While the core narrative remains unchanged, each adaptation brings a fresh interpretation, and this production is no exception. The student-led cast and crew have worked tirelessly to add their unique spin, making this rendition stand out from the countless versions performed over the years.
Set in 11th-century Scotland, the play follows Macbeth, a Scottish general who, after a victorious battle, encounters three mysterious witches. Junior Theatre Arts major Abby Austin steps into multiple roles, playing Donalbain, the son of King Duncan; Seyton, Macbeth’s loyal servant; and the second witch. Each role demands a distinct approach, but the witches, in particular, will take a new form in this adaptation.
“Everyone interprets the witches differently,” Austin explained. “For this production, we’ve really reimagined them, making them feel fresh and unexpected. It’s been a challenge, but an exciting one.”
The Language Barrier—And Overcoming It
Performing Shakespeare isn’t just about memorizing lines—it’s about mastering a centuries-old language that often feels foreign to modern ears. For Austin, this was one of the biggest hurdles.
“The biggest challenge is definitely the language. A lot of words are spelled differently or mean something entirely different than what we know today,” she said. “Diction and rhythm are everything. Shakespeare’s plays transport you into another world, and that’s what makes it so magical.”
Despite its age, the production aims to make the show accessible to all audiences, whether they are longtime Shakespeare lovers or newcomers. The cast and directors have introduced subtle modern twists, ensuring that the story remains engaging while maintaining its classic essence.
