£108,000 Nature Restoration Fund award lets Loch Abar Mòr map rare highland scrub and grow stock that steadies slopes and slows flood water.

A £108,000 Scottish Government grant will map less than 15 hectares of surviving mountain woodland in Lochaber and start a specialist nursery for the stunted “wee trees” that cling to high crags. The award to the Loch Abar Mòr partnership funds the first phase of Wee Trees Lochaber, targeting juniper, dwarf birch and montane willows including the globally endangered whortle-leaved willow.

Those fragments already deliver flood regulation and slope stability. The new money turns them into the seed stock and delivery plan for larger gains.

The cash comes from the Nature Restoration Fund managed by NatureScot and appears in the July 2026 Nature Restoration Fund awards as a Transforming Nature development project led by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture.

Abel McLinden, partnership manager for Loch Abar Mòr, said historic overgrazing left the habitat “one of Scotland’s rarest and most fragmented.” The project will collect seeds and cuttings, assess genetic variation and work with local nurseries so future planting adds diversity rather than clones.

Dr Katherine Leys, NatureScot’s head of biodiversity, called the work the groundwork for an ambitious recovery programme. Without it, she said, “we’re at risk of losing this rare and incredibly important habitat.”

Why Only Crags and Gullies Still Hold Them

Mountain woodland, also called montane scrub or treeline woodland, once formed a continuous band between forest and open hill. Centuries of timber cutting, burning and especially grazing by sheep and red deer pushed the survivors onto ledges animals cannot reach.

The official Sub-Arctic Salix scrub habitat definition notes that the largest continuous stand in the UK is about 0.5 hectares; most are far smaller. National montane willow scrub has been estimated at roughly 10 hectares in total.

Trees reach these heights as wind-blown seed or in bird droppings. Once established they stay knee-high or lower because of wind, cold and short seasons. Their isolation means almost no natural regeneration occurs on the open hill.

The Services That Sit Behind the Shrubs

The second-order value is water and soil. The same low canopies that look insignificant slow runoff, hold moisture in upland soils and bind steep ground against landslides and rockfall.

McLinden listed the functions plainly: the woodlands “stabilised slopes and helped to regulate water flow.” Leys added that they relieve flooding and erosion while supporting a huge range of plants and animals.

How Cuttings Become Future Woods

The project will not simply plant. Teams will map every remaining clump, take material carefully so the source plants survive, then test genetic diversity. The aim is planting stock that matches local conditions and carries enough variation to cope with a warming climate.

Local nurseries will gain the skills and capacity to grow the specialist species. That supply chain is the missing piece for any later landscape-scale work. Corrour Estate already showed unfenced downy willow plantings can hit 98 percent survival when deer numbers are controlled. Fences are expensive and fragment the hill; coordinated stalking across estate boundaries is the cheaper long-term route.

Thirty Years Prove the Comeback Is Possible

Sarah Watts, conservation manager at Corrour, PhD researcher at the University of Stirling and chair of the Montane Woodland Action Group, has documented the turnaround. Her review found almost 400,000 montane willows planted inside 2,659 hectares managed for restoration. The area occupied by these plants has risen a hundredfold since the 1990s, when the largest patch was roughly the size of a tennis court.

Watts has also recorded trees at record altitudes, including birch above 1,000 m on Ben Nevis and rowan at 1,150 m. Those outliers show the climate envelope still exists; grazing pressure, not temperature, keeps the band empty.

Ben Lawers remains the standout: the most biodiverse mountain site in Scotland after decades of work. The lesson for Lochaber is clear. Small, well-planned starts scale when deer numbers fall and partners share stock and knowledge.

From Map to Delivery Plan

The immediate output is a thorough, costed restoration plan based on exact distribution and condition data. That document will set priorities for planting, deer management and further funding bids. Success will be measured first in hectares mapped and plants leaving the nursery, then in new scrub establishing without fences and in measurable slowing of runoff from the high ground.

McLinden put the ambition bluntly: projects need to be large enough to reverse biodiversity loss and strengthen ecosystems. The £108,000 does not buy the whole recovery. It buys the knowledge and the plants that make the next stage possible.
