In a significant move to enhance road safety and infrastructure, essential resurfacing work is scheduled to take place on the southbound M74 at Junction 8 later this month. The project, managed by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, will span five days from September 12 to September 17. This critical maintenance aims to improve the condition of the carriageway, ensuring a smoother and safer journey for daily commuters. The work will involve various traffic management measures, including contraflow systems, road closures, and lane closures, to facilitate the resurfacing process.
Traffic Management and Diversions
The resurfacing work will necessitate several traffic management strategies to minimize disruption. From 8 PM on September 12 until 6 AM on September 13, lane closures will be implemented both northbound and southbound between M74 Junctions 7 and 9. Additionally, the Junction 10 northbound on-slip road will be closed from 8 PM on September 13 until 6 AM on September 14. During this period, traffic will be diverted via the B7078 Carlisle Road through Kirkmuirhill and Blackwood to Canderside Toll Roundabout, then turning right onto the A71 Ayr Road to rejoin the M74 at Junction 8.
Further closures will occur on the southbound M74 between Junctions 7 and 8, with a lane closure on the Junction 8 on-slip road and hard shoulder running. These measures will be in place from 10 PM on September 13 until 6 AM on September 14. Traffic will be diverted via the M74 Junction 7 off-slip road, following the A72 Lanark Road and A71 Ayr Road to rejoin the M74 at Junction 8.
Impact on Commuters
Commuters using the M74 during the resurfacing period should anticipate delays and plan their journeys accordingly. The contraflow system will be in effect from 6 AM on September 14 until 10 PM on September 15, with the southbound M74 Junction 8 closed. Traffic will follow the A71 Ayr Road and the B7078 Carlisle Road to rejoin the southbound M74 at Junction 10. This diversion is expected to add extra travel time, so motorists are advised to allow for delays and consider alternative routes where possible.
The resurfacing work will also involve lane closures both northbound and southbound between M74 Junctions 7 and 9 from 8 PM on September 16 to 8 AM on September 17. Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the duration of the works to ensure public safety.
