Axel Piper The Delhi High Court has scheduled to hear Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram’s plea on April 16, 2025, regarding the fresh corruption case filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case involves allegations of Chidambaram accepting illegal gratification from the alcoholic beverage company, Diageo Scotland.
CBI Accuses Chidambaram of Receiving Bribe in 2005
The CBI has accused Karti Chidambaram of taking a bribe in exchange for lifting a liquor import ban imposed in 2005. This alleged exchange occurred during the tenure of his father, P Chidambaram, as Union Finance Minister. The bribery charges focus on Chidambaram’s involvement in facilitating the lifting of the ban, which allegedly benefited Diageo Scotland.
Legal Proceedings and Adjournment Request
In the latest development, the single-judge Bench of Justice Vikas Mahajan adjourned the case after Karti Chidambaram’s lawyer requested a delay. The request was based on the unavailability of the counsel assigned to argue the matter. As a result, the hearing will take place on April 16, allowing Chidambaram’s legal team time to prepare.
Charges Against Karti Chidambaram
The CBI has booked Karti Chidambaram on charges under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act. This new case adds to Chidambaram’s ongoing legal troubles. He is already an accused in multiple high-profile cases, including the Aircel-Maxis case, the INX Media case, and the Chinese Visa case.
