Dozens of young musicians from Inverclyde had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share the stage with the world-renowned HM Royal Marines Band Scotland. The collaboration took place at Clydeview Academy in Gourock, where students from Inverclyde Schools’ Senior Wind Orchestra performed alongside the esteemed military ensemble.
A Unique Musical Experience
The day began with an intensive workshop led by members of the Royal Marines Band. Talented students from all six Inverclyde high schools participated, learning directly from professional musicians who have performed on some of the world’s biggest stages.
During the session, students honed their skills, received expert guidance, and gained insights into life as a professional musician in the Royal Marines Band. The experience culminated in a live performance that left the audience captivated.
A Prestigious Audience for the Grand Finale
The final performance took place in front of an esteemed audience that included:

Provost Drew McKenzie praised the event: “The Royal Marines Band Scotland play all over the world and are in huge demand, so it was a real honour to welcome them to Inverclyde. Watching them perform alongside our talented young musicians was a joy, and they did themselves, their schools, and our community proud.”
An Opportunity of a Lifetime for Young Musicians
Approximately 30 students from Inverclyde Schools’ Senior Wind Orchestra took part in the masterclass and performance. Cllr Graeme Brooks emphasized the significance of the event: “It was a privilege to witness the Royal Marines Band perform live in our own community. More importantly, it was an incredible opportunity for our young musicians to learn from professionals who have played across the globe.”
He continued, “What an experience for the pupils, Clydeview Academy, and Inverclyde as a whole. Our heartfelt thanks go to the Royal Marines Band for their generosity in sharing their expertise and inspiring the next generation of musicians.”
The Legacy of HM Royal Marines Band Scotland
As one of the five bands that form the musical wing of the Royal Navy, HM Royal Marines Band Scotland plays a vital role in military and diplomatic affairs. Based at HMS Caledonia in Rosyth, the band members are skilled in at least two instruments and undertake a variety of ceremonial duties across Scotland and the North of England.
Their recent engagements include:

- The commissioning of the submarine HMS Astute
