Kia Sorento Takes Aim at India’s Fortuner Class

Kia’s India-built Sorento launches September 4 as a hybrid AWD flagship aimed at Fortuner and Kodiaq buyers, a class above the XUV 7XO.

Kia India is launching the Sorento on September 4, 2026, as its first hybrid SUV and first three-row combustion flagship. Prices are due at a live premiere from 11:59 am IST, and Anantapur has been building the car since August 20, 2026.

The three-row SUV is already in dealer yards. That is the tell. This is not a brochure concept waiting on a boat. It is a locally built raid on Toyota, Skoda and Jeep money, and the sticker announced at the premiere is what decides how deep the raid goes.

Kia Stages the Sorento Premiere Without a Sticker

Kia India has spent two weeks showing the India-spec car and refusing to name a rupee figure. The official India preview of the Sorento still reads as a teaser, with hybrid, diesel and all-wheel-drive called out and a “show interest” form where a price list would normally sit. Pre-bookings are open at dealerships and on the company site for Rs 25,000.

The premiere is branded Kia Inspiration Day. The company streamed a countdown through the first days of September and asked viewers to join at 11:59 am IST on September 4, 2026. RushLane and other trade desks pointed people at the same webcast as cars were already being wiped down on dealer floors.

Gwanggu Lee, managing director and CEO of Kia India, framed the roll-out as a step into a higher shelf, not a wider Seltos. The Sorento sits above the Seltos and the Carens. It is the first Kia in India with a strong hybrid, the first Kia combustion model here with AWD, and the first three-row ICE SUV the brand has put on Indian roads.

Industry estimates that assume heavy local build cluster at Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh ex-showroom. Kia has not confirmed that band. The number that lands at the premiere is the whole plot, because a car in the low 30s undercuts Skoda and crowds Toyota’s diesel base, while a car in the low 40s just joins the Kodiaq queue.

Mahindra’s XUV 7XO Sits a Class Below

A lot of the pre-launch chatter parked the Sorento next to Mahindra’s XUV 7XO because both wear three rows and a butch face. The money says otherwise. Mahindra’s introductory ex-showroom spread for the first 40,000 units of the 7XO runs from Rs 13.66 lakh to Rs 24.92 lakh. Even the AX7L diesel automatic with AWD stops at Rs 24.92 lakh.

That is a different showroom conversation. The 7XO’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol makes 203 hp and 380 Nm. The 2.2-litre diesel makes 185 hp, with 450 Nm on the automatic. Those are the figures that sell against the Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar. They do not sell against a globally sized hybrid with AWD that Kia is pitching at Fortuner money.

The stacked lamps and three-row stance will still get the Sorento compared with the 7XO in parking lots. That is the trap. Length is expected to stay at 4,815 mm, width 1,900 mm, height 1,700 mm, wheelbase 2,815 mm. If those global numbers hold, the Kia is the larger car, and it is aimed at a more expensive ticket.

WHERE THE SORENTO ACTUALLY SITS ON PRICE

Model Ex-showroom range Engines in play Drive
Kia Sorento (estimate) Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh Hybrid 238 hp, diesel 202 hp AWD confirmed on hybrid
Toyota Fortuner Rs 34.76 lakh to Rs 50.46 lakh Petrol and 2.8-litre diesel 4WD on higher trims
Skoda Kodiaq Rs 36.99 lakh to Rs 46.99 lakh Petrol, AWD AWD
Volkswagen Tayron Rs 41.99 lakh to Rs 47.74 lakh Petrol, AWD AWD
Jeep Meridian Rs 23.33 lakh to Rs 37.92 lakh Diesel 4×4
Mahindra XUV 7XO Rs 13.66 lakh to Rs 24.92 lakh Petrol 203 hp, diesel 185 hp AWD on top diesel

MG’s Majestor starts at Rs 42.49 lakh. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV, sometimes named in the same breath, is at Rs 25.70 lakh and lives closer to the 7XO than to the Fortuner. Jeep’s Meridian is the awkward overlap: cheap enough at Rs 23.33 lakh to steal bargain hunters, expensive enough at Rs 37.92 lakh to meet a loaded Sorento.

A Strong Hybrid With Sand, Snow and Mud Modes

Kia has confirmed two engines for India, and it has confirmed AWD on the hybrid. The petrol side is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo strong hybrid rated at 238 hp and 380 Nm in global AWD form, with a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Displacement on the spec sheets in circulation is 1598 cc. The electric motor on those sheets is listed at 60 hp and 264 Nm, which matches the 44.2 kW unit Kia quotes on the European hybrid.

European pages for the same generation pair that 1.6-litre turbo with a 1.5 kWh pack and 44.2 kW motor. Kia India has not locked the India battery size in public. It has locked the pitch: this is the first strong hybrid in this three-row class in the country, and it is the first Kia hybrid here that also drives the rear axle.

The diesel is expected to share the Carnival’s 2.2-litre turbo, making 202 hp and 441 Nm, with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. A Sorento already on a dealer floor on September 4 showed that eight-speed DCT layout, which is the gearbox the diesel needs if it is to feel like the Carnival mill in a taller body. AWD on the diesel has not been confirmed for India even though the global car offers it on both engines.

THE TWO POWERTRAINS KIA HAS PUT ON THE TABLE

Powertrain Output Gearbox Drive in India
1.6-litre turbo petrol hybrid 238 hp, 380 Nm combined 6-speed automatic AWD confirmed
2.2-litre diesel (expected) 202 hp, 441 Nm 8-speed DCT AWD not confirmed

Kia India’s own teaser is blunt about where it wants the AWD story to go. The brand account posted the car with Terrain Modes for Sand, Snow and Mud, which is language borrowed from proper off-road kits even if most of these SUVs will live on tarmac. Fortuner buyers will read that as a dare. Kodiaq buyers will read it as a feature list they already own, until they notice the diesel hole in Skoda’s India range.

Skoda’s petrol-only Kodiaq, from Rs 36.99 lakh, is the product with the least cover if Kia’s diesel lands in the same neighbourhood as a hybrid AWD. A Kodiaq that still starts above Rs 36 lakh, with no diesel and no sub-Rs 30 lakh door, is a hard sell against a locally built three-row that can put both fuels in one brochure. That is the pressure the premiere number will apply, and it lands on Mladá Boleslav’s India pricing as much as it lands on Toyota’s.

Anantapur Rolled Out the First India Car in August

The first locally produced Sorento left the line at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, on August 20, 2026, 15 days before the premiere. Kia has built cars at that plant since 2019. The company says the site can make 400,000 vehicles a year and has completed nearly 1.9 million dispatches, including more than 1.5 million domestic sales and over 3.67 lakh exports. It also claims more than five lakh connected cars on Indian roads.

THE ROAD TO THE SEPTEMBER 4 PREMIERE

  1. 2019: Kia starts making cars at Anantapur.
  2. August 20, 2026: First India-spec Sorento rolls off the line; official images go out; hybrid AWD and diesel confirmed.
  3. Early September 2026: Pre-bookings continue at Rs 25,000; dealer stockyards fill; Kia counts down to Inspiration Day.
  4. September 4, 2026: Price, variants and full India specs due at 11:59 am IST.

Lee used the roll-out to put a flag in the premium end of the range, the slot Carnival never quite occupied because it is a people-mover, not an SUV.

The Sorento has long stood as a global symbol of Kia’s SUV leadership, earning the trust of customers across international markets and becoming one of Kia’s most established flagship SUV nameplates. Its arrival in India marks a defining moment for our premium portfolio. With the first locally produced Sorento rolling off the production line at our Anantapur facility today, we are taking an important step in bringing this globally acclaimed premium flagship SUV to Indian customers.

Gwanggu Lee, Managing Director and CEO, Kia India, at the Anantapur roll-out

He added that the India car is the first Sorento globally to get Live Generative AI, and called that a first for the Indian car industry. The company describes the assistant as a conversational system that can pull live information and operate cabin functions, rather than a fixed list of voice commands. That claim will be tested the first week someone asks it for a fuel stop in Hindi on a highway the map has not seen.

ANANTAPUR IN KIA’S OWN TALLY

  • Annual capacity: 400,000 vehicles, per Kia’s plant figures.
  • Dispatches: Nearly 1.9 million vehicles since the line opened.
  • Home market: More than 1.5 million of those went to Indian buyers.
  • Exports: Over 3.67 lakh units left the country from the same site.

Local build is the only reason a global D-segment SUV can even be discussed in the Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh band. A fully imported Sorento would have sat with the Tayron. Anantapur is the bet that it does not have to.

What the Cabin Ships Before the Price

This generation has been on sale globally since 2023, so it does not wear the newer Seltos face. The India car keeps the Tiger Nose grille, vertical LED headlamps and Y-shaped daytime running lamps, with a wide lower intake, LED fog lamps and aero vents in the bumper. Dual-tone alloys are expected to be 19-inch pieces. Chrome runs the window line, and the tail lamps use an inverted L signature under a roof spoiler.

Inside, official photos show a pair of screens for the cluster and the infotainment system, likely 12.3-inch units, on a layered dash with a slim vent band and a rotary drive selector. The third climate screen from the Seltos and Syros is missing. Six- and seven-seat layouts are expected, with captain chairs likely on the six-seat car, though Kia has not signed that off. Boot space on the global car is 179 litres with all three rows up and 1,996 litres with them folded.

THE KIT VISIBLE ON THE INDIA-SPEC CAR

  • Driver aids: Level-2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, hill-hold, ABS with EBD.
  • Comfort: Panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, powered tailgate, ventilated front seats.
  • Cabin tech: Dual-screen dash, digital interior mirror, ambient lighting, wireless charging, connected-car functions.
  • Access: Keyless entry, push-button start, ISOFIX mounts, electronic parking brake.
  • Voice: Kia AI Assistant with Live Generative AI, a global first on this nameplate.

Leatherette and dual-tone plastics are the expected finish, with colours shifting by variant and engine. Storage for bottles and phones is the usual Kia habit. That is not the fight. The fight is whether this cabin, in this size, with this hybrid, can be had for Fortuner-base money instead of Kodiaq-base money.

Toyota and Skoda Are the Ones on Notice

Toyota’s Fortuner still owns the default family-SUV brief in this price air, and its May 2026 revision left the range at Rs 34.76 lakh to Rs 50.46 lakh. The Legender starts at Rs 42.92 lakh. A diesel 4×4 Fortuner is the car a lot of these buyers still describe when they say they want a proper SUV. Kia cannot beat that reputation on day one. It can undercut the entry ticket and put a hybrid AWD in the same conversation, which Toyota’s India Fortuner line does not do in this form.

Skoda’s Kodiaq and Volkswagen’s Tayron bring AWD and a 2.0 TSI, and they start at Rs 36.99 lakh and Rs 41.99 lakh. They look and feel like the European product the Sorento actually is. They do not offer a diesel, and they are not priced like a car that has been through Anantapur. If Kia’s estimate of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh is even close, those two lose the value argument before the test drive.

Jeep’s Meridian is the other loser on paper, because its Rs 23.33 lakh to Rs 37.92 lakh spread is the one that actually overlaps a 30-lakh Sorento. A Compass-based three-row with 4×4 is a different flavour of the same budget. Kia’s problem there is brand heat, not equipment. Jeep still sells a story. Kia has to sell a car that already sits in the yard.

Mahindra does not lose this week. The 7XO’s job is volume between Rs 13.66 lakh and Rs 24.92 lakh. A Sorento that starts near Rs 30 lakh is an upgrade path for a Seltos owner, not a steal from an AX7 diesel. The in-house winner is Kia’s own dealer, who can now walk a Carens or Seltos buyer up to a flagship without sending them to Toyota. The in-house risk is aftersales. Warranty complaints already trail Kia’s volume cars, and a Fortuner defector will judge the workshop before the terrain modes.

Lee’s other line from the roll-out was that the India Sorento is the first globally to carry Live Generative AI. That is a software boast on a hardware bet. The hardware is the Anantapur car with hybrid AWD and a Carnival-related diesel, already in stock, waiting on a number. At 11:59 am IST on September 4, 2026, Kia either undercuts the Fortuner’s Rs 34.76 lakh floor and makes Skoda move, or it prices like a Kodiaq and the raid stays on the slides.
