Google Messages Chat Themes Reach Ordinary Text Threads
Google Messages chat themes now work on SMS, 22 days after an RCS-only launch, because the wallpaper never left your phone.
Google Messages now lets people set chat themes on ordinary SMS threads, a switch spotted on September 18 after the feature launched as RCS-only. A thread in r/GoogleMessages showed the Chat theme control inside a regular text, and a Pixel 6a showed a red dot on the menu asking the user to try it.
Google has not posted a separate SMS note. The tell is simpler: the new wallpaper never travelled with the message, so the RCS gate was a product flag, not a network need.
A Red Dot on Ordinary Text Threads
The control lives where the RCS version already lived. Open a thread, tap the person’s name at the top or the three-dot menu, and tap Chat theme. The same path sits on the contact info page if you reach it by tapping the name.
Preset wallpapers, a photo from the gallery, and a color palette all apply on that screen. A preview comes first, then Apply. Reset to default puts the thread back if the family group should not be a shrine to the dog.
On SMS, only the person who sets the look sees it. That matches how Chat theme already behaved on RCS after the August launch. The other phone keeps its own bubbles and background, even if both people use Google Messages.
It is still a quiet flag. People on the same app build did not all get the menu in August, and the SMS path is arriving the same way, with a red dot for some and nothing for others. If the item is missing, the phone is still waiting on Google’s switch, not on a new store listing.
Google Gated a Skin That Never Left the Phone
Chat themes were sold as an RCS treat. Google’s August 27 community post, signed by Google Messages community manager Debashruti Roy, said the point was to “make every conversation feel uniquely yours by customizing the colors and background wallpapers for individual chats,” then added that RCS had to be on.
Chat theme customizations are only visible to you on your device, so you can style your chats without affecting what the recipient sees.

That sentence is the whole trick. A wallpaper that never leaves the handset does not care whether the send button is using RCS or a carrier text. The August copy still tied the picker to RCS, and the note under the steps said the chat had to be an RCS thread.
On September 1, Mishaal Rahman, who handles community engagement for Android at Google, still described the feature as available to use in RCS chats. The same day, Android’s own account pushed a demo of custom backgrounds and bubble colors, and Seang Chau, VP and GM of the Android platform at Google, listed Chat theme in the Android Drop notes: pick a background, use your own photo, change bubble colors.

The SMS sighting came 22 days after the August 27 post. Nothing about SMS changed in those weeks. Google flipped the client flag that had been hiding the same local skin behind a protocol that the skin does not use.
How the 2024 Color Tool Worked
The older Change colors tool, from 2024, is the one that actually moved on both phones. In an RCS thread it restyled bubbles for everyone in the chat, which is why it could not run on a plain text. Chat theme replaced that menu item and kept the color carousel, then added wallpapers, and made the whole look local.
Once the shared part died, the SMS block had no technical job. The new picker can sit on any thread because it is closer to a per-chat wallpaper than to a message feature. People who remember the old two-way colors are meeting a different product with a similar name.
LOCAL SKIN VS SHARED COLOR
| Control | Who sees it | Where it ran |
|---|---|---|
| Change colors (2024) | Everyone in the RCS chat | RCS only |
| Chat theme colors | Only the person who set them | RCS from August 27, SMS from September 18 |
| Chat theme wallpaper | Only the person who set it | RCS from August 27, SMS from September 18 |
Dynamic Color sits first in the new palette and follows the wallpaper or the system accent. Eight more static palettes sit beside it, which is nine color options in all. Each one tints bubbles and smaller chrome such as the voice button, still only on the phone that applied it.
After Samsung Messages Went Dark in July
The people who felt the gap first were Galaxy owners pushed off Samsung Messages. That app had per-chat wallpapers for years. Samsung stopped listing it in the US on July 6, 2026, after months of prompts to move to Google Messages, and it dropped off the Galaxy Store and Play Store.
Google had been testing Chat theme since a late May beta, where Change colors turned into Chat theme and wallpaper packs appeared. A wider beta on June 26 put a red dot on the overflow menu. Samsung’s shutdown still landed first. For several weeks the replacement inbox looked plainer than the one it had just replaced, unless the thread was RCS and the server flag had already landed.
CHAT THEME DATES
- May 29, 2026: Chat theme shows up in a Messages beta and takes over the Change colors item.
- June 26, 2026: More beta phones get the picker and a red dot on the three-dot menu.
- July 6, 2026: Samsung Messages shuts down in the US, taking its wallpapers with it.
- August 27, 2026: Google posts the public Chat theme pitch and still requires RCS.
- September 1, 2026: Google staff and the Android account still describe it as an RCS chat look.
- September 18, 2026: The same menu appears on a regular text, confirmed on a Pixel 6a.
Through late August the menu itself was unstable. It showed up, vanished, and sometimes returned on the same phone, including a Pixel 11 Pro. That is the same class of server-side drip as the SMS flip. People who still cannot theme a green-bubble thread are not waiting on a new protocol. They are waiting on the same lottery that held RCS users through the summer.
Nine Wallpaper Packs and a Gallery Photo
Google ships nine wallpaper collections: Animals, Architecture, Black & White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, Macro, Space, Sunsets, and Textures. Choose a photo pulls any still from the gallery or Google Photos. Pick a pack or a photo and the bubbles try to match; the color carousel at the top can override that match.
Each thread stores its own look. A work contact can stay on a flat palette while a family group gets a holiday photo. Deleting a themed thread and starting again with the same number drops you back to the default, which is the same reset the old color tool used.
HOW TO SET A CHAT THEME
- Open the thread: In Google Messages, go into the SMS or RCS chat you want to restyle.
- Open Chat theme: Tap the name in the top bar, or tap the three-dot menu, then tap Chat theme.
- Pick color and wallpaper: Choose a palette, then a pack or Choose a photo, preview the pair, and tap Apply.
- Undo it: Return to Chat theme, tap Reset to default, and apply again.
The Chat theme steps in Google’s help pages now walk through that path and stress that the look is only visible to you. They no longer say the chat has to be RCS. That line has been stripped since the August community post required it, which is the closest thing Google has published to an SMS blessing, and it still is not a blog post.
What Still Needs an RCS Connection?
Chat theme on a standard text does not turn that text into RCS. Typing dots, read ticks, and sharp photo sharing still depend on an RCS session between the two phones, and Google’s own help is blunt that those extras do not follow you onto SMS. The wallpaper is dress-up for threads that already failed over, including older numbers, short codes, and chats that drop off data.
FEATURES THAT STILL NEED RCS
- Typing indicators: The other person never sees the dots on a plain text, and you will not see theirs.
- Read receipts: Delivery and read ticks that RCS draws next to a bubble do not appear on SMS or MMS.
- High-res media: Photos and video stay at carrier MMS quality unless both sides are on RCS.
- Group extras: Mixed groups that include someone off RCS lose the richer RCS group tools for that room.
Google’s RCS FAQ states that typing indicators and read receipts do not work when the other person is not on RCS, while SMS and MMS still carry the words. If data dies mid-thread, Messages can fall back to those older pipes. The new wallpaper stays put on your screen through that drop. It just sits on top of a thinner chat.
iPhone RCS is in the field now, so fewer Android-iPhone threads are stuck on green bubbles than a year ago, but fallback is not gone. Carrier gaps, travel SIMs, and people who switched the RCS toggle off still land in SMS. Those inboxes were the ones the August gate left looking like a second app inside Messages.
WhatsApp Still Offers a Default for Every Chat
Google is still thinking one thread at a time. There is no control in Messages to stamp one wallpaper onto every SMS and RCS chat in one tap. You style a person, then the next person, which is fine for a handful of VIP threads and slow if the goal is to get rid of the default gray everywhere.
WhatsApp’s help already documents WhatsApp chat theme and wallpaper controls that can cover every thread at once, with a default theme, a default wallpaper, and a mix-and-match path across 20 colors. That work is local too in the current help text. Google did not invent private chat dress-up; it arrived late, then spent August pretending a local photo needed RCS.
The useful part of the September 18 switch is narrower than the launch copy. SMS threads can finally look like the rest of the app on your phone, including the ones that will never grow typing dots. The protocol walls that actually need RCS are still where they were on August 27. Google’s help page already reads as if that distinction had always been obvious.
