MapQuest Rushed Android Auto After a Viral Lake Stand
MapQuest followed a 2 million-user lake-name surge with a rushed Android Auto beta that still flashes CarPlay and only covers the U.S. and Canada.
MapQuest put a beta of its maps on Android Auto in September 2026, days after a lake-name stand sent the app to the top of the charts. The car build still flashes CarPlay on some Android screens.
The company already had CarPlay. Android drivers got the leftover port, plus live traffic, turn-by-turn prompts, and a new incident feed, on maps that only cover the United States and Canada.
A Lake Name Put MapQuest Back on Phones
On August 27, 2026, MapQuest posted a map that still read Lake Ontario and a four-word line: “We’re not changing it.” Google Maps and Apple Maps had begun showing Lake America for U.S. users after an executive order that same day. MapQuest kept the old name and opened a gag tool that lets people rename the lake themselves, a trick it first built in February 2025 for the Gulf of Mexico.
By 7 p.m. PDT on August 30, System1, the ad company that owns MapQuest, said the iOS app was the No. 1 navigation title and the No. 8 overall free app in the U.S. Apple App Store, and the No. 2 overall free app in Canada. That was the highest chart spot in the brand’s 30-year history. Downloads since that Thursday ran into the hundreds of thousands, with usage running 50 times its normal rate.
We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they’re familiar with. Hundreds of thousands of people signaled to us this weekend that we got it right, by downloading our app.
Doug Berger, General Manager of MapQuest, System1 press release
A week later the parent company said MapQuest had surpassed 2 million new users of its iOS and Android apps over the prior week, and that the surge had carried it to No. 1 among overall free apps on both the App Store and Google Play.
THE ROAD TO THE DASHBOARD
- August 27, 2026: MapQuest posts “We’re not changing it” the same day as the Lake America order.
- August 30, 2026: System1 logs No. 1 in navigation and No. 8 overall free on the U.S. App Store, with usage at 50 times normal.
- September 1, 2026: A MapQuest app update adds experimental Android Auto support and crowdsourced incident reports.
- September 4, 2026: MapQuest tells Android users dinner is served.
- September 8, 2026: System1 reports 2 million new users in a week and No. 1 overall free on both stores.
- September 13, 2026: MapQuest teases a transit beta plus CarPlay and Android Auto audio fixes.
The downloads were a protest vote and a nostalgia binge at once. Keeping them meant putting the pin on the one screen drivers actually watch, which MapQuest had not done for Android cars.
Overnight Shifts, Then Dinner Is Served
CarPlay was already in the iPhone app. Android Auto was not. On September 2, MapQuest posted that its engineers were “working overnight to release Android Auto ASAP,” with a clip of the team still at desks. Two days later the brand posted a changelog for the September 1 build and a five-word toast.

“Android Gang, dinner is served,” MapQuest wrote, then added a “BIG shoutout to our engineers.” The in-car mode is still labelled experimental. Incident reporting arrived in the same drop, so drivers can flag and see crashes, road closures, speed traps, and police activity. Units now default to metric where the region expects it.
The louder problem is not whether MapQuest can draw a route. It is whether a CarPlay-derived beta can hold people who actually drive with Android Auto. A zoomed-out map, lag, cut-off voice prompts, and a CarPlay label on an Android screen are the tells of a port that shipped to catch a week of fame.
How to Put MapQuest on Android Auto
If Android Auto already runs in the car, an updated MapQuest install is enough for the icon to appear on the launcher. Wireless cars need the phone paired over Bluetooth first. A USB cable still works in cars that never got the wireless stack.
STEPS THAT GET THE ICON ON SCREEN
- Install or update: Grab the latest MapQuest build on Google Play, which the listing marked as updated on September 3, 2026.
- Connect the phone: Plug in USB, or finish the wireless Android Auto pairing your car already uses.
- Unhide the app: If the icon is missing, open Settings, then Connected devices, then Android Auto, then Customize launcher, and check MapQuest.
- Set a destination: The car screen should show turn-by-turn guidance, live traffic, and the new incident alerts.
The Play Store listing still describes the product as maps and GPS for the United States and Canada, with satellite imagery, voice guidance for driving and walking, real-time traffic, and routing meant to save time and fuel. It carries ads and in-app purchases. The listing showed a 4.7 rating from about 72,900 reviews and more than 10 million lifetime downloads, a lifetime total, not the September spike.
The Interface Still Mentions CarPlay
Early Android Auto runs look like a cousin of the iPhone car mode, because that is what they are. Testers have seen a notice that says CarPlay on an Android head unit. The map often sits too far out. The app has crashed on some phones. Spoken directions have been cut off mid-prompt. Latency shows up as a lag between the road and the arrow.
THE BETA’S ROUGH EDGES
- CarPlay leftover: An Android screen has flashed a CarPlay label, a leftover from the iPhone build MapQuest already shipped.
- Zoomed-out map: The in-car view pulls back so far that the next turn is harder to read at a glance.
- Lag and crashes: Testers have hit latency and, on some phones, a hard crash.
- Clipped voice: Turn prompts have stopped mid-sentence, which is a problem at highway speed.
On September 9, MapQuest said the team was working on Android Auto and CarPlay improvements as it spoke. Four days later it promised audio fixes for both, plus a transit beta. Until those land, the dashboard build is not a clean swap for Google Maps. A tester who ran the same routes used in a Waze-versus-Maps check got MapQuest lines that matched Google Maps, and still called the Android Auto gap a deal-breaker.
An Ad Company Owns the Maps
MapQuest launched in 1996 as one of the first mapping services on the web, the print-the-directions site a generation used before phones had GPS. System1, which lists itself as an AI-powered customer-acquisition and marketing platform, acquired the brand from Verizon in 2019 and still owns it. Sister properties include Startpage, CouponFollow, and Dogpile.
System1 tried a privacy-first spin in October 2024 with Private Maps by MapQuest, built with Startpage and pitched as a map with no tracking and no ads. That app shut down. A full MapQuest app returned in 2026, then the lake post did in a week what the privacy pitch had not. The consumer app is free and ad-supported, with an option to pay to drop the ads. The company also sells mapping APIs and a last-mile product called RoadWarrior. Berger’s job is to keep those new accounts opening the app after the joke gets old. The car screen is the habit machine.
Coverage Stops at the U.S. and Canada
The Play Store copy is blunt: this is a U.S. and Canada navigator. That matches the political week that revived it, a fight over a lake that sits on that border. It also walls the product off from anyone driving in Europe, Asia, or Mexico. A tester in the U.K. sideloaded the Android app and still got local routes, but that is not the supported product, and it does not put MapQuest on an overseas Android Auto deck.
Google Maps still has the wider toolbox. MapQuest has no Street View. Public transit was missing from the driving build when testers tried it, which is why the September 13 transit beta matters, if it ever reaches the car. Waze, which Google owns, already lives on Android Auto with the hazard feed MapQuest is only now copying: speed bumps, red lights, and crashes called in by other drivers. Sygic and TomTom Go are on the same launcher for drivers who want a paid, offline-first pin.
ANDROID AUTO MAP APPS IN THIS LANE
| App | Android Auto | What you get in the car |
|---|---|---|
| MapQuest | Beta, September 1 update | Turn-by-turn, live traffic, incident reports; maps for the U.S. and Canada; leftover CarPlay UI |
| Google Maps | Full support | Richer feature set than MapQuest, including transit and Street View in the phone app |
| Waze | Full support | Crowdsourced hazards, custom voices, and avatars, already built for the commute |
| Sygic / TomTom Go | Available | Other third-party pins already on the Android Auto launcher |
Apple Maps will load in a browser on an Android phone. That trick does not reach Android Auto. For a driver who wants a non-Google pin on a Google head unit, MapQuest is now in the list, in beta, on two countries.
What the Beta Still Cannot Match
MapQuest can hold a route. It can show traffic. It can take a tap when someone ahead wrecks. It cannot yet match the in-car polish Google spent a decade putting on Android Auto, and it cannot take a tourist from JFK to Heathrow on official maps. The September 13 note on transit and audio is the first public sign that the overnight port is still being rebuilt in daylight.
The lake post bought the brand a week at No. 1 and a crowd that had not opened MapQuest since paper directions. The Android Auto beta is how System1 tries to keep that crowd after the name fight leaves the timeline. On a good install the icon shows up, the voice talks, and the incidents populate. On a bad one the screen still says CarPlay.
