Star of Caledonia Landmark Moves Forward with New Plans

A long-awaited landmark at the Scotland-England border is a step closer to reality. The Star of Caledonia, a 33-meter-high steel structure featuring LED lights, has seen fresh plans submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council. The project, first conceived over two decades ago, aims to serve as a symbolic gateway between the two nations and an economic boost for the region.

Revised Design and Funding Backing

After years of delays, the Star of Caledonia Trust has secured financial backing from wind energy company CWP Energy. The project, now estimated to cost around £10 million, has undergone modifications, including a reduction in height from the original 40 meters to 33 meters. Despite these changes, it remains an ambitious undertaking, drawing comparisons to the Angel of the North in Gateshead.

Lucy Houston, chair of the Star of Caledonia Trust, expressed optimism about the progress. “I am delighted that the Star of Caledonia has reached a milestone on its very long journey, and I am relieved to see it move to planning in memory of my late husband, Alasdair Houston.”

The structure, designed by acclaimed architect Cecil Balmond OBE, will be accompanied by a visitor center, intended to enhance the experience for an estimated 250,000 annual visitors.

Decades in the Making

The Star of Caledonia project has a long and complex history. Initially proposed in the early 2000s following the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, it was conceived as a cultural and economic driver for the region. Balmond’s design won a competition in 2011, securing planning permission soon after. However, financial constraints prevented construction from starting.

Now, with CWP Energy’s backing, efforts are underway to secure the remaining funding needed to complete the public-private partnership.

A Symbol for Tourism and Economic Growth

The project aims to serve multiple purposes beyond being an eye-catching landmark. Advocates believe it will significantly contribute to tourism, local economies, and regional pride. “We are excited to see the Star of Caledonia get a new home. This project is not just about a landmark sculpture but about being a catalyst for tourism, local economies, and community pride,” Houston stated.

Rod Wood, managing director of CWP Energy, echoed similar sentiments. “We are already heavily invested in Dumfries and Galloway through our wind farms, but this project will stand for generations and provide an economic boost.”

  • The Star of Caledonia is expected to attract around 250,000 visitors per year.
  • The structure will feature LED lighting to ensure high visibility to travelers on the A74(M) motorway.
  • The project is targeting a spring 2027 completion date, 25 years after its original conception.

Next Steps and Approval Process

Dumfries and Galloway Council will now review the revised plans before granting final approval. Should everything proceed smoothly, construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, lasting 12 to 15 months.

Local support appears to be strong, with community members welcoming the potential tourism and economic benefits. “Residents have been incredibly supportive,” Houston noted. “We believe the Star of Caledonia will bring a sense of identity and pride to the area.”

While the project has faced setbacks over the years, the latest developments suggest the Star of Caledonia may finally rise over the Scottish border, serving as both a striking piece of public art and an economic driver for the region.
