen, with the punch visible as a slightly dimmer circle of pixels just left of the time. Under a microscope, every other row of display pixels is missing over that sensor so infrared light can pass through. The island itself is about 25% smaller than last year’s visible cutout, which is the cosmetic win this hardware was built to deliver.
WHAT MOVED ON THE 18 PRO
- Infrared camera: It now sits under the glass at the upper left, by the status-bar clock, instead of inside the island.
- Dot projector and selfie camera: Both remain in the central Dynamic Island opening.
- Pixel grid over the sensor: Every other row is omitted so infrared can reach the camera without a second hole.
- Visible island: The cutout is about 25% smaller, with room for up to three Live Activities.
- Matching pipeline: Face ID on 18 Pro models adds extra image data on top of the usual depth map and infrared frame.
Apple updated its Face ID technology note on September 18, the same day the phones reached stores, to describe that extra image data. The older TrueDepth recipe still applies. The new line is the 18 Pro-only supplement.
The TrueDepth camera captures accurate face data by projecting and analyzing thousands of invisible dots to create a depth map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face.
On iPhone 18 Pro models or later, this data is supplemented by additional image data to maintain Face ID performance.
Apple, About Face ID Advanced Technology
Apple still puts the chance that a random person unlocks a phone with Face ID at less than 1 in 1,000,000 with a single enrolled look. The panic is not a false match. It is the failure path, the scan that does not succeed, taking the whole system with it. A covered face while opening Passwords or Wallet is ordinary use, which is why a bug on that path is not a rare corner. It is a high-frequency miss that shipping iOS 27 still did not catch on every unit.
What a Panic Reboot Does to Your Passcode
After a panic, the phone comes back to the lock screen. Face ID does not unlock it again until a passcode is typed once. That is normal iOS behavior after any restart, and it is the part that turns a two-second freeze into a real stop. If the miss happened while paying, opening a password vault, or raising a boarding pass, the next step is the PIN, not another glance.
If the display stays dead and the automatic reboot never comes, Apple’s force-restart sequence still works: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Face ID is built to work from about 10 to 20 inches, in portrait and landscape on these models, and with a mask on iPhone 12 and later. Sunglasses that block infrared, a privacy screen protector, a palm over the new left-corner sensor, or a hard backlight can all produce a miss. On an affected 18 Pro, that miss is the input that used to mean “try again” and now can mean “reboot.”
Turning off Require Face ID on individual apps, for a few days, is the blunt workaround. It does not fix the code. It keeps you off the path that panics.
A Point Release Is Due the Week of September 28
Apple has not named the iOS version that will carry the Face ID fix. iOS 27.0.1 has already shown up in web analytics, and that is the build most people expect, because it is the first point release after iOS 27 shipped on September 14. Until Apple posts release notes, that version number stays a guess.
The watch did not wait. On September 23, the same day Apple confirmed the iPhone software fix, it released watchOS 27.0.1 for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 to stop unexpected restarts. The new watches and the new Pro iPhones launched together. The watch patch is already in the wild. The phone patch is still a promise for the week of September 28.
THE WEEK THE BUG SURFACED
- September 9, 2026: Apple unveils the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at Apple Park, with pre-orders set for September 12 at 5 a.m. PT.
- September 14, 2026: iOS 27 ships, the software the new Pro models will run on day one.
- September 18, 2026: The phones go on sale in more than 65 countries and regions. Apple’s Face ID page adds the 18 Pro extra-image-data line the same day.
- September 21, 2026: Owner reports of Face ID panics spread. Testing reproduces a freeze in the Passwords app on a European iPhone 18 Pro.
- September 23, 2026: Apple confirms a software update for early the following week. watchOS 27.0.1 ships for random restarts on Series 12 and Ultra 4.
- September 25, 2026: Twenty additional countries and regions get the 18 Pro lineup, still on the unpatched iOS 27 build.
Colors are burgundy, glacier, silver, and black. Storage runs 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. The 6.3-inch Pro and 6.9-inch Pro Max share the A20 Pro chip and the same split Face ID layout. The camera work Apple sold hardest, a 48MP Fusion main lens with ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0, is not implicated in the panic. The new under-glass infrared camera is.
Twenty More Countries Get the Unpatched Build
September 25 is the second ship date Apple listed in its launch release, for 20 more countries and regions. Those boxes contain the same iOS 27 build that has been panicking a subset of first-wave phones since September 18. There is no day-one patch waiting in Settings. The software update Apple promised is still dated to the week of September 28.
UNTIL THE UPDATE LANDS
- Skip the swap: A replacement phone is the wrong fix for this bug, unless a separate hardware test has actually failed.
- Stay off the in-app path: Use a passcode for Passwords, Wallet, and apps locked behind Require Face ID, or turn that lock off until the patch.
- If it freezes: Wait for the automatic reboot, or force a restart with volume up, volume down, then the side button.
- After the reboot: Type the passcode once so Face ID can run again.
- When the build appears: Open Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install it rather than waiting on a store visit.
By September 25 the iPhone patch had still not appeared in Software Update. The Face ID hardware that shrank the island is staying. The failed-scan path in iOS 27 is what Apple has to rewrite, and until that point release lands, a missed glance inside an app remains the fastest way some iPhone 18 Pro units can take themselves down.
