Madonna Takes Artist of the Year After a Polarizing Open
Madonna won 2026 VMAs Artist of the Year and seven awards after a split opener, 42 years after her first MTV night was called career suicide.
Madonna won Artist of the Year at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, beating Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars and Morgan Wallen. She is 68, the oldest winner of a prize first handed out in 2017.
She also opened the show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, her first VMA performance in 23 years, then left with seven Moon Persons. Viewers split on the number itself. The trophy still arrived.
Madonna Took Artist of the Year at 68
Snoop Dogg hosted on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and a stream on Paramount+. Madonna came in with 13 nominations, tying Lady Gaga’s record for most nods in a single night, and with 84 career nominations she sits one behind Beyoncé’s 85.
Swift entered with 11 nominations and a record 30 competitive Moon Persons already on the shelf. Carpenter had nine nods, Grande eight, Mars six. The artist prize is a voted category, listed in public voting for Artist of the Year and tallied under MTV’s official voting rules, which award the trophy to the nominee with the most votes.

Every previous Artist of the Year winner was in their 20s or 30s. Camila Cabello, at 21 in 2018, remains the youngest. Madonna’s win broke that age band in one night, on a show that still sells itself as youth television.
Seven Moon Persons for One Album Cycle
Three awards were handed to her onstage: Artist of the Year, Best Dance for Confessions II, The Film, and Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love” with Carpenter. Four more followed in the crafts and album columns, all tied to the same July release.
WHERE THE SEVEN MOON PERSONS WENT
| Award | Work | When it landed |
|---|---|---|
| Artist of the Year | Madonna | Onstage |
| Best Collaboration | “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter | Onstage |
| Best Dance | Confessions II, The Film | Onstage |
| Best Album | Confessions II | Off-air |
| Best Long Form Video | Confessions II, The Film | Off-air |
| Best Cinematography | Confessions II, The Film | Off-air |
| Best Choreography | Confessions II, The Film | Off-air |
That haul gives her 26 competitive VMAs, still behind Swift at 32 and Beyoncé at 29. BTS took three trophies, all for “Swim,” and finished as runners-up. Swift, Carpenter and Grande each won two competitive awards. Madonna was the only artist who needed both hands.
Sabrina, Charli, and the Bathroom Recreated
It was her fifth time opening the VMAs, a record. She had been tied with Rihanna at four. The last time she performed here was 2003, when she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood” medley.
Carpenter sat at a piano in black and white and struck the first chords of “Bring Your Love,” with Madonna hovering above her. The ballad broke into a dance arrangement, dancers filling the stage, and Madonna’s black costume came off to a maroon leotard cut like the 2005 Confessions on a Dance Floor sleeve. A choir picked up an “I did it love” refrain on the way into “Danceteria.”
Charli xcx joined for “Danceteria Afterhours,” the remix released on September 24. The bit rebuilt the bathroom party from the album’s short film, with Debi Mazar walking back into a song that already name-checks her.
CAMEOS INSIDE DANCETERIA
- Julia Garner: The actress is attached to Madonna’s long-in-the-works biopic and appeared in the stage recreation.
- Seth Rogen and sombr: Both turned up in the bathroom sequence beside a dancer marked in Keith Haring’s lines.
- Fab 5 Freddy: He is named in the song’s bridge, which walks through Madonna’s Lower East Side origin story, and he was put on the set rather than left as a lyric.
One viewer called the number a “train wreck” and said she “looked like she was hanging on for dear life.” Another wrote that much of it was “just embarrassing” and still added that the wins were welcome. The praise ran as hard the other way, including “THEE QUEEN” and “killed it tonight.” The split was the performance.
She Told the Shoe Story From 1984
Madonna opened the Artist of the Year speech by thanking her fingers, “because I can always count on them.” She told the room that most of them were not born when she played the first Video Music Awards.
MADONNA AT THE VMAS
- September 14, 1984: Opens the first ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, stepping out of a wedding cake in a white dress and a Boy Toy belt to sing “Like a Virgin.” A stiletto slips. She dives for the shoe, the skirt rides up, and cameras catch her underwear. Her manager later tells her the career is over.
- 2003: Returns for the Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera medley, her last VMA performance for 23 years.
- September 27, 2026: Opens for a record fifth time, then accepts Artist of the Year and tells the shoe story back to the same franchise that once treated it as a scandal.
Stylist Maripol had pushed the white dress over a black, Sabbath-style virgin look. Madonna later said she dove to make it look planned. Publicist Liz Rosenberg remembered industry people telling her the career was finished before it started. Former manager Freddy DeMann said it was not perfect and that it worked. Huey Lewis’s agent Dan Weiner, watching that night, said the woman on the cake was “not going to happen.”
I had a little problem with my shoes and I dove onto the stage to try and make myself look cute and sexy and like I meant to do it.
Madonna, Artist of the Year speech, Peacock Theater
She reminded the 2026 crowd that “butt cheeks were not hanging out” in 1984. She said she went backstage proud, and that her manager told her it was over. Then she put the last year and a half in one line: finding herself, believing in herself, and making the music she wanted to make, which she called the definition of being an artist.
Accepting Best Dance with Charli xcx and Troye Sivan beside her, she said she came to New York to be a dancer. “I came to life on the dance floor, I fell in love with people on the dance floor, and I lost many people I loved on the dance floor.” Dance, she said, makes everyone equal.
A No. 1 Album With a No. 74 Single
Confessions II, her 15th studio album, arrived on July 3 through Warner Records as a sequel to 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, made again with Stuart Price. The 16-track deluxe Confessions II formats run as a continuous mix. Guests include Carpenter, Feid, Stromae, Martin Garrix and Madonna’s daughter Lola Leon.
CONFESSIONS II FIRST WEEK
- Chart: No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated July 18, her 10th leader on the tally.
- Units: 134,000 equivalent album units, with 114,000 in album sales, according to Luminate.
- Company: She is the fourth act with at least 10 No. 1s on both the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100, where she has 12. The Beatles, Drake and Swift are the others.
- Radio: “I Feel So Free” was her first radio No. 1 in 18 years on Dance Airplay. “Love Sensation” became her ninth leader on that chart.
The album is a chart event that barely touched pop radio. “Bring Your Love,” released April 30, is the only Confessions II track to reach the Hot 100, and it bowed at No. 74. That is a thin singles case for Artist of the Year, and a strong albums case if the prize is meant to honor a body of work rather than a summer hit.
TORSO directed Confessions II, The Film, built on the first six songs, with a Tribeca Festival premiere and a YouTube release Warner announced after the screening. Kate Moss, Benedict Cumberbatch, Debi Mazar, Julia Garner and Lola Leon appear in it. The short is now Confessions II The Film on YouTube, and on Sunday it lost Video of the Year while sweeping dance, long form, cinematography and choreography.
The Trophy Landed Like a Booking
The night was built around Madonna before a vote was counted: 13 nominations, the open, Carpenter and Charli as living proof of influence, then the artist prize. A No. 1 dance album in July gave MTV a legitimate headliner. The live vocal and the camera’s love of a tight maroon short gave everyone else an argument.
The sharp version of that argument is simple. Artist of the Year in 2026, on a youth channel, going to a 68-year-old whose only Hot 100 visit this cycle peaked at 74, looks like a booking fee. One widely shared post called the wins “too obviously sponsored.” Another treated the trophy as charity and told her to retire.
The other version is also simple. Confessions II was a reviewed, bought, streamed record, her first Billboard 200 No. 1 of this decade, and the first time in years the music, not the tour litigation or the face discourse, led the conversation. People who skipped the album heard an opener. People who lived with the record heard a coronation of that work. Both groups watched the same broadcast.
She asked the room to spend a year, or ten, or the rest of a life, finding and believing in themselves. It was a closing argument from someone who has been told, on this same show, that she was finished.
Video of the Year Stayed With Swift
Swift took Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” her sixth win in that category, three times as many as Beyoncé, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott or Rihanna, who each have two. She also won Best Direction for “Opalite,” her fifth in that craft, after “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero” and “Fortnight.” She has written and directed 18 of the 60 music videos she has made.
Dakota Johnson, a friend, presented the first Artist Director Honors. Swift then premiered “Patient Zero,” which she directed, starring Johnson and Colin Farrell. She dedicated Video of the Year to Dolly Parton, who died on August 25 at 80, 33 days before the telecast.
Kacey Musgraves took the tribute, first letting Parton’s own vocal on “I Will Always Love You” fill the theater, then stepping into a hot pink gown and a piled hairdo to finish the song. RAYE, sombr, Teddy Swims and Adam Lambert honored George Michael. Chuck D presented the Video Vanguard Award to Nirvana, the first group or duo to receive it in 23 years, since Duran Duran in 2003.
OTHER TROPHIES FROM THE SAME NIGHT
- Best New Artist: Sienna Spiro, the first English winner in the category since One Direction in 2012.
- Best Pop: Lisa, for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, the first prize of the broadcast.
- Song of the Year: BTS, “Swim,” which also won Best K-Pop and Best Group.
- Song of Summer: Ariana Grande, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” her second title in that fan vote after 2019.
Lisa, Sienna Spiro, Bruno Mars, sombr, Shaboozey and GENER8ION with Yung Lean also performed. Grande and BTS were not in the building to pick up their awards. Madonna and Swift were, which is how a Sunday in Los Angeles turned into a two-woman split: one took the artist crown and the film crafts, the other took the videos and the director medal.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Did MTV Start Awarding Artist of the Year?
The category debuted in 2017. Until Sunday, every winner had been in their 20s or 30s, a run Madonna ended at 68. It is a fan-voted prize, separate from Video of the Year, which remains the show’s last envelope and the one Swift has now won six times.
Who Directed Confessions II, The Film?
The duo TORSO, David Toro and Solomon Chase, directed the short, which Warner says covers the album’s first six songs, including “I Feel So Free,” “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria.” It premiered at the 25th Tribeca Film Festival, then went to YouTube. Dolce & Gabbana dressed the production, including 250 extras. Julia Garner, already attached to Madonna’s biopic, appears in the film and walked into the VMA stage version of its bathroom scene.
What Is Danceteria Afterhours?
It is a September 24 remix of “Danceteria,” Madonna’s tribute to the New York club where she found a scene in the early 1980s, recut with Charli xcx. The album cut interpolates Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and name-checks Debbie Harry, Debi Mazar, Mark Kamins, Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Stuart Price produced the Afterhours version. The VMA staging put Mazar and Fab 5 Freddy back in the room as more than liner notes.
How Did “Bring Your Love” Fit the Night’s Collab Prize?
Madonna and Carpenter’s duet is the sixth all-female pairing to win Best Collaboration, after Beyoncé and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar,” Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone,” Lady Gaga and Grande’s “Rain on Me,” Doja Cat and SZA’s “Kiss Me More,” and Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG.” They lost Song of the Year to BTS. Carpenter separately won Best Editing for “House Tour.”
Madonna now has 26 competitive VMAs, a fifth opening slot in the record book, and an Artist of the Year trophy that a slice of the audience will not grant her. The manager who told her the first one was fatal has been answered, on the same show, with a Moon Person she can count on her fingers.
