The New Steam Robot Vacuums Give Up the Whole House
IFA 2026 robot vacuums add 180°C steam, taller steps and drop-down seals, but Dreame’s flagship steam mode lasts around 30 to 40 minutes.
Dreame’s new Aqua20 robot vacuum makes 180°C steam, then needs a recharge after a 30-to-40-minute spot clean. That is the bargain IFA 2026 in Berlin put on the floor, and it runs through the rest of the new fleet too.
The Aqua20 Pro Ultra Roller X Complete, Dreame’s first steam robot, vaporizes water in a core boiler and pushes it through four outlets before a hot-water roller scrubs the stain. Dawn Chen, a director at Dreame, said steam mode lasts around 30 to 40 minutes, against around four hours with the boiler off, and that it has to be switched on in the app for a zone under 10 square metres.
Dreame’s 180°C Steam Needs a Recharge
Dreame’s 3 September launch statement calls the Aqua20 the first robot vacuum with a 180°C core steam source and claims a 99.999% bacteria removal rate in SGS lab work. The roller uses AquaRoll fresh water, 18 N of down force and 300 RPM, and MopExtend now pushes that roller out by 8cm, double the Aqua10 Ultra Roller Complete. Suction is listed at 40,000 Pa.
Those are whole-home numbers. Steam is not. Chen said the mode is for stubborn, dried-on spots only. In Berlin the plume was faint on still photos, and the robot is expected to head back to the dock after a steam job.
STEAM MODE, AS DREAME DESCRIBES IT
- Core heat: Steam is generated inside the robot at 180°C and released through four outlets along the roller.
- Runtime on: Around 30 to 40 minutes with steam running, per Dawn Chen.
- Runtime off: Around four hours when the boiler stays off.
- Zone cap: Steam is limited to a zone under 10 square metres and must be toggled in the app.
Building that boiler into a disc that still has to navigate under sofas created two engineering problems Chen named on the record. Turning water into steam leaves limescale, so Dreame put remover in the pipeline. The bigger fight was heat next to the electronics.
Because we put this kind of heat inside the robot body, the heat it produces will affect other components, especially the electronic components inside the robot body.
Dawn Chen, Director, Dreame
Engineers added insulation and redesigned the interior to keep the same low shell. The dock then washes the roller at 100°C and waits until the washboard has cooled before the next job. None of that restores the four-hour unattended run once steam is on. A kitchen with last night’s sauce is a fair target. A full downstairs clean is not.
WHAT WE KNOW
- European sale: Dreame says the Aqua20 goes on sale on 21 September in Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland, with a UK arrival promised before the end of 2026.
- UK list: The British launch statement prices it at £1,299.
- EU list: European listings put the same robot at €1,499, with €300 off in the first weeks, which is €1,199.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- US timing: A US on-sale date is unconfirmed because of FCC rules, Chen said.
- Stain tests: Independent pickup tests of the 180°C pretreat have not been published.
- Whole-home steam: Dreame has not published a full-home runtime with the boiler on, only the 30-to-40-minute spot figure.
Early public chatter after IFA still treats steam as a spec-sheet win. The battery math is the part that will show up first in a real kitchen.
Hardwood Makers Still Hold the Veto
Heat is also a floor problem, and Dreame has already said so on its own site. A March 23, 2026 care guide from the Dreame editorial team sets out when steam is safe on hardwood: only if both the flooring maker and the cleaner allow it. If either says no, or the floor type is unknown, the guide says to skip steam.
Steam is a gas. The same guide notes that mops must boil water past 212°F (100°C) to make it, and that the risk is heat plus moisture at joints, scratches and worn finish. “Water-resistant”, “waterproof” and “steam-safe” are not the same thing, it warns, and steam use may void a floor warranty.
FLOORS DREAME SAYS TO TREAT AS SPECIAL CASES
- Sealed solid hardwood: A surface coat does not automatically make a board steam-safe; the care leaflet has to say yes.
- Engineered wood: Many makers of engineered floors ban steam because moisture can still reach edges, veneer and the core.
- Unfinished or unsealed wood: Do not steam; moisture enters too easily and can raise grain, stain or swell the boards.
- Oiled, waxed or damaged finish: Heat can change the look of the coat, and worn patches or open gaps should be repaired first.
The Aqua20 is aimed at dried kitchen film on hard floors. That is also where a lot of European homes still have sealed oak, parquet or engineered plank whose warranty line is stricter than a show-floor tile. A robot that can throw 180°C steam into a 10-square-metre zone still has to be locked out of the rooms that cannot take it.
Ten Centimetres Is Not a Staircase
If steam is the loudest demo, step climbing is the one that decides whether a robot finishes a British or German terrace at all. Old door sills and double thresholds still park a lot of bots in the hall. Dreame’s upgraded ProLeap system on the Aqua20 clears a single-layer obstacle up to 5cm and a double-layer stack up to 10cm, the tallest figure in this IFA group. In the Berlin demo it sometimes needed more than one run-up.
DJI’s second-generation Romo, sold as the P2 and A2, uses robotic legs that cross 8.5 cm on a double step and 4cm on a single, with mechatronics to lift over a detected sill. Roborock rates the Saros 20 Flow Complete’s AdaptiLift chassis at 8.8cm of double-layer clearance. iRobot’s Roomba Max 875, the other heated-mop story of the fortnight, is listed at 3.5cm.
IFA THRESHOLD AND SUCTION CLAIMS
| Robot | Single step | Double step | Suction claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreame Aqua20 Pro Ultra Roller X Complete | 5cm | 10cm | 40,000 Pa |
| DJI Romo 2 (P2 / A2) | 4cm | 8.5cm | 36,000 Pa |
| Roborock Saros 20 Flow Complete | Not listed | 8.8cm | 36,000 Pa |
| iRobot Roomba Max 875 Combo | 3.5cm | Not listed | 35,000 Pa, 20 L/s |
| Dyson R1 Nurovi Dry | Not listed | Not listed | 21,000 Pa |
DJI is clear that the legs will not climb a staircase. They are for dividers between rooms. That is still the ceiling for this generation: a high Victorian threshold is in play, a flight of stairs is not. Reviewers already had Romo 2 units on desks by 12 September, so the first real-home clips will be of sills, not of storeys.
Height still cuts the other way. The Max 875 is 9.98cm tall. The Saros 20 Flow Complete is listed at 8.98cm. A robot that hops 10cm can still fail a low sofa that a flatter chassis would have cleaned. The IFA race is to join rooms, not to shrink the body at the same time.
Why the New Bots Drop a Skirt on Carpet
Suction ratings on the new flagships sit between 21,000 Pa and 40,000 Pa, but iRobot, DJI and Dyson are now selling mechanical seals and split inlets because air that leaks around the head never reaches the pile. The Pa war did not end. It just stopped being the whole pitch.
iRobot’s Max 875 Combo, announced on 2 September, lowers a chassis skirt that the company calls SealForce. Adam Pope, vice president and chief engineer, said the point is to give airflow somewhere to go.
With SealForce, we’re able to seal the chassis against the carpet fibres, so the airflow, which has the greatest impact on pickup performance, has somewhere to go instead of escaping around the edges. More suction helps, but the seal is what takes it to a level beyond what’s previously been possible.
Adam Pope, Vice President and Chief Engineer, iRobot, Max 875 launch statement
The same SealForce skirt against carpet fibres is paired with 20 L/s of airflow and 35,000 Pa. iRobot’s 3x deeper carpet claim is against the same robot with SealForce off, not against Dreame or Roborock. DJI’s Romo 2 lowers a pressure plate on carpet to make a semi-seal around that 36,000 Pa. Ecovacs added inlet guide wheels on the DEEBOT X12S OmniCyclone for a tighter carpet seal at 27,000 Pa and 53 air watts.
Dyson went the other way. On the R1 Nurovi Dry and R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry, the company split pickup instead of dropping a full gasket. Its Twin-capture system for fine dust uses the brush bar to sweep large debris into the body so the motor can concentrate on small particles. A gasket that closes the whole inlet can push cereal and grit around the head rather than eat it. Dyson’s 21,000 Pa on the R1 looks modest next to 40,000 Pa. The design bet is that sealed fine-dust suction plus mechanical sweep beats a number that leaks at the edges.
Early R2 owners already talk about mapping speed, pickup and dock hygiene the way people talk about a daily mop-vac, including against older Roborock bases that still smell after a full teardown. That is the quieter half of IFA: a cheaper dry-and-wash robot that stays in the rooms, not a boiler that books a return to the dock.
Heated Mist Without a Heater on Board
iRobot’s Roomba Max 875 sprays ultrasonic ThermaMist while it mops, and Ecovacs’ DEEBOT X12S OmniCyclone uses FocusJet water spray, so dried stains get wet before the roller without Dreame’s on-board boiler. That is the less theatrical pretreat, and it is the one that still fits a full mopping pass.
ThermaMist is billed as continuous heated mist for 2x better stain removal against the same mopping system without the mist. The PowerSpin Max roller is 44% larger than iRobot’s standard PowerSpin, spins at 300 RPM with 18 N of pressure, and reaches 45 mm along walls. DriLift raises the roller and drops a shield on carpet. The AutoWash dock washes at 176°F (80°C) and dries at 131°F (55°C). Jennifer Lichtenheim, iRobot’s senior vice president and general manager for the Americas, said the company has sold more than 50 million robots and built the Max 875 around deep carpet, dried messes and rug protection.
Ecovacs kept FocusJet from the X12 and says it FocusJet pre-sprays clean water onto dried kitchen stains before the OZMO Roller 3.0, which turns at up to 220 RPM. SGS testing cited in the 4 September launch found 97.44% dust-mite allergen removal and 95.45% dust-mite removal from carpet. There is no 180°C core and no 10-square-metre steam cap in that kit.
HOW THE NEW PRETREATS DIFFER
| Brand | Pretreat | Heat on the robot | Stated limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreame Aqua20 | 180°C steam, four outlets | Yes, core boiler | Zone under 10 m²; around 30 to 40 minutes |
| iRobot Max 875 | ThermaMist ultrasonic heated mist | No steam core | Used during mopping; 2x stain claim vs mist off |
| Ecovacs X12S | FocusJet clean-water spray | No | Dried kitchen stains, then the roller |
Berlin demos showed a denser mist cloud from the Roomba than from Dreame’s steam jets. The Max 875 still loses the sill war at 3.5cm, so the robot that can pretreat without killing the battery is also the one most likely to stop at a tall UK threshold. Buyers with high sills and dried stains are being asked to pick which failure they can live with.
Flagship Prices From $549 to €1,499
The money sorts the theatrical bots from the ones you can order now. Dreame’s UK price is £1,299. European shops have the Aqua20 at €1,499, or €1,199 with the opening €300 cut. iRobot put the Max 875 Combo on irobot.com on 2 September at £1,099 in the UK statement and $1,199 in US listings, with the Plus 678 Combo at $899. DJI lists the Romo P2 at €1,299 and the A2 at €1,199. Ecovacs lists the X12S at $1,299.99, with an Amazon launch price of $999.99 from 4 to 11 September and a coupon price of $1,099.99 from 12 to 18 September.
Dyson priced the dry-only R1 Nurovi at $549 and made the R2 Wash+Dry a Costco exclusive at $699 from 3 September. The R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV, with UV stain spotting and 158°F water on a self-cleaning roller, is listed at $1,199 from 15 September. Jake Dyson unveiled that Nurovi family in Berlin on 3 September.
THE SALE CALENDAR AFTER IFA

- 3 September 2026: Dreame, DJI and Dyson unveil the Aqua20, Romo 2 and Nurovi robots as IFA opens in Berlin.
- 4 to 8 September 2026: IFA runs at Messe Berlin; Dreame also shows the ECHO home-service prototype, a different machine from the Aqua20.
- 15 September 2026: Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV is scheduled for US availability at $1,199.
- 21 September 2026: Aqua20 Pro Ultra Roller X Complete goes on sale in Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland.
Roborock’s Saros 20 Flow Complete, the 36,000 Pa roller-mop flagship with 8.8cm AdaptiLift, 240 RPM and 15 N on the SpiraFlow 2.0 mop, is expected to follow before October in the US as the Saros 20 Flow. OmniSight 4.0 on the Aqua20 is rated to spot more than 320 object types down to 10mm in 0.1 seconds. The Max 875’s PrecisionVision AI is rated above 300 household objects. Navigation is no longer the gap. Runtime under steam is.
The Aqua20 will be in European shops on 21 September with a boiler that Chen already limited to a small zone and a short charge. The Max 875 is already selling with mist that does not impose that ceiling, and with a 3.5cm step rating that will stop it in the houses the 10cm Dreame was built to enter. Independent stain scores are still ahead of all of them, and that is the test that decides whether 180°C was a dock-night gimmick or a kitchen tool.
