Statkraft has secured planning consent for an additional 100MW of battery energy storage at its Coylton Greener Grid Park in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The second phase sits entirely inside the existing site boundary and lifts total capacity to 150 MW. The first 50 MW phase is already in the final stages of commissioning.

The Norwegian state-owned renewable generator will use the expanded park to charge batteries when renewable output runs high and discharge them when the grid needs support. Grid-forming converters keep the units locked in a mode that steadies voltage and frequency, services once supplied mainly by spinning gas and coal plants.

Consent Lifts Coylton to 150 MW Total

East Ayrshire’s Coylton site sits next to the existing electricity substation off the A70. Statkraft received unanimous local consent for the original 50 MW Battery Energy Storage System in February 2024. Construction began in August 2024. The company now expects that phase to finish and begin storing energy toward the end of 2026.
