A New International Learning Opportunity
Clemson University’s MBA program has unveiled an exciting new study abroad opportunity in Scotland. The inaugural trip to Stirling, scheduled for June 23 to July 4, 2025, will offer students hands-on international business experience. Professors Craig Wallace and Matt Hersel will co-teach the course, reinforcing Clemson’s commitment to expanding global learning experiences.
Building on a Decade of Global Learning
For ten years, Clemson has provided MBA students with a transformative study abroad experience in Oxford, emphasizing international business strategy and leadership. Jane Layton, MBA academic program director, highlights the program’s impact: “The feedback from employers and students underscores the importance of international business perspectives. We are thrilled to expand this opportunity to Scotland.”
What Students Can Expect
This study abroad program isn’t just about classroom learning. The three-credit course, MBA 8990 Leadership Development, blends coursework with real-world business exposure. Students will engage with Scottish business leaders and explore the country’s industries through site visits. The curriculum includes:
- Pre-trip coursework to prepare for site visits and activities.
- Visits to businesses in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Killin.
- Development of a personal leadership growth plan.
- Team-based consulting projects for Scottish companies, culminating in a case study presentation.
- Reflection assignments to capture key takeaways from the experience.
Students will also have a weekend free for personal travel, allowing them to explore Scotland’s landscapes and culture.
A Unique Perspective on Leadership
Craig Wallace describes the program as a chance to analyze leadership from a modern perspective while immersed in Scotland’s rich history. “This journey will allow students to explore leadership across industries – from golf and whisky to global consulting,” he says. The hands-on approach ensures students gain practical insights that translate directly into their careers.
Expanding Global Business Education
Greg Pickett, Ph.D., Director of the Clemson MBA Program, emphasizes that international study programs like this enhance students’ marketability. “Our goal is to prepare students for business leadership worldwide. This Scotland experience takes our coursework to the next level.”
