A wildfire has erupted near Inverness, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky as firefighters battle to contain the fast-moving blaze. This marks the second major wildfire in Scotland within 24 hours, prompting warnings from authorities as the country grapples with an “extreme” risk of wildfires due to prolonged dry conditions.
Fire Crews Mobilized as Blaze Engulfs Grasslands
Firefighters rushed to the scene between Culduthel and Inverarnie after reports of a fire spreading across the grassy terrain. Smoke was visible from miles away, drifting over the southern parts of Inverness.
Six fire engines and a water tanker were deployed to combat the flames, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirming that approximately a square mile of land had been affected. The B861 road connecting Inverness to Inverarnie was closed in both directions as emergency responders worked to contain the situation.
One firefighter on the scene described the conditions as “challenging,” citing the combination of dry vegetation and strong winds that helped the fire spread rapidly.
Ash and Smoke Reach Inverness City Center
As the fire raged, ash was carried several miles by the wind, reaching into Inverness city center. Residents reported a strong smell of burning, with some areas experiencing reduced visibility due to drifting smoke.
A second, smaller wildfire was also reported further south in Farr, raising further concerns about the potential for more outbreaks in the region.
Rising Temperatures and Dry Conditions Fuel Risk
Weather conditions in Scotland have created a dangerous environment for wildfires. Despite it being early spring, temperatures have reached 18°C in some parts of the country. The SFRS had already issued an “extreme risk” wildfire warning earlier in the week, a rare measure typically reserved for the height of summer.
According to officials, wildfires occur when dry vegetation acts as fuel, allowing flames to spread quickly across open land. This year, prolonged periods of dry weather have heightened the risk, with experts warning that even a small spark could ignite another large-scale fire.
Travel Disruptions as Authorities Urge Caution
The impact of the wildfire has not been limited to the affected areas. Due to the fire near Inverarnie, the number 14 bus route from Inverness Bridge Street to Whitebridge was diverted, causing delays for commuters. Highland Council urged residents to remain alert and avoid affected areas.
Authorities have also reminded the public to be cautious in rural areas, emphasizing that human activity is a major cause of wildfires. Even a discarded cigarette or unattended campfire could have devastating consequences.

- Weather conditions — Dry, sunny weather with strong winds creates a “tinderbox” effect, making vegetation highly flammable.
Firefighters Battle Another Blaze in West Dunbartonshire
The Inverness wildfire comes just a day after another significant fire broke out in the West Kilpatrick Hills in West Dunbartonshire. That blaze has since been extinguished, but concerns remain that more fires could develop if conditions do not change.
Experts warn that as Scotland continues to experience warmer, drier springs, the frequency of wildfires could increase, putting pressure on emergency services and endangering communities.
