Tesla CEO Elon Musk is being urged to consider Scotland as the location for a new electric vehicle (EV) gigafactory, with politicians from various parties stating that the region would be the perfect site for such a major investment.
Ash Regan’s Appeal to Musk
In a direct appeal to the world’s wealthiest individual, Ash Regan, leader of the Alba party in Holyrood, has written to Musk, encouraging him to invest in Scotland for the next Tesla Gigafactory. Regan argues that Scotland has the necessary infrastructure and advantages to support Tesla’s ambitious plans, including excellent transport links, port access, and its strategic connections to the rest of the UK and Ireland.
Scotland’s Potential as a Gigafactory Site
Scotland’s logistical advantages are key reasons for the push. Its transport network is robust, with easy access to vital ports, which could facilitate the movement of parts and finished vehicles. The high-speed connectivity to other parts of the UK and Ireland is also a compelling factor, providing Tesla with the potential to serve a large market across Europe.
The Scottish government has been keen to attract green investment, particularly in the growing electric vehicle sector, and the addition of a Tesla factory would be a game changer for local industry and jobs.
Tesla’s Expansion in Europe
At present, Tesla only operates one European gigafactory, the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, which produces the Model Y electric vehicle. However, there are growing hopes that it will also begin to produce batteries and other components in the future. The company has previously indicated interest in expanding its European manufacturing base, though it had previously pointed to Brexit as a key factor in its decision to build in Germany rather than the UK.
Reform UK’s Support
Reform UK, a political party that champions free-market policies and has an interest in boosting British industry, has also come out in support of the idea, backing Regan’s call for Musk to consider Scotland as the next site for Tesla’s expansion.
