The sound of bagpipes and a red carpet welcome still greet guests boarding Scotland’s most opulent train – but this summer, the Belmond Royal Scotsman has taken Highland luxury to even greater heights.
To mark its 40th anniversary traversing some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, the overnight sleeper has introduced lavish new Grand Suites, cementing its place among the globe’s top-tier train experiences.
A Grand Celebration of the Highlands
Launched in 1985 and famed for its romantic, slow-paced journeys across rugged glens and shimmering lochs, the Royal Scotsman has long been a favourite of the ultra-wealthy seeking a nostalgic, deeply Scottish escape.
The new Magpie and Heron Grand Suites are the latest additions to the train’s fleet of Edwardian-style carriages, bringing a more personalised and immersive design ethos to the fore. Each suite has been imagined by renowned French architect Tristan Auer, combining classic Scottish craftsmanship with luxury finishes.
From hand-carved mahogany marquetry to Pictish and Celtic motifs, the interiors offer more than just comfort – they tell a visual story of Scotland’s heritage.
Highland Textiles and Local Artisans
The newly unveiled Heron Suite leans into a moodier, earth-toned palette. Walls are adorned with mossy jacquards and warm beiges inspired by Fair Isle knitting traditions, developed in collaboration with Edinburgh-based textile house Araminta Campbell.
Bespoke ceramic basins handmade by Galloway potter Joshua Williams and wood-inlay patterns echoing Scotland’s sweeping glens are just a few of the artisan details.
“It’s about evoking the soul of the Highlands while delivering true world-class comfort,” said a Belmond spokesperson.
Each Grand Suite comes with a double bed, a Scottish larch dining table, and private butler service, with the option of in-cabin dining tailored to the guest’s preferences.
Spa in Motion: Wellness with a Dior Touch
Passengers staying in the Grand Suites also enjoy access to the train’s Dior Spa, which debuted last year as the world’s first luxury spa aboard a moving train. The wellness retreat offers complimentary treatments, including facials and massages, while the train winds past castles and ancient forests.
The spa is now a central feature of the Royal Scotsman’s wellness journeys, offering a curated menu of therapies in partnership with Dior Beauty, echoing similar onboard experiences found on Belmond’s Eastern & Oriental Express in Southeast Asia.
Still a Moving Masterpiece
The Royal Scotsman departs from Edinburgh Waverley and winds north across the Forth Railway Bridge, into the Cairngorms and beyond, with itineraries including stops in Dunrobin Castle, Ballindalloch, and Kyle of Lochalsh. Over the years, it has attracted Hollywood celebrities, royalty, and international travellers alike.
Prices for a journey on the Royal Scotsman’s Grand Suites are available on request, with bookings now open for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
