Hyundai’s Record August Rode on Exter and Venue
Hyundai’s best August, 54,396 cars, came from Exter and Venue growth, while Creta rose 2 percent and exports fell 31 percent.
Hyundai Motor India sold 54,396 cars in August 2026, its best August on record, as the Exter and Venue carried a month the Creta could not. Domestic volume rose 23.6 percent from 44,001 a year earlier, a gain of 10,395 cars. Exports fell the other way, to 11,400 from 16,500, so combined sales only reached 65,796, up 8.8 percent.
India’s passenger-vehicle market jumped 36.5 percent in the same month. Hyundai still finished fourth, and its share slipped even as Tarun Garg, MD and CEO, called the domestic tally a record.
Hyundai’s Record August Came From Its Cheapest Cars
The filing on 1 September is the clean version of the month. Garg said April to August domestic sales were up 12.6 percent, and he called 54,396 the highest-ever figure for any August month. He also said exports were hit by logistics tied to the conflict in West Asia. Against July’s 54,210 domestic units, August added 186 cars, a 0.3 percent nudge.
The mix under that record is the story. Creta, Venue, Exter, Aura, Grand i10 Nios and i20 together delivered 53,002 units, 97 percent of the month. Alcazar, Verna, Ioniq 5 and Tucson added 1,394. SUVs were 67 percent of the board, hatchbacks 19 percent, compact and mid-size sedans 13 percent.
THE AUGUST COMPANY TALLY
- Domestic: 54,396 units, up 23.6 percent from 44,001.
- Exports: 11,400 units, down 31 percent from 16,500.
- Combined: 65,796 units, up 8.8 percent from 60,501.
- April-August: domestic sales up 12.6 percent, per Garg.
That is a volume win built at the bottom of the range. The cars that grew 40 percent or more sit under the Creta on price, tax and size. The cars Hyundai uses to talk about family SUVs, petrol sedans and global EVs went backwards.
Six Nameplates Did 97 Percent of the Work
Creta still sold the most. It did not sell the growth. 16,288 units is 30 percent of Hyundai’s August, and only 2 percent more than the 15,924 of August 2025. From July’s 18,088, the nameplate dropped 1,800 units. It was also the only Hyundai in India’s top 10, in eighth place, behind Punch, Wagon R, Swift, Fronx, Ertiga, Nexon and Dzire.
HYUNDAI INDIA, AUGUST 2026
| Model | Aug 2026 | Aug 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creta | 16,288 | 15,924 | +2% |
| Venue | 11,365 | 8,109 | +40% |
| Exter | 8,157 | 5,061 | +61% |
| Aura | 6,685 | 5,336 | +25% |
| Grand i10 Nios | 5,342 | 3,908 | +37% |
| i20 | 5,165 | 3,634 | +42% |
| Alcazar | 856 | 1,187 | -28% |
| Verna | 529 | 771 | -31% |
| Ioniq 5 | 9 | 14 | -36% |
| Tucson | 0 | 57 | – |
Venue took second place with 11,365 units, 21 percent of the company, up 40 percent from the older first-generation run a year earlier. Q1 already showed the new Venue on a tear: Hyundai’s board papers said the all-new model recorded highest-ever quarterly Venue sales in India, even after a supplier fire capped domestic growth at 5.4 percent in that quarter.
Exter was the fastest mover, 8,157 units, up 61 percent, and the only Hyundai model to grow that hard. Aura, Grand i10 Nios and i20 all rose 25 to 42 percent. In Q1, CNG was 18 percent of sales, with Aura at 95 percent CNG and Exter at 32 percent, while rural sales hit 26 percent. Cheap metal, gas kits and small-town demand did more for August than the mid-size badge on the hoardings.
Tata Punch Still Laps the Exter
Exter’s 61 percent looks like a breakout until it is sat next to the car it was built to fight. Tata Punch, ICE and EV together, was India’s best-selling car in August at 21,320 units, up 99 percent from 10,704. That is 2.6 times the Exter. The Exter facelift from Rs 5,79,900 landed on 20 March 2026. Five months later Hyundai still owns a thin slice of the hottest class in the country.
India’s sub-4 metre SUVs totalled 121,391 units, up 41 percent from 86,169. Venue ranked fifth in that pack. Exter ranked eighth, behind Punch, Fronx, Nexon, Brezza, Venue, Sonet and Mahindra’s XUV 3XO.
SUB-4 METRE SUVS, AUGUST 2026
| Model | Aug 2026 | Aug 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Punch | 21,320 | 10,704 | +99% |
| Maruti Fronx | 18,730 | 12,422 | +51% |
| Tata Nexon | 18,431 | 14,004 | +32% |
| Maruti Brezza | 15,288 | 13,620 | +12% |
| Hyundai Venue | 11,365 | 8,109 | +40% |
| Kia Sonet | 9,048 | 7,741 | +17% |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO | 8,302 | 5,521 | +50% |
| Hyundai Exter | 8,157 | 5,061 | +61% |
Venue plus Exter still add up to less than Punch on its own. Hyundai is present in the class that is eating the market. It is not setting the pace there. Shoppers comparing compact SUVs now treat Nexon, Brezza, Sonet and XUV 3XO as live options, not footnotes under a Hyundai brochure.
A 67 Percent Boom Around a Flat Creta
Creta still led the 4.2 to 4.5 metre class, 16,288 units and a 20 percent share of 79,691. The class itself grew 67 percent from 47,756. Almost 32,000 extra mid-size SUVs found buyers in a year. Creta took 364 of them.
Maruti Victoris sold 12,978. Kia Seltos sold 11,716, up about 150 percent from a weak year-ago base, and closed to within 4,600 units of Creta. The top three still held about half the class, but the half behind them is full of new metal. Creta remains the volume leader and the slowest established name in a sprint.
In June, after a fire at a supplier plant, Venue had already outsold Creta, 10,776 to 7,168, while Hyundai’s domestic month fell to 39,635. August restored Creta to first inside the company. It did not restore the gap the badge used to enjoy when the mid-size class was smaller and less crowded. Buyers arguing that class now put cabin space, service coverage and resale on the table, and Seltos is winning some of those arguments. Others walk to Honda Elevate or Nissan Tekton rather than default to the Hyundai.
The 7-Seater Boom Left Alcazar Behind
India’s 7-seater market grew 28 percent, to 86,703 from 67,875. Ertiga led on 18,516. Scorpio took 15,576, up 58 percent. Mahindra’s XUV700 line took 8,541, up 72 percent. Alcazar sold 856, down 28 percent from 1,187, good for 14th place and 1.0 percent of a class that is expanding without it.
THE NAMES THAT WENT BACKWARDS
- Alcazar: 856 units, down 28 percent, while 7-seaters as a group rose 28 percent.
- Verna: 529 units, down 31 percent, the weakest run among Hyundai’s regular ICE cars.
- Ioniq 5: 9 units, down 36 percent, still a CKD build from kits shipped out of Ulsan.
- Tucson: zero dispatches, against 57 in August 2025.
Verna’s 529 units are the sedan problem in a single line. Aura, the cheaper compact sedan, still grew 25 percent because it shares a floor with the Grand i10 and a CNG kit that Q1 said was almost the whole mix. Verna does not get that cover. Ioniq 5, the only fully global EV Hyundai currently builds in India from knocked-down kits, is a rounding error next to Creta Electric, which the company does not split out of the 16,288.
Why Hyundai Trailed India’s 36.5 Percent Jump
SIAM put passenger vehicle sales of 439,309 units in August, up 36.5 percent from 321,901. Utility vehicles did most of that work, 250,084 units, up 39.2 percent. Passenger cars rose 23.8 percent to 112,011, and vans 10.9 percent to 11,961. Hyundai’s 23.6 percent matches the car-class rate, not the SUV-class rate, and its share of the PV market slipped from 13.7 percent to 12.4 percent.
Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM, said the August jump sat on a lower base from last year. GST 2.0 rates came in on 22 September 2025. In August 2025 buyers waited, and makers held back dispatches. August 2026 is the first clean year-on-year look at that wait. Tata rose 59 percent, to 65,253. Mahindra’s 59,257-unit August dispatch was up 50 percent and kept the firm third. Kia rose 48.1 percent to 29,042 and passed Toyota, which fell 3 percent to 28,410. Maruti sold 176,971, up 34.8 percent. Hyundai’s record was real. It was also the slowest growth among the five volume leaders that went forwards.
THE YEAR THAT SHAPED AUGUST
- 22 September 2025: GST 2.0 car tax cuts take effect after a month of delayed buying.
- 20 March 2026: Hyundai launches the facelifted Exter, priced from Rs 5,79,900.
- June 2026: a supplier fire costs 13,900 units; domestic sales fall to 39,635 and Venue briefly leads.
- 22 June 2026: Garg says production is back to normal across plants.
- 30 July 2026: Q1 results show EBITDA margin at 9.3 percent, against 13.3 percent a year earlier.
- 1 September 2026: the company files August domestic sales of 54,396 and flags the West Asia hit to exports.
Q1 already showed what a cheaper mix plus a production hole does to the P&L. Revenue was Rs 163,346 million, PAT Rs 8,886 million, against Rs 13,692 million a year earlier. Garg said the quarter had several headwinds, that production was fully normal, and that recovery should pick up in Q2 on both domestic and export sides. August’s domestic record is that recovery. The export line is not.
We continue to sustain strong growth momentum in FY2027, with domestic sales growing by 12.6% YoY during the April-August period. Our August domestic sales of 54,396 units (+23.6% YoY), the highest-ever figure for any August month, reflect the popularity of Hyundai’s versatile product portfolio. While total exports in August were impacted by logistical constraints arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the broader geo-political environment during the month, we remain optimistic that export demand will continue to be strong in the coming months as the geo-political situation improves.
Tarun Garg, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, 1 September 2026 exchange filing
July exports had been 21,150. August’s 11,400 cut the combined month from July’s 75,360 to 65,796. Domestic held. The overseas book did not.
A New Electric SUV Is Due This Quarter
Hyundai Motor Company, at its August investor day, said India will get an all-new electric SUV in the fourth quarter, localised and designed for the market, with a new infotainment set and Level 2 assistance. It also said India will get a new petrol mid-size SUV. That ICE model is the Bayon-based car testers have already seen, meant to sit between Venue and Creta. A next Creta is still a 2027 job.
WHAT IS ALREADY ON THE CLOCK
- Mass-market EV: a sub-Creta electric SUV, due in the fourth quarter, built for India rather than imported as Ioniq 5 is.
- New ICE SUV: a mid-size model to sit with Venue and Creta in the same financial year.
- Capacity: 320,000 extra units of global capacity earmarked for India by 2030, with a 90 percent local-content target.
- The hole now: Ioniq 5 at 9 units and Tucson at zero, while Creta Electric is still wrapped inside the 16,288.
Menon said festive demand should still help the July-September quarter. Hyundai will meet that stretch with Exter and Venue doing the volume, Creta defending a class that grew 67 percent without it, and two new SUVs promised before the next Creta arrives. The August record is already in. The mix that produced it is the part that has to change if the next one is going to look different.

What Is Hyundai Motor India’s FY27 Volume Guidance?
On 30 July 2026 Garg restated guidance of 8 to 10 percent year-on-year volume growth for both domestic sales and exports in FY27, plus an 11 to 14 percent EBITDA margin. April-August domestic sales were already up 12.6 percent, ahead of that domestic band, while August exports ran 31 percent below the year-ago month.
What Buyback Does Hyundai Offer on the Creta Electric?
Hyundai’s assured buyback on Creta Electric is 60 percent of value for up to three years or 45,000 km, announced on 4 August 2026.
