Glasgow, Scotland – Commuters and pedestrians who rely on the Ibrox footbridge will face a temporary disruption as essential refurbishments are set to begin. The Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges, spanning the M8 between Junction 21 (Seaward Street) and Junction 23 (Ibrox), will undergo significant maintenance work from Monday, July 1, until Friday, December 20, 2024. Here are the details:
Essential Refurbishments
- Purpose: The 50-year-old footbridges require refurbishment to ensure their continued safe and efficient operation.
- Closure Duration: The footbridges will be closed for six months during the refurbishment period.
Overnight M8 Closures
- Weekend Closures: To facilitate the removal of spans from the site, the M8 motorway will be closed overnight in both directions on two consecutive weekends:
- Weekend 1: From 6:00 PM on Saturday, July 27, until 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
- Weekend 2: From 6:00 PM on Saturday, August 3, until 1:00 PM on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
- Affected Area: The closures will occur across the M8, in both directions, between Junctions 19 (Anderston) and 24 (Helen Street).
Diversion Routes
- Eastbound Traffic:
- Diverted onto Helen Street, Paisley Road West, Paisley Road, Kingston Street, Commerce Street, King George V Bridge, Broomielaw, and North Street. Rejoin the M8 via the Junction 19 Eastbound On-Slip.
- Westbound Traffic:
- Follow the same diversion route in the opposite direction.
Plan Ahead and Allow Extra Time
- Road users are advised to avoid travel through this location during the extended closures.
- Emergency vehicle access will not be maintained.
- The suspended spans of the footbridges will be removed for refurbishment off-site, minimizing continuous traffic management on the M8 during peak travel periods.
