Slow Horses Season 6 Packs Two Herron Novels Into Six Hours
Slow Horses Season 6 started September 16 on Apple TV, folding two Mick Herron novels into six weekly episodes for the first time.
Slow Horses Season 6 began streaming on Apple TV on September 16, a six-episode run drawn from two Mick Herron novels. The first hour, Circle of Life, is live. Five more episodes follow each Wednesday through October 21, the same weekly drip the show has used since it launched on April 1, 2022.
Apple’s June press release said the six-episode season premieres September 16 worldwide, then lands one episode a week. That calendar was never the mystery. The change sits in the source pile: for the first time, one season has to carry two books, and the original lead writer is gone.
The First Episode Landed on September 16
Apple lists every installment on a Wednesday. In earlier seasons, U.S. viewers have often found the file the evening before the listed date, while U.K. listings have pointed at Wednesday morning. The official sheet still reads Wednesday, and the finale is locked for October 21.
You can watch the series on Apple TV with the first five seasons already up. New subscribers get a seven-day trial; the service is $14.99 a month after that. There is no full-season dump. Anyone who finished Circle of Life on premiere night is already in the queue for Daddy Issues on September 23.
THE SEASON 6 DROP DATES
| Episode | Title | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Circle of Life | September 16 |
| 2 | Daddy Issues | September 23 |
| 3 | Resurrection | September 30 |
| 4 | Lost and Found | October 7 |
| 5 | Sayonara | October 14 |
| 6 | Judgment Day | October 21 |
That weekly habit is the first thing viewers hit. One hour, then a seven-day wait, even though the writers folded extra novel into the same six slots. Apple did not loosen the drip to match the fatter source. The books got compressed. The calendar did not.
Gary Oldman is back as Jackson Lamb, the filthy, sharp boss of MI5’s dumping ground. Apple’s own teaser treated his worst table manners as the seasonal greeting.

Two Books Had to Share Six Hours
Seasons 1 through 5 each tracked one novel in Herron’s Slough House sequence. Season 6 breaks that line. It draws on the Joe Country and Slough House novels, books six and seven, published in 2019 and 2021. Apple’s logline says the Slow Horses go on the run after Diana Taverner pulls them into “a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.”
Adam Randall directed all six episodes, as this series usually does with one director per run. He also directed season 4. He said Joe Country could have been “the most amazing film,” but it left too little work for several regulars.
Taverner’s not in it a great deal, Lamb hasn’t got a huge amount to do, so it was sort of the decision to combine them and find a way for them to work together.

Randall split the two books by job. Joe Country is the Wales-in-the-snow hunt built around Frank Harkness, River Cartwright’s mercenary father. Slough House is the denser spy plot, with more for Taverner and Lamb, plus the return of Sid Baker. The writers spent the season braiding those strands so the assassins, Taverner’s mess at the Park, and Harkness become one story by the end.
Gaby Chiappe adapted the season after original lead writer Will Smith stepped away following season 5. Executive producer Doug Urbanski said the pair of novels each felt “thin enough” to share a run, and that Herron’s own lines still feed a lot of the talk on screen. Chiappe told an interviewer the merge “made complete sense,” then added a warning with no joke in it: “When they’re in danger, the danger is very, very real, and sometimes people die.”
The gamble is obvious on paper. Two books that already carry deaths, family scores, and a Park power fight now have to land in the same six hours that used to hold one plot. Early reviews of the finished season say Chiappe kept the tone and raised the body count. The weekly drop will decide whether that compression reads as pace or as missing chapters.
Who Comes Back for Season 6?
Apple’s first-look release named the core company and one new hire. Olivia Cooke’s return as Sid Baker was confirmed later, in the August 18 trailer and by Randall, after the June press list had kept her off the page.
THE SLOUGH HOUSE ROLL CALL
- Jackson Lamb: Oldman is back as the brilliant, rude head of the office nobody wants.
- River Cartwright: Jack Lowden returns as the closest thing the show has to a lead besides Lamb, now carrying father trouble that season 4 left open.
- Diana Taverner: Kristin Scott Thomas is back at the Park as First Desk, the person Apple says drags the team into the revenge game.
- The house staff: Saskia Reeves (Catherine Standish), Rosalind Eleazar (Louisa Guy), Christopher Chung (Roddy Ho), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Shirley Dander), Tom Brooke (J.K. Coe), and Joanna Scanlan (Moira Tregorian) all return.
- The Park and family: Samuel West as Peter Judd, Ruth Bradley as Emma Flyte, Jonathan Pryce as David Cartwright, and Hugo Weaving as Frank Harkness.
- New and restored: BAFTA winner Lenny Rush joins as teenager Reece Nesmith; Cooke reprises Sidonie “Sid” Baker, last seen in season 1.
Chiappe called Rush’s Reece the first young regular of this kind on the show and “such an odd couple” with Lamb. Weaving’s Harkness is the reunion that divides people. Some viewers wanted a clean Slough House job. Season 6 is also, in Randall’s words, “sort of a sequel to season 4” in the River-and-Frank line, so that argument was never going to go away.
Taverner’s promotion is the other shift. She is no longer only the operator across town. The season puts her in the top chair and still in a fight with Judd, while Lamb treats her silence about dead former agents as a personal insult. The Park and the house are in the same plot whether either side likes it.
Sid Baker’s Return Took Three Writers Rooms
Cooke played Sid in three episodes of season 1, then appeared to die on a stakeout. Roddy later told River the hospital file and the MI5 record did not match, which left a door cracked for anyone who had read ahead in the novels. Herron brings her back in the book titled Slough House. The TV team still had to get the actor.
Randall said the room wrote the season on the assumption she would come back, then rebuilt a version with a different character when it looked as if she might not, then rebuilt it a third time when Cooke said yes. The no-Sid draft, he said, “was nowhere near as good.” They had to have her. Cooke later admitted she had already “told quite a lot of people.”
The premiere does not spend its hour on a reunion stunt. Circle of Life opens on River at his grandfather’s funeral, on former Slow Horses turning up dead, and on Harkness walking into a family day he was not invited to. Sid is the longer fuse. Randall said they pushed the violence until it felt messy, and that by episode 3 “you’re on a roller coaster.”
Apple Ordered Season 8 on September 15
One day before season 6 began, Apple announced an eighth season adapted from Clown Town, Herron’s ninth novel, published in 2025. Season 7, drawn from Bad Actors (2022), had already been ordered the year before and is in production. Jay Hunt, Apple TV’s creative director for international, put the renewal in the simplest terms.
Slow Horses continues to charm audiences all around the world and I’m delighted that Jackson Lamb and his gang of lovable misfits will be back for an eighth season. Their acerbic take on the high-octane world of espionage is completely unique.

Apple’s own awards recap is the ledger the company is willing to read in public. The series has won three Emmy Awards, two for directing a drama series and one for writing, plus five BAFTA Television Awards, including Writer, Drama, and consecutive craft wins for editing and sound. All five finished seasons hold a Certified Fresh score, two of them at 100 percent, and season 4 was Rotten Tomatoes’ number one series of 2024. Oldman has Golden Globe, Emmy, Actor, and BAFTA nominations for Lamb and still no lead-actor Emmy to hang on the stained coat.
WHAT APPLE IS LOCKING IN
- Three Emmys: two for directing, one for writing, across the first five seasons.
- Five BAFTAs: including Writer and Drama, with extra craft prizes for editing and sound.
- Two perfect seasons: Apple says two of the five finished runs scored 100 percent with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Eight TV seasons: six on the air or dropping now, seven in the works, eight already booked to Clown Town.
See-Saw Films makes the show, with Oldman among the executive producers. Season 8 will be adapted by Ben Vanstone, with Randall set to direct again. Apple’s logline for that later run already points at “the most explosive confrontation yet” between Lamb and Taverner after a botched attempt to blackmail the Park. The company is writing cheques past a season nobody had seen on September 15.
Apple also staged a world premiere for season 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, then used the next three days to renew the show and put episode 1 online. That is not how a nervous streamer treats a book series it might abandon.
Nine Novels, Eight Seasons, One Pipeline
Herron’s main Slough House novels now number nine, with extra novellas around them. Dead Lions, the second book, won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger in 2013. The TV series has been catching that shelf at a clip almost no other literary spy drama matches: a season most autumns, scripts for the next run while the current one is still shooting.
HOW THE NOVELS LINE UP ON SCREEN
| TV season | Novel | Book year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Slow Horses | 2010 |
| 2 | Dead Lions | 2013 |
| 3 | Real Tigers | 2016 |
| 4 | Spook Street | 2017 |
| 5 | London Rules | 2018 |
| 6 | Joe Country and Slough House | 2019 and 2021 |
| 7 (ordered) | Bad Actors | 2022 |
| 8 (ordered) | Clown Town | 2025 |
After season 8, the published novels run out unless Herron writes more. Urbanski has already nodded at that problem and at the obvious answer: most TV shows never had books, and Herron has not stopped. Combining Joe Country with Slough House is how the screen version skips ahead without parking Lamb for two years. It is also how a Wales-set novel that did not feed Taverner or Lamb enough scenes still reaches the screen inside the annual slot.
That is the pattern, and season 6 is the first time it had to bend. Five years of one book, one writer, six hours. Then a merge, a new adapter, and two more seasons announced before the new method had even faced a Friday-morning argument about whether episode 1 rushed the funeral.
Circle of Life Starts a Five-Week Wait
From September 16 to October 21 is five weeks. The title of episode 1 is a joke with teeth, and Randall has already said the hour has to plant Taverner’s fear, the pair of killers, and Harkness before those plots join. He also said Jack Lowden did the bonnet work himself when River goes after Frank’s car, with a stunt driver at the wheel because Weaving does not drive. The show still wants the silly physical beat to come out of rage, not out of a stunt reel.
The louder complaint after premiere night was simpler than any of that. Apple released one episode. The next one is September 23. For a series that now turns seasons around the way few prestige dramas do, the wait between hours is the old rule that did not get broken. The books were allowed to stack. The Wednesdays were not.
Episode 2, Daddy Issues, is due on September 23, and the run ends on October 21 with Judgment Day. Apple already has Bad Actors and Clown Town on the slate behind them.
