Stuart Hogg Arrested Again for Breaching Court Order

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg faces fresh legal trouble just months after his domestic abuse conviction.

The 32-year-old was arrested on Wednesday in his home town of Hawick over allegations he broke a strict five-year non-harassment order protecting his ex-wife Gillian.

Police later released him without charge, but the incident has once again thrust the fallen star back into the headlines.

What Happened This Week

Police Scotland confirmed officers arrested a 33-year-old man in the Hawick area on Thursday 12 February 2025 following a report that he breached the court order.

Sources close to the case told the Scottish Sun that Hogg had been using a co-parenting app to message Gillian about personal matters instead of sticking strictly to arrangements for their four children.

Hogg was reportedly stopped by police at Manchester Airport last month while returning from France, where he now plays for Montpellier, and ordered to report to Hawick police station this week.

He attended voluntarily, was interviewed, and released pending further enquiries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 33-year-old man was arrested in the Hawick area on Thursday 12 February 2025 in connection with a report of a breach of a non-harassment order. He was released without charge.”

The 2024 Conviction That Shocked Scottish Rugby

In September 2024, Hogg stood in the dock at Selkirk Sheriff Court and admitted a single charge of domestic abuse against Gillian over a five-year period.

The court heard he:

• Regularly shouted and swore at her
• Tracked her movements using an app
• Sent hundreds of distressing messages, sometimes up to 200 in a single day
• Showed up uninvited at her home while drunk

Sheriff Peter Paterson described Hogg’s behaviour as “controlling and abusive”.

The former full-back was sentenced to a one-year community payback order, fined £600 for breaching bail by contacting Gillian, and handed the five-year non-harassment order that banned all contact except discussions about their children.

Stripped of MBE and Dundee Honorary Degree

The fallout was swift and brutal.

Just weeks ago it was confirmed Hogg had been stripped of his MBE, awarded in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours for services to rugby union.

The Cabinet Office quietly removed his name from the official list following his conviction.

The University of Dundee also revoked the honorary doctorate it awarded him in 2022, stating his actions were “incompatible with the values of the university”.

One of Scotland’s most celebrated players, capped 100 times and the nation’s joint-second highest try scorer with 27, now sees his legacy in tatters.

Life in France and Attempts at a Fresh Start

Hogg dramatically retired from rugby in July 2023, citing the toll on his body and family life.

Less than four months later he reversed the decision and signed for French second-division side Montpellier in December 2023.

He has kept a deliberately low profile in France, rarely speaking to British media.

Friends say he is devastated by the latest arrest and insists he only wants to co-parent peacefully.

But those close to Gillian say she simply wants the court orders respected so she and the children can move on without fear.
