Vivo S2 Teaser Leak Reveals Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Specs and Price Chaos

A teaser image leaked this week shows vivo reviving a phone name that has sat untouched in India since 2019, and the spec sheet attached to it barely resembles anything the S badge used to mean. The rumored chip is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The rumored battery clears 7,000 mAh. The rumored camera stack includes a 50MP periscope lens. None of that sounds like the mid-ranger the name last carried.

Three separate leaks in the past ten weeks cannot even agree on the phone’s price bracket. That disagreement traces back to a chip strategy Qualcomm built specifically to blur the line between flagship and mid-range, and vivo’s confused naming ladder in India is where the blur is showing up first.

A Dormant Nameplate Returns With Flagship Numbers

The teaser, reported by GSMArena, points to a device running a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset with a 6.59-inch OLED display carrying “1.5K” resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The rumored camera array pairs a 50MP main sensor with a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, an 8MP ultrawide and a 32MP selfie camera, sitting above an in-display fingerprint scanner. Battery capacity is tipped above 7,000 mAh, with 80W wired charging plus wireless and reverse wireless charging on top.

The last phone to wear the S badge in India arrived under very different terms. GSMArena’s original coverage of that launch noted the vivo S1 reached India as a rebadge, arriving weeks after its Chinese debut as the Y7s, and it packed a MediaTek Helio P65 chip, a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 4,500 mAh battery, priced from INR 17,990 (about 253 dollars at the time) for the base model. Two more variants topped out at INR 19,990.

Lined up side by side, the gap between the two phones is the whole story.

Qualcomm Built This Chip to Break the Flagship Price Ceiling

The chip rumored for the S2 did not appear by accident. Qualcomm previewed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui in September 2025, then gave it a full launch on November 26, 2025, through its Chinese operations. It shares the same 3-nanometer process and Oryon CPU cores as the range-topping Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, though the prime cores run at a lower 3.8GHz clock and the chip uses a 2 plus 6 core layout with an Adreno 840 GPU.

Qualcomm has framed the chip as a way to spread flagship-level performance into phones that do not carry flagship price tags.

Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm’s general manager for mobile, compute and XR, made that comment when the chip was first previewed at the Snapdragon Summit. Qualcomm has since pointed to the OnePlus Ace 6T, sold in India as the OnePlus 15R, as the first phone built around the chip, with iQOO, Realme, vivo and Motorola named as expected early adopters.

The company’s own numbers back up the pitch: up to 36 percent faster CPU performance and a 46 percent jump in AI processing compared with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the chip it effectively replaces in the sub-flagship tier.

The Paper Trail Behind Vivo’s Teaser Campaign

Long before this week’s image leaked, the S2 left a trail across certification databases and tipster feeds that maps how the phone crept toward launch.

1. May 2026: Tipster Abhishek Yadav first flags that vivo is restarting the S series in India, with early guesses pointing to a mid-range chipset.
2. Early July 2026: The model number V2576 surfaces on the BIS and GSMA certification databases, an early signal that an Indian launch is being prepared.
3. Mid-July 2026: A Bluetooth SIG listing for V2576 reveals an 8GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration, around the same time industry sources put the price between Rs 45,000 and Rs 50,000.
4. July 21, 2026: Leaker Yogesh Brar ties the V2576 model number to an early August unveiling, with sales expected to open around August 15, and describes the phone as aimed at the premium mid-range segment against the Oppo Reno 16 Pro.
5. This week: The teaser image itself leaks alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 spec sheet that GSMArena first reported.

Each step on its own reads as routine pre-launch housekeeping. Stacked together, they show a phone that has been certified, priced and re-priced multiple times before vivo has said a word about it publicly.

So Is the Vivo S2 a Flagship or Not?

Depends which leak from the past ten weeks gets believed. One report puts the S2 in a Rs 20,000 mid-range bracket. Another puts it near Rs 50,000. A third skips a number entirely and just names a rival. All three cannot be right, and none of them has vivo’s confirmation behind it.

The three accounts disagree on both chipset and price, which is unusual for a phone this deep into its certification cycle.

• Techwebel (May 2026): citing tipster Abhishek Yadav, expected a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 or 4 Gen 5 chipset and a price between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000, in line with the original S1’s positioning.
• My Mobile India (early-to-mid July 2026): citing unnamed industry sources, put the price between Rs 45,000 and Rs 50,000, describing a sub-flagship phone sitting just below vivo’s V-series.
• Gizmochina (July 21, 2026): citing leaker Yogesh Brar, described a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset aimed at the premium mid-range segment, positioned against the Oppo Reno 16 Pro.

The newest reporting and GSMArena’s teaser coverage now agree on the chipset. What they still will not settle is the price, and a phone cannot be a flagship killer and a budget phone at the same time.

Vivo’s Own Naming Ladder Is Starting to Wobble

Vivo runs one of the more crowded naming systems in the smartphone business, and the S2’s return exposes how crowded it has gotten.

• Y series – vivo’s budget volume line for the Indian market.
• T series – value-focused mid-range; the T5 Lite recently launched with a Dimensity 6300 chip and a 6,500 mAh battery.
• V series – vivo’s premium mid-range workhorse in India, and the tier the returning S2 is reportedly meant to sit just beneath.
• S series – dormant in India since 2019, now rumored to return as a camera-heavy sub-flagship.
• X series – vivo’s true flagship line, currently juggling an X300 E variant rumored with a 7,200 mAh battery and a Zeiss telephoto lens, plus an X500 Ultra still choosing between three separate 200MP sensors for its own telephoto camera.

The S name means something different again in China, where it has stayed active the whole time. There, it is a camera-centric lineup positioned below the flagship X series, with the S30 launching in May 2025 and a follow-up generation skipping the number 40 outright because four carries unlucky connotations in Chinese. That next phone, tipped as the S50 Pro Mini, is itself rumored to run the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset alongside a periscope telephoto camera, meaning the chip is showing up under the S name on both sides of the border, attached to two phones with no shared lineage.

Readers who spotted the original leak online were quick to flag the mismatch, pointing out that vivo’s Chinese-market S-series phones usually resurface in India wearing V badges instead, which made a standalone S2 look like it belonged to a different naming logic altogether.

Early August Now Looks Like the Target

Vivo has not confirmed a launch date, and GSMArena’s own reporting on the teaser only guessed the reveal is a few weeks out. The certification trail points to a tighter window than that. BIS and GSMA listings typically land close to an Indian debut, and Yogesh Brar’s tip has the S2 arriving in early August with retail sales opening around August 15.

Whichever price survives to launch day, the S2 will be the first phone in seven years to test whether the S name still means anything to Indian buyers.
